or someone's opinion. Obviously, there’s a lot of amazingly complex bio-chemistry

going on in Ganoderma Lucidum and that’s precisely why it is so valued for its health-promoting potential.

abuse Ganoderma Lucidum with harsh extraction processes,

some benefits remain intact. We have

Definitions, Explanations& ClarificationsYou may be wondering what some of the words used above really mean. So first, let’s start with some definitions that will help clarify everything.

Fruiting Body – this is any mushroom you see growing out of the ground, a dead tree or a bag of sterilized sawdust. This is the reproductive part of the organism – much like the flower of a plant. And just like flowers only bloom during a certain season, the mushroom fruiting body will only form in response to some stress (extreme heat/cold, excess moisture, or loss of nutrition in the environment) that forces the organism into a “reproduce or die” mode. In other words, the fruiting body is NOT the growth form of the mushroom organism. It is strictly the reproductive part of the fungus produced at the end of its life cycle once most of the beneficial compounds are depleted.

Mycelium – this is the growth form of the organism where all of the life processes occur – including formation of antibiotic, antifungal and antiviral compounds. Quality mycelium should be cultivated in an organic substrate (nutrient broth) that provides everything required for the mycelium to flourish –nutrition, moisture, etc. Most mushroom-derived compounds used in pharmaceuticals are NOT actually

collected from the mycelium itself, but from the nutrient broth or substrate where mycelium grows.

Spore – the equivalent of a seed, the spore is produced by the fruiting body as the final part of the reproductive process. While the spore contains the genetic material capable of producing the mycelium

and the subsequent fruiting body, it does not contain all of the benefits of either the

mycelium or the fruiting body any more than a seed from a lemon provides all the benefits of a lemon or even a lemon tree. Furthermore the spore develops a nearly impenetrable shell to protect the genetic material and the lubricating oily essence. To access the genetic material or the oily essence (promoted by some companies), the spore must be cracked and processed and any benefits are completely minimized.

Extract – a word that covers a lot of possibilities. Derived from either the fruiting body or the mycelium using some type of solvent, extractions supposedly concentrate some desirable compound(s) while destroying, eliminating or reducing other portions of the fungus. The two most common solvents used for extraction are alcohol and boiling water. The widely held belief that extracts are somehow “more potent” than other forms of mushroom material is simply false. Such narrow thinking is the result of historical usage and misleading Internet marketing claims. Science provides definitive evidence that only Fully Potentiated Ganoderma Lucidum provides all of the wholesome goodness people need and deserve.

Fully Potentiated Ganoderma Lucidum – the complete fungal material consisting of all the biologically active components produced throughout the entire life cycle of the organism – 365 days a year. These compounds are responsible for the antibiotic, antiviral and antifungal properties (and all the other ‘survival’ compounds) that the fungus produces to give itself an advantage over highly competitive bacteria and microbes. These secondary metabolites have opened up the frontiers of medicine, with such breakthroughs as antibiotics from penicillin mold and cholesterol lowering drugs from other fungi. It is precisely these extraordinary properties that are removed through most extraction processes. The Process In DetailMushrooms belong to the Kingdom of Fungi. Science has long known that all fungi produce potent bioactive compounds. A classic example of medicines derived from fungi is antibiotics – some 99% started as fungi. Nearly all of the research done since the discovery of Penicillin, the first fungal antibiotic, in 1928 has shown that the primary bio-active compounds are the extra-cellular ones. These are the compounds that are released out of the cells and into the immediate environment or substrate that is nurturing the growing mycelium. These same compounds in turn digest the fungal foods and transport the nutrients back across the cell wall where they are used by the fungi to protect themselves from bacteria and other microbes. Over the life span of a fungus, fully 95% of all the bioactive compounds produced are excreted out of its cells and into their surrounding substrate in which the fungus was grown.

In contrast, the mushroom fruiting body is the spent or used up fungal tissue that appears at the very tail end of the mushroom’s life span and typically has the lowest concentration of bioactive compounds present. The mycelium is the growing portion of the fungi and contains a much higher proportion of the extra-cellular bioactive metabolites, but far fewer than those found in the substrate.

To realize the full potential of Ganoderma Lucidum, it is important to capture all of the different classes of compounds produced during the entire life cycle. This includes the cell wall material (polysaccharides), which are the same in the fruiting body and the mycelium, but also all the extra-cellular compounds with their wide ranging health benefits.

Even ten years ago, modern cultivation methods capable of producing fully potentiated Ganoderma Lucidum had not yet been perfected. Following the tradition of over five millennia, most companies would grow or buy the fruiting body, make it into a tea, then let it air dry (spray drying was perhaps the only modern innovation added more recently to the process). This

became what is known as a “hot water extract”. Many falsely claim that the hot water extraction process still provides the best, most bioactive form of Ganoderma Lucidum. Reason alone tells us this is nonsense

and science provides the validation. We all

know that extreme heat destroys

many bioactive compounds. Furthermore, the concept that extracts are better than anything else is yesterday’s

science and does not reflect today’s state-of-the-art

knowledge. These “hot water extracts” are certainly better than

trying to digest Ganoderma Lucidum’s hard wood-like fruiting body, but the extraction process entirely misses the potential health benefits of the extra-cellular compounds.

Some companies simply cultivate the mycelium. This can be a better choice than using hot water extracts from the fruiting body if and only if the mycelium is grown in solid substrate. Furthermore, mycelium

products can be problematic and are not generally produced according to strict GMP

standards. In fact, most mycelium products contain up to 70% of

unconverted substrate – so only 30% of what the consumer buys genetically qualifies to be called Ganoderma Lucidum.
