President’s Message Fall has arrived with cooler temps, shorter days and some beautiful roses. Our garden has seen some wonderful blooms this fall and I hope to have a few to bring to our October meeting. It‟s our annual in-house rose show and I hope every member will make an effort to bring in a few blooms from your garden to show. Showing your blooms is a fun and exciting way to share your garden with others. It is also an opportunity to talk about the various types of roses in your garden and maybe even share some growing tips with someone new. We have a new President at the American Rose Society. Jolene Adams was sworn in during the ARS Fall National Convention in September. Jolene has dedicated much of her life to roses and I know we all wish her and the new administration well for the coming term of office. Jolene Adams sworn in by Dr. Tommy Cairns Congratulations to Lavonne Glover who won top awards at the Tenarky District Show held in Nashville. Her floribunda spray of „Europeana” won Duchess of Show. Her American Box of 9 blooms of „St.Patrick‟ won best of show and her arrangement won ARS Silver Medal and Royalty Award. Tina & I attended this show and so glad to see Birmingham blooms on the show tables. We were amazed at the awesome blooms and arrangements we saw there. President’s Message Fall has arrived with cooler temps, shorter

days and some beautiful roses. Our garden has

seen some wonderful blooms this fall and I

hope to have a few to bring to our October

meeting. It‟s our annual in-house rose show

and I hope every member will make an effort

to bring in a few blooms from your garden to

show. Showing your blooms is a fun and

exciting way to share your garden with others.

It is also an opportunity to talk about the

various types of roses in your garden and

maybe even share some growing tips with

someone new.

We have a new President at the American

Rose Society. Jolene Adams was sworn in

during the ARS Fall National Convention in

September. Jolene has dedicated much of her

life to roses and I know we all wish her and

the new administration well for the coming

term of office.

Jolene Adams sworn in by Dr. Tommy Cairns

Congratulations to Lavonne Glover who won

top awards at the Tenarky District Show held

in Nashville. Her floribunda spray of

„Europeana” won Duchess of Show. Her

American Box of 9 blooms of „St.Patrick‟ won

best of show and her arrangement won ARS

Silver Medal and Royalty Award. Tina & I

attended this show and so glad to see

Birmingham blooms on the show tables. We

were amazed at the awesome blooms and

arrangements we saw there. I want to

encourage all members to attend our district

and national shows whenever possible.

Don‟t you just love your rose garden in the

fall? The colors are so vivid and the blooms

are often larger than the spring blooms. After

our long hot summer the roses are rewarding

us for the time we took to water and spray

them. The pruning we did in August helped

produce these fine fall blooms. Of course, we

still need to water making sure the roses get

1”of water a week. If you have blackspot or

mildew you do need to continue your spray

program.

Years ago the Alabama State Fair was in

October and Bob and I would cut our roses

and go with the Hunts and Nora and Dick

Coffee to enter our blooms in the Fair. It was

fun and we all won. This fall our roses have

been especially beautiful. Bob will continue

to spray until frost. He often cuts roses and

brings them in to me. I enjoy arranging them

and giving them away. A few of my favorites

that last in arrangements are Classic Touch,

Pop Warner, Gemini, Cajun Moon and

Veterans Honor. In the miniature roses I like

Memphis King, Giggles, Springs a Coming,

Soroptimist International and Ty. If you plan

to buy more roses for your garden then it is

time to begin looking in the new catalogs and

making your list. You need to check your pH

and make any needed adjustments to your soil

before adding extra mulch for the winter.

Important things to do in November:

1. Plan a safe, dry place to store your spray

material –out of the reach of children.

2. Sharpen your tools, and lubricate them.

3. Clean out sprayer and wash it with warm

soapy water.

4. Rose photography can be a new

challenge you might find interesting.

5. Make arrangements for your home.

6. A wise man said “With roses you can

do as little or as much as you want. The

outcome will be reflected in your roses”

While your roses are resting, you can be

planning for the spring!

Recording Secretary.

Peggy and Bobby Babb brought roses from

their garden to show. He brought several

varieties and spoke about each one and also

passed each one around the room so that the

Summer of Love, Melody Parfumee, Dream

Come True, Gemini, Tropicana, Don Juan (this

is the rose that started it all in their garden),

powdery mildew and thrips have been

especially bad for him this year in his garden.

The door prizes were roses and the winners

Phillips – Tiddly Winks – Miniature; Hyacinth
