Each February, the Felicians of North America honor the passing of Fr. Joseph Dąbrowski, the great Polish priest and servant of northern Wisconsin, who passed away in 1903. Why do we honor the memory of this man yet today? In addition to being hailed as “the foremost Polish

priest in America” by some biographers, it was Fr. Joseph himself who wrote the initial letter calling for the Felician Sisters to come to America in 1874. Like those Sisters who eventually joined him in service, Fr. Joseph himself answered the call to “serve

where needed,” and as a result, an incredible amount of good work was offered to God and his people in the United States. The late Bishop John Foley of Detroit, in a letter dated February 21, 1903, eloquently summarized the life of Fr. Dabrowski: “The tireless work, endless dedication, unwavering practice of all the virtues of a Christian and a priest made it richer for all… Indeed, he faithfully fulfilled his duty to the Good Shepherd.” May we strive to imitate such virtues in our own compassionate service of one another at Felician Village!

World Day of SickFebruary 11

Feb. 11 is World Day of the Sick, an observation introduced by Pope John Paul II as a way for believers to offer prayers for those suffering from illnesses as well as those who provide care to them.‘LOVE’ for Quality

L = Listen. Longevity.O = Ownership. Observation. V = Validate. Value.E = Everyone. Expectation. Doesn’t everyone L-O-V-E quality? Before you answer that, please read on. Quality can be thought of as the comparison of an expectation to actual. You ‘love’ a restaurant because your meals are always cooked perfectly and consistently taste so good. You

‘love’ your go-to pair of shoes as they never hurt your feet no matter how many miles you walked that day. Maybe you just love your car because it’s dependable and it makes you feel safe and secure. Well you enjoy these things so much because they exceed your expectation. They never fail you and you have come to rely on these things. After nearly 130 years, residents

and families rely on Felician Village as we continue to exceed expectations. This doesn’t happen by chance. Great dedication has been given to providing a high level of quality care and quality of life to those who they serve over many years. As employees, doesn’t it make you proud to work at a place that provides a consistent high-level of care, is considered the ‘go-to’ place for senior care in our community and provides a safe and secure environment for the residents we serve? Now, don’t you just love quality?

Hello! My name is Petie Groll and I am the Health Information Coordinator for the Felician Village Campus. Health Informa-tion Management takes care of acquiring, analyz-ing and protecting digital and traditional medical in-formation vital to provid-ing quality resident care. With the widespreadcomputerization of health records, Felician Village has converted from paper charts to the electronic format in Next Step and St. Mary’s over the past eight months. We are hoping to get the Villa and Court converted soon. This advanced technology is bringing better efficiency to the information management and is in direct sup-port of an information-intensive and informa-tion-reliant healthcare system. In addition, my other responsibilities include: ICD-10 coding for all resident diagnoses Entering diagnoses into the health record and making changes, additions and updates

Updating, filing and storing all records in the respective departments Compiling and submitting many of the audits for the Quality Management depart-ment Assisting the MDS Coordi-nator in sending out Plan of Care information to residents and their families Working with the admis-

sions team and business office to help ensure a smooth admis-

sion process Receiving requests and sending medical records to families, lawyers, other healthcare facilities and insurance companies Maintaining and developing the policies and procedures for my departmentAs you can see, this department is involved in many of the operating aspects of Felician Village. I love my job and welcome anyone who would like to visit my office in the lower level of the Village Square.

It's a STRIKE!

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome affects 1 in 20 Americans. The carpal tunnel is located at the base of the palm formed by wrist bones and a ligament for which the median nerve and tendons of the hand pass through. Compression of this area, or inflammation, causes the symptoms of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome. While chronic repetitive motion is the most common cause of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome. Other causes include: diabe-tes, degenerative or rheumatoid arthritis, swelling of the tendons of the wrist, wrist injuries and hormonal changes.People typically report symptoms of

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome as numbness or tingling in the fingers rather than pain in the fingers or wrist. Many people com-plain of being awakened by a burning sensation in their hand. Other symptoms include a weak hand grip or difficulty picking up small objects. These symptoms are a result of compression of the median nerve. If Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is addressed early, before becoming too severe, surgery can often be prevented with assessment and treatment from an Occupational Therapist or Physical Therapist. You can expect the therapist to assess your symp-

toms to rule out other diagnosis which may mimic Carpal Tunnel Syndrome. Treatment may include splinting, mo-dalities, tendon glides and exercises to improve your symptoms.

President’s ColumnSeveral important planning events have taken place, or are in process, on the Felician Village campus. On January 24, the Board of Directors and the Strategic Team completed the strategic planning retreat for 2017-18. This retreat was facilitated by our Director of Quality Management, Brenda Georgenson. Planning at a strategic level is important because it ensures that we continue to fulfill our mission, consider community needs, operate in a financially responsible manner, and look to the viability of our entire organization. As our strategic plan develops, the administrative team is also working on the 2018 budget to ensure strategic initiatives and department operating budgets are adequately funded. In addition, we have embarked on a master campus planning process to ensure that Felician Village is positioned to meet market demands over the next 15-20 years. We also consider issues staff is having with current building design and its fixed equipment. This several month long process started in November, 2016, and includes listening sessions with various stakeholder groups, including Gardens residents. Comments from these groups along with market study results and a review of current buildings and infrastructure are now being analyzed. The results of this process will be added to our overall strategic plan. We need to be an attractive senior living campus for the Baby Boomers who have a much different perspective on what would attract them to live here. We also want Felician Village to be a great place to work and to improve the physical work environment where needed.Helping those who live on our campus is not our only goal. We are also reaching out to the community with a variety of educational programs related to dementia. For specific details on the monthly class offerings, go to our website at felicianvillage.org. Thank you again for choosing to live at Felician Village. It is our daily honor to serve you and your families with the highest quality facility and care in Manitowoc County.

Peace and All Good,

Frank SoltysPresident/CEO
