meeting presenting “Anatomy of a Junk Sci-

ence Litigation Case”

With Honeywell since 1978, Pete has taught Tur-

bine Engine Accident Investigation for 10 years at

both FAA and NTSB accident investigation schools.

He has participated in over 75 on-scene accident

investigations, with participation in about 200 total

accident investigations.

He has been designated as a testifying expert in 3

product liability lawsuits (applicable to the presen-

tation).

He has also given about 25 depositions (applicable

to the presentation).

Highlights of April Meeting

President Ed Taschner welcomed members and guests to the meeting on Octover 7. Ralph Koepke led the Pledge of Allegiance.

Our featured speaker was Matt Thraen, President of both ITEC and LHTEC.

ITEC was started in 1982 as a joint venture with AIDC to design and develop the TFE1042 (now F125), our 1

st and only after-

burning engine. At its peak over 300 Tai-wan personnel were assigned to the program.

The Indigenous Defense Fighter (IDF), with a current fleet of 125 a/c, entered into ser-vice in 1991.

The dry (non-afterburning) version of the F125, designated F124, has been sold to AeroVodochody providing propulsion for 72 L159 jet trainer a/c. It also now powers the Aermacci M346 advanced trainer aircraft and system currently in use in 4 countries. This system has the sales potential for over 500 a/c over the next 10 years, as the current average age of trainers in service is over 17 years.

A new competition in the US, T-X, to re-place the T38, calling for 350 a/c has an RFP date of Q3 2016. Competitors could include Boeing/Saab, BAE, Northrop Grumman and Lockheed. Aermacci is seek-ing a US prime to compete for this program.

In India, a contract award is expected in 2017 to replace the engines in the Jaguar with 2 F125s. Benefits include +30% thrust and -400 lb. weight. In addition, Honeywell would provide significant a/c systems com-ponents – avionics, GCU, power distribution and others.

LHTEC was started in 1984 as an equal partnership of Garrett and Allison (now Honeywell and Rolls Royce). When the original RAH-66 program was cancelled, LHTEC acquired all rights to the engine. The original T800 was simultaneously quali-fied for the Army and certified for the FAA

designation CTS800, using many of the same tests and test data. This was an aviation first.

The CTS800 family spans the power range from 1360 – 1715 shp, and is in use: 2004 – Westland SuperLynx 300 2008 – ShinMaywa US-2 (driving bounda-

ry layer compressor) 2009 – Sikorsky X2 technology demon-

strator (airspeed > 250kts.) 2012 - AgustaWestland AW159 Wildcat

in use by 6 operators 2014 - T129 Turkish Attack Helicopter 2020 – Turkey LUX (light utility helicop-

ter)

In summary, while these programs seem small in comparison to commercial propul-sion or APU programs, both of engine sys-tems have outstanding performance and service records, and will provide revenues and profits for Honeywell for many decades to come. ---------------------------------------------------- Your Board of Directors has voted to donate $100 each month to the Scholarship Fund, and the other $100 to local charities as usual. This month’s charitable donation went to the Hospice of the Valley. 50/50 winner was Bill Waggoner (x2). Club guidelines dictate that we support local charities exclusively.

I want to thank those who have responded to our calls for giving to our Scholarship

Foundation and to encourage everyone to help, even if it’s just a little bit. Because of

you, we’ve experienced a dramatic increase in our scholarship account which will, in

turn, result in significant changes to the awards we make next year. THANK YOU!!!

Keep those contributions coming!

As a club, we will continue our focus on charitable giving by refocusing on the Fix-It

Guys program. The goal will be to tie our efforts with the Rebuilding Together Valley

of the Sun (RTVOS) organization. RTVOS engages community partners and volunteers

in the revitalization of neighborhoods. Through home repair, modifications and im-

provements, they provide needy low-income senior, veteran and disabled individuals

with a safer, more independent and comfortable life.

Honeywell Aerospace is one of the corporate sponsors for RTVOS. They have asked the

Arizona retirees community to get on board and help with this worthwhile endeavor.

We intend to respond positively by calling for volunteers to work side-by-side with ac-

tive Honeywell employees when called upon to do so.

We have already started the process of working with RTVOS by inviting their Executive

Director, Dennis Flynn, to speak to us at the Jan 2016 meeting. Dennis is the founder

of RTVOS, and has been executive director for nearly 25 years. He has a wealth of

management experience and is very involved in the community. His passion comes

from his strong family values and unwavering work ethic.

Pete Baker will return this month by popular request to talk about his personal experi-

ences in the Product Integrity environment. He will be talking about actual aircraft

crash investigations he participated in. I think you will find this presentation quite in-

teresting.

In Memoriam Process

Over time, many members have contacted the Editor to request information about a deceased member, provide obituary information about a member or friend or to ask why a particular name has not been listed. The Club wishes to explain how our process works.

The monthly “In Memoriam” is compiled by our past president, Al Stimac. Monthly, Al re-ceives a list from Honeywell of all deceased former employees, coded by employment loca-tion. He includes Bendix because there is no way of knowing whether they transferred to Garrett or retired out here from Bendix so why not include them to be sure. He does not list HON people because they would have been hired in way past “Garrett” folks and my experi-ence has been that none of them have been familiar to me as having worked for “Garrett”.

Also included are obits/emails that are found by various members after first checking to make sure that we had not previously reported it.

In addition, occasionally included are non-Arizona people that may have had con-tacts/influence in Phoenix. A good example is Tony Garcia (Field Service in Singapore & France) or Tom Wich (Seattle Sales) listed earlier in the year. Others would be corporate leaders that Phoenix people would want to know about.

I am trying to make friends outside of Facebook while applying the same principles. Therefore, every day I walk down the street and tell passersby what I have eaten, how I feel at the moment, what I have done the night before, what I will do later, and with whom.

I give them pictures of my family, my dog, and of me gardening, taking things apart in the garage, watering the lawn, standing in front of

For those of my generation who do not, and cannot comprehend why Facebook exists:

landmarks, driving around town, having lunch, and doing what anybody and eve-rybody does every day.

I also listen to their conversations, give them the "thumbs up" and tell them I like them.

And it works just like Facebook. I al-ready have four people following me:

HRSC & GRC Scholarship Program

The Scholarship Foundation Board would like to let everyone know that the HRSC Board has re-

viewed and approved the Scholarship Foundation Bylaws. We are working to create a Scholarship

Foundation web page, on the HRSC web site, where our members will find our Bylaws, Operating

Procedures, the Operating Schedule for this year’s program, a new application form, contact infor-

mation for all of the Scholarship Foundation Board Members, and instructions on how to donate to

the Scholarship Fund-- for those that would like to contribute.

As you know from last month, the Scholarship Foundation has been granted IRS recognition as a

501(c)3 charitable organization. With this new status, contributors to this valuable program can now

deduct contributions from their reported income. Each donor will receive a receipt for your dona-

tion, from our Treasurer, Gwen Scheetz.

The Scholarship Foundation Board started the donation ball rolling with personal donations and Frank

Holman, our University of Arizona liaison, has made the following offer: “There are few opportunities

that are more worthy than increasing our scholarship support for our eligible students at Arizona’s

major universities. As a Director of both the Garrett Retirees’ Club and the Honeywell Clubs Scholar-

ship Foundation Board, I have decided to support this program with my own $100 dollar donation. I

have also modified my estate planning documents to bequeath $10,000 to the Scholarship fund. Will

those of you, who are financially secure, please join me in meeting our objectives of ultimately

providing additional scholarship funding to help defer the rising cost of higher education? Your sup-

port can be made in a variety of ways. You can provide a one-time donation anytime of the year;

you can make smaller monthly donations; you can add a donation to your annual dues, or; you

might consider making a donation at the time of year you take your minimum distribution from your

IRA. I am sure that your generosity will be rewarded.”

We would also like to thank the Garrett Retiree Club (GRC) for their generous donation of $800 as

one of the two charities that their Club supports. This $800 is in addition to the $1500 already commit-

ted, which brings the GRC support to $2300 this operating year. It is greatly appreciated.

We hope that all of our members take the challenge and help us support the many bright and wor-

thy students that apply for a Honeywell Retiree Clubs Scholarship each year. For anyone who would

like to make a donation, please contact the Honeywell Scholarship Foundation Treasurer, Gwen

Our monthly meetings are held at the Scottsdale Senior Center, 1700 N. Granite Reef Road, (just north of McDowell). The meetings are held on the first Wednesday of every month, September thru May, except for December – our Holiday Luncheon. Our social hour begins at 1:00 pm, club business is conducted at 1:45 pm, the presentation starts at 2:00 pm and adjournment is at 3:00 pm.

Food Bank Turkey Dinner Distribution VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY

Tuesday, November 24th

Come help those in need at Thanksgiving time. Be a part of the giving.

We will be helping Desert Mission Food Bank distribute turkeys and the makings for the rest of

the Thanksgiving dinner to those who may otherwise not have one. We are looking for 40

able-bodied retirees (and family members) who can help with the distribution. There are a

few jobs for people for whom lifting turkeys etc. would be a problem – such as checking

credentials.

Where: Desert Mission Food Bank in Sunnyslope near 4th St. south of Hatcher (9229 N. 4th St.)

When: 8:00 AM - 12:30 PM, Tuesday November 24th. You’ll need to be there on time, since

there will be an orientation and job assignments.

What: We will be divided up into groups for multiple tasks, e.g. : validating credentials,

handing out food, bagging and stocking, and helping carry the food to their cars.

partners are encouraged to participate too. You will receive more details and a short sign-up
