1. Energy and Waste
Electricity needs and sources
• Energy needs are growing worlwide.
• The dependence on fossil fuels will remain high.
• It is anticipated a growing demand for renewable energy, particulary
electricity generators.
Additional Energy Efficiency Scenario: Evolution of installed capacity as energy sources.

Types of Waste for gasification
HazardousWaste
Biodegradable organic waste
• Are verypolluting
• High humiditycontent, >70%
Non-Biodegradable organic waste

«A city of 1.000.000 in population can generate between 300.000 and 500.000 Tm/year of waste»
2. The gasification
Advantages of the gasification
Elimination of most of theincoming waste
• Elimination between 80% and 98% of thewaste depending of its nature.
• The resultant ash, minimum volume, are inert.
• Easy to recycle or treat. Possibility torecover heavy metals.
Reducing the emission of gases
• A 40% CO2 and 100% CH4 .
• High filtration efficiency: it avoids theemission of toxic gases.
• SO2, SO3 and NOx (promoters of acid rain)
• Dioxins and furans (carcinogens).
High efficiencyand profitability
• Lower cost per kWhgenerated
Abundance of fuel
• No dependence onforeign
• Usable in separateareas
To eliminate waste To generate electricity
Gasification advantages over other
technologies
Incineration Biogas
Plasma Gasification
Pyrolysis
Gasification is the best technology for waste to energy from biomass and organic waste
Advantages of the gasification
front of the incineration
• It uses only 25-30% of the oxygen required for
complete combustion of organic matter,
avoiding emissions of CO2 to the atmosphere
(environmental benefits).
• In gasification, emissions of hazardous
compounds (dioxins and furans) are 1.000
items smaller.
• The energy efficiency of the gasification is
higher than incineration, getting electricity and
heat.
• It generates 40% of CO2 less per kWh
produced.
• Gasification allows smaller plants
(from 0,5 MW)
Advantages of the gasification
versus biodigestion
Biodigestionremoves 20% of theresidues, compared
to 90% of thegasification.
The digesters are useful with wet
waste.
They can be complementarytechnologies.
Advantages of the gasification
versus the plasma gasification
The plasma gasification works at 6.000ºC
The “classic” gasification requires lessinvestment and lower cost of operation and maintenance so it becomes more profitable.
Advantages of the gasification
versus the pyrolysis
Pyrolysis is only recommended when the
proportion of organic matter in the waste to
value is low.
3. GreenE plants
Applications of the gasification
Greene gasification plants adapt to any type of
organic solid fuel

Compared with other gasification
technologies
“Down draft”
• Only valid for verypure biomass.
• Pelletizing biomass isneeded.
• Ash content is limitedto ≤ 2,5%
“Fluidized bed”
• High cost of operationand maintenance.
• Pelletizing biomass isneeded.
• Ash content is limitedto ≤ 2,5%
Economical
• High profitability
• Great incentives for renewableenergy
• High performance
• Durability and high capacityfactor
• Low investmentper MW installed
Versatile
• Fully usable withheterogeneousorganic solid fuel
• Available from0,5 MW
• Possibility of use in remote areas
Ecological
• Elimination of alltype of waste
• Careful with theenvironment
