Growth of The Game

Holy Buckets – It’s Hot Outside! Having previously lived in Florida, I was expecting Missouri to be cooler and less humid. Now I know better…

In addition to the weather, the Foundation and the Growth of the Game programs and events are just as hot! One program just wrapped up, another is about to start, and still a third fun event is just around the corner.

The PGA of America has recently announced a national partnership with the Boys and Girls Clubs of America. Locally, the Gateway PGA had the opportunity to par-ticipate by bringing golf, in the form of the PGA Sports Academy, to the Boys and Girls Club in Hazelwood. After a five-session program, the Club Members were thrilled about golf. The final session, held at Ruth Park, allowed the juniors to meet and visit with Doug Castel-lari and his staff, tour the facility, and play T-Golf on the first hole. This same program will be run again in the Fall. Dates are still to be determined, but if you are interested in teaching the program, please contact the Gateway Office for more details.

Happening in only a few short days is Family Golf Night, put on by the Growth of the Game Committee and Yorktown Golf Course. On Saturday, August 4th starting at 5:00 pm, families from all over the St. Louis and Belleville area will be coming out to Yorktown for a cookout, games and activities, and a Goofy Golf Scramble. The event is open to the public, including PGA Professionals and their families. The format is loose with no competition – just FUN! Details and pic-tures to come in next month’s newsletter.

Finally, as the school year approaches, our In-School and After-School Programs start ramping up. This Fall, two schools have approached us requesting our PGA Professionals to teach and grow the game of golf to their students. We are delighted to oblige and are there-fore looking for PGA Professionals to sign up to teach some sessions. We will be looking for 1-2 Profession-als to teach an After-School Program at Pierremont Ele-mentary, and 3-4 Professionals to teach an In-School Program at The Lutheran Church of Webster Gardens. Another email will be sent out soon when registration opens. Participating Professionals will earn $40.00 per

session and 1 MSR Credit per hour taught. Again, please contact the Gateway Office with any questions.

When the summer season eventual-ly winds down and you find your-self with extra time on your hands, come join us for a Growth of the Game Committee meeting or out at a local school. We would love to have your help and support!

PGA Golf Day Marathon was a huge success raising a total of $87,944 for local charities and Gateway Section programs. The Section is very honored to have so many professionals who dedicated their time and talents in helping to raise this

money. A special thanks to Nathan Charnes, at WingHaven Country Club, for raising over $11,000 for PGA Golf Day! A

reception will be held at WingHaven Country Club on Aug 26th for the

professionals who met certain fundraising goals. Ozzie Smith will join the Gateway

Section Foundation in awarding our chosen charities with a check from our fundraising

efforts. The tournament points race is underway and will soon be updated on the

website. We look forward to another successful PGA Golf Day in 2013.

Time Management – Not an Easy Task! with customers in the golf shop or on the first tee, etc. In your daily scheduling, don’t forget about your own needs – playing and practicing, family time, meals, fitness, etc. Possibly the most important skill to possess to successful-ly manage your time is disci-pline. It takes discipline not to let yourself get distracted, to stay on the important tasks that are essential to you and your success. Please call on me at any time if you have any employ-ment related questions or concerns. I am here to help! One of the most important but also difficult tasks faced by busy PGA Professionals is managing the expanded workload and variety of tasks they face each day. Made even more difficult in recent years by expanded responsibilities and shrinking staff levels, many pro-fessionals find themselves struggling to find enough hours in a day to get things done. Everything can seem like an urgent and high priority task that only you can handle, which can lead to increased stress and the pos-sibility of burnout. This presents an important question…how can a busy professional avoid feeling overwhelmed? A fellow PGA Employment Consultant, Dick Bradow, had a great article in a recent PGA Magazine (June 2012) and I will share some of his advice and my own. The key to reducing stress is the development and use of strong time management skills. Research shows that most of us spend the majority of our time working on unimportant or low priority tasks, instead of utilizing that same time on higher priority or more valuable pro-jects. One of the fundamental time management prin-ciples is prioritizing items into the following matrix: (1) High importance/high urgency (2) High im-portance/low urgency (3) Low importance/high ur-gency (4) Low importance/low urgency Using this matrix can help you decide which items to tackle today and which can be set aside for later or be delegated to someone else. If you don’t use some type of system to prioritize your work, everything will seem like an urgent high priority item and your level of stress will increase. Many times we find ourselves spending too much time in quadrant #3, low im-portance and high urgency that prevents us from com-pleting the more essential tasks in quadrants 1 and 2. Another good time management skill is to eliminate time wasters and distractions. Try keeping a diary of everything you do for three days to determine how you are spending your time. You will likely be surprised at how much time you are devoting to non-productive, low-priority tasks and dealing with interruptions, at the expense of the things that are more important. To help eliminate this, plan your day and schedule specific times for various functions. Without a plan, you may find yourself working in a disjointed way and drifting from one thing to another all day. Designate time for administrative work, returning phone calls and emails, teaching and time on the practice range, interacting

Well the Summer heat wave is rolling on and with it is the 'Championship' portion of the 2012 tournament calendar. A big thank you goes out to all of our host facilities and the countless hours the superintendents and grounds crews are putting in to keep the golf courses in prime condition during this record breaking stretch of weather. The recently completed Gateway PGA PNC Qualifier at Persimmon Woods Golf Club was played in some dangerously hot weather and the scores were just as scorching with a course record tying performance by Lake of Egypt's Mark Faulkner on day 2 to take home the title and earn a berth in the 2013 PNC in Oregon. Mark birdied his last four holes in rout to an impressive final round 64 and a four shot victory. Also representing the Gateway Section will be Quincy's Gideon Smith and Mid Rivers' JC Anderson. Great playing Gentlemen, do us proud next Summer!! Remember that the fourth qualifying spot is up for grabs at The Section Championship on September 17-18 at Lockhaven CC. One of the most anticipated events of 2012 is the Senior PNC at Lake Forest on August 20-21. The top 5 finishers will qual-ify for the National Championship in October and have the chance to earn a berth in the 2013 Senior PGA Champi-onship in our own backyard at Bellerive Country Club. Best of luck to all of those attempting to qualify!! Here’s to cooler temperatures down the road and continued good golf.

Brett Moomey, PGA

On Friday, July 13th Jimmy Ballard paid a visit to the Gateway PGA for an educational op-portunity. Our PGA Professionals and guests were able to spend some quality time with the man of “connectivity”. Jimmy opened with a power-point presentation on his philosophy. The event was then moved outdoors where instruction and hands-on learning took place. Thank you to WingHaven Country Club for hosting the event. Below, we provided a few pictures of this great day.

Unplayable in a Bunker

The British Open prompted a lot of questions about declaring a ball unplayable in a bunker. Rule 28 deals with "Ball Un-playable". That rule tells us "the player may deem his ball un-playable any place on the

course, except when the ball is in a water hazard".

If the player deems his ball unplayable there is a one stroke penalty and he or she has three options as to where the ball can be dropped. The first option is to proceed under the stroke and distance provision of Rule 27-1. The second option permits the player to drop a ball keeping the point where it was unplayable directly

We would like to thank everyone that has signed up for this year’s Assistants Championship. We had a total of 35 players sign up through National, which is no change from last year. Those of you that have signed up through the National office will be playing for 2 spots at this year Na-tional Championship. If you did not sign up through National and are eligible to play in Gate-way PGA Section tournaments you may still sign up through Steve Finn at the Section Office. Don’t forget to pick up your raffle tickets at the section office. During the Assistants Cham-pionship we will be doing our drawing and the Grand Prize is a 4-some to Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville, KY. If you can not pick them up please call the section office and ask a staff member to mail them to you. See you at Westwood Country Club on September 4th!!

between the spot where it is dropped and the hole. There is no limit to how far behind that point the player can drop the ball. The third option is to drop a ball within two clubs of the spot where the ball lay, but not nearer to the hole. If the ball is in a bunker and the player selects either the second or third option a ball must be dropped in the bunker. However, if the player made a stroke at the ball in the bunker and it stayed in the bunker and the player declared it unplayable; the player would have to drop the ball in the bunker under all three options. This is due to fact that the previous shot would have been played from the bunker. Remember when proceeding under this rule the player can clean the ball or substitute a ball.

One often overlooked key piece of equipment is the golfer’s body. Golf requires a combination of strength, flexibility, timing, balance, power and en-durance. Making sure your golf workout program addresses all of these components of fitness means you have to pick an efficient and effective way to train. A golfer will always perform better and re-duce the risk of injury when properly conditioned. The question is, “What’s the best way to effectively and efficiently train for golf”? One way to both improve performance and reduce the risk of injury is core training. The easiest way to visual core is to imagine your body minus your arms and legs. From your hips to your shoulders, that’s your core, your power center, your key to perfor-mance and longevity. Golf is obviously a game that depends on rotation of the body to deliver power from the ground through the core to the club and finally the ball. An effective training strategy is to build stability in the lumbar spine, while optimizing mobility and power in the hips and upper, or thoracic, spine. Core strength for golf can be effectively trained with exercises that promote lower back stability with hip and upper back mobility. Core conditioning is important for golf, and suspension training is one way for fast and effective core performance. Suspension Training bodyweight exercise develops strength, balance, flexibility and core stability all at the same time. Enter the TRX, born in the Navy SeaLs and produced by Fitness Anywhere LLC in 2006. It is a performance training tool that leverages gravity and the user’s body weight to enable hun-dreds of exercises for every fitness goal. The TRX has become an essential exercise tool for cutting edge golf performance and injury prevention for coaches, trainers and athletes at all levels. The following are some TRX exercises for improved golf performance: TRX Golf Rotation exploits reflexive core en-

gagement for lower spine stability allowing

proper hip and upper spine movements required for golf.

TRX Lunge integrates single leg balance and stability with core engagement.

TRX Plank variations train core stability and body alignment.

Full Two-Arm Windmill is an example of a functional flexibility exercise.

Advantages: Benefits people of all fitness levels (pro athletes,

youth to seniors) Incredibly portable. Can be set up anywhere… gym, home, on-the-

road, outside, even from a golf cart! In a fast and effective way, it attacks the entire

body with cardio, mobility, balance, strength, and stability work. It’s a CORE-BASED total body workout, designed for functional training.

The movements are very un-reproducible. The TRX gives you the ability to change resistance in the middle of sets. You also have the ability to control movements.

The Titleist Performance Institute, a well known golf-fitness organization in conjunction with TRX, has produced the TRX Golf Workout DVD. A TRX workout can take your golf fitness to the next level. For best results contact Optimal Lifestyles to inquire about a TRX Trainer that can help walk you through a customized golf training program. For personal training assistance with golf fitness, help getting started on a fitness plan, or revamping your existing plan, contact Barb at Optimal Life-styles at 314-984-0592. Gateway PGA Professional National Championship Recap Faulkner is 2012 PNC Champion

Mark Faulkner came into the final round knowing he needed to put on a charge if he were going to qualify to move on into the 2013 Professional National Champi-onship. After an opening round of 1 over par 72, the Lake of Egypt Pro found himself tied for 7th with only 3 spots guaranteed a spot to move on. Standing on the 15th tee, Mark said to one of his fellow competitors that he thought he needed to make birdie on one of his last four holes to make it in. He then went on to an incredible finish, birdieing all four of his final holes, to tie the course record of 7-under par 64. It proved to be enough for a 3-shot victory over first round leader, Gideon Smith of Quincy CC. The final qualifying spot went to Mid Rivers GC's JC Anderson. The 3 alternates for the event are Scott Bess, Bob Gaus, and Mike Suhre. Players will have one more shot to qualify for the National PNC at Sun River Resort in Oregon next June by winning the Gateway PGA Section Champi-onship at Lockhaven CC on September 17-18th.

Escott & Smith Repeat as Sterling Cut Glass Champs

Meadowbrook CC's Adam Betz and Tower Tee GC's Steve Lotz, beat the heat and the field at the Gateway PGA Pro-Open at Sunset CC in the 2nd event of the 2012 Pro-Open Series. Betz, posted his first Pro-Open win in the Gateway PGA by firing an impressive 3-under par round of 69 which was good enough for a 1-stroke victory. Right on his heels were Mike Suhre (Oakbrook GC) and Mike Tucker (Bellerive CC), both who finished with 2-under par rounds of 70. The Falls GC Head Professional, Brian Schmersahl, came home 4th at 1-under par 71. Lotz, who has been in the hunt at every event he has entered in 2012, finished at 1-under par 71. It wasn't easy though as Mid-Rivers GC's Jeff Whitfield, also came in with a 71. The two players headed to the tough 1st hole at Sunset, a 579 yard par 5, for a sudden death playoff to determine the title. Lotz made a birdie 4, to secure his 1st win of the year. Bellerive CC's Brian Fogt, just back from the Sr. US Open in Michigan, finished 3rd with an even par 72 while Brad Hulett (The

Falls GC) and Steve Heckel (Crab Orchard) rounded out the top 5. Gateway PGA Professionals will head to Persimmon Woods GC for the Gateway Professional Championship on July 23-24th.

The team of Jeff Escott (Persimmon Woods GC) and Gideon Smith (Quincy CC) proved again to be a dominant force in the annual Sterling Cut Glass Team Championship at Quincy CC winning their second title in the past 3 years. Escott & Smith got off to an early lead and never looked back after posting rounds of 61 and 65 for a total of 14-under par. The 36 hole 4-Ball competition at the immaculate Quincy CC, provided a great test of golf for all of the Gateway PGA Professionals & Amateurs who competed. Escott & Smith teamed up for 16 birdies and only 2 bogeys throughout the day which proved to be enough for a 3 shot victory. Runner-up honors went to Dave Levine & Nash Haxel who came in at 11-under par. Shane Blankenship & Mike Suhre finished 3rd, while the Steve Lotz/Bob Gaus and Mike Tucker/Rob Sedorcek, tied for fourth.

Golf Is Cool By Jerry Tarde/www.golfdigest.com Photo by Stan Badz/PGA Tour

S peaker of the House John Boehner (R-Ohio) was

seated between Jay Haas and his son Bill at The First Tee Congres-sional Breakfast on National Golf Day in April. U.S. Rep. James E. Clyburn (D-S.C.) drew the short straw and had me at his table. Both congressmen spoke to about 100 assembled golf-industry leaders who were in Washington to lobby -- a bad word, I know -- for the game, but it was nice to hear the leadership of both parties agreeing on something. Clyburn said he was introduced to the sport by his father, an avid baseball player who inexplicably gave him a golf club for Christmas one year. "I grew up playing golf and baseball," he said. In 1971, when he went to work for South Carolina Gov. John West, he found himself at a staff retreat where the governor wanted to play golf and Clyburn was the only golfer on the staff. Their rounds together over the years built such a close relationship that West's widow, Lois, sent him his desk when Clyburn was elected majority whip. "All that grew out of golf," he said. Clyburn's other great golf experience came through his grandson, A.C. Reid, now 17, who was born prematurely and had three operations before he was 10 pounds. He grew up to love football but was physically better suited to golf. "I took him with me to the course, and he became a very good golfer," Clyburn said proudly. "He's got a 360-degree swing. One of my happiest days was spent playing in a pro-am with him and Davis Love III." It's at this point that Clyburn turned spokesman for The First Tee. "Golf to me," he said, "learned properly and practiced appropriately, teaches more about life than any other sport. It teaches honesty, integrity, discipline. You can't blame anyone else -- it's all about you against the elements." The First Tee is sometimes criticized by golf wonks for not sufficiently "growing the game." The First Tee isn't just about increasing participation, but it annually gives golf lessons to 2 million young people -- 40 percent of whom are minorities -- at more than 700 courses, 4,700 elementary schools and 120 military bases. In a 2012 drive to reach 10 million kids, $72.8 million had been

raised by mid-year toward a $100 million goal. That kind of funding wouldn't happen for "merely" a junior or minority golf initiative -- the genius of The First Tee is that it promotes the life skills Rep. Clyburn recogniz-es as unique about golf. The First Tee was only part of the message the golf industry brought to Washington: • Golf contributes $76 billion and 2 million jobs to the American economy, which makes it a big-

ger job creator than the motion-picture, publishing and telecommunications industries. • We fight this image of the game as an elitist and exclu-sionary sport, but nine out of 10 golfers don't belong to a private club, 85 percent of golf is played at public cours-es, and the average round costs just $25. • Golf raises more money for charity than all other sports combined. The PGA Tour efforts contribute about $120 million, but that represents only 3 percent of the annual $3.5 billion of golf fundraising for good causes. • Golf courses are great stewards of the environment, acting as leaders in their community for practicing water conservation, limiting chemical use and providing wild-life habitats. My favorite statistic I heard that day: Golf courses are 10 degrees lower in temperature than sur-rounding urban environments. What do you know -- golf is cool. Our efforts to get equitable treatment continue in Congress. Ever since Hurricane Katrina in 2005, the small businesses of golf have been excluded from disaster relief as legislation lumped us in with massage parlors and casinos as not being worthy of federal funding. "We don't want to be given special treatment compared to other industries; we just want to play from the same set of tees," PGA of America CEO Joe Steranka said. If you're a golfer, blue or red, we need you to help spread this message. And maybe the best way you can do it -- like Jim Clyburn -- is to pass the game along and intro-duce a friend or family member to the life skills of golf. Click HERE to read more.
