I am extremely proud and honored to be involved with the Gateway PGA. I have always felt that way but maybe more now after being part of June’s growth of the game initiatives.

Our Foundation helped pull together PGA Professionals, allied associations, and vendors across the area to deliver a phenomenal Women’s Golf Day presented by Callaway

Golf. Thank you to Mid Rivers Golf Links for providing a venue that allowed for over 100 women to experience and/or grow in the game of golf. Growth of The Game

I n the past month, the Gateway Foundation has been busy bringing golf to the lives of

many! Hosting two events of our own, and partici-pating in one outside event, made June a great four weeks. On Saturday, June 9th, the Gateway Foundation and Mid Rivers Golf Complex hosted 100 ladies for our Women’s Golf Day. These women ranged in experience from true beginners to competitive golf-ers, but they all had one thing in common… they love learning about golf! In a span of three hours, participants received instruction on every part of their golf game, had the opportunity to shop at 14 different vendors, were introduced to different golf fitness exercises and stretches, and were then able to socialize with their friends at Happy Hour. I would like to thank Alex Anderson, JC Anderson, Cindy Beache, Jill Bertram, Dennis Biedenstein, Barbara Blanchar, Missy Brennan, Sally Collins, Steve Finn, Nash Haxel, Helen Kurtin, Barb Mi-chael, Bev Miller, Josh Riley, Rob Sedorcek, and Jeff Whitfield for making this event a success. I would also like to thank David Kohlberg with Callaway for sponsoring the event. Exactly one week later, we were out at WingHaven Country Club for the first annual College Golf Combine! Forty juniors came out to test their golf game and physical fitness skills against twelve dif-ficult assessments. Participants and parents had a blast. Additionally, they were very appreciative of the opportunity to evaluate their games during such an important stage in their young golfing careers. This event will continue to grow as we received tons of positive feedback and heavy interest in holding another one next year. The following Pro-fessionals and helpers need to be thanked, again, for their hand in putting on a successful first Col-lege Golf Combine: Alex Anderson, Barbara Blanchar, Missy Brennan, Michael Brown, Katie Coufield, Steve Finn, Nathan Jacquin, Helen Kur-tin, Alisha Matthews, Kasey McCammack, Barb Michael, Josh Riley, Ed Schwent, and Rob Sedorcek. Also, a thank you goes to TaylorMade Adidas for sponsoring this one-of-a-kind event.

In between Women’s Golf Day and the College Combine, the Gateway Foundation made a stop at a block party in north St. Louis. An organization called Urban K-Life, which works with at-risk high school youth, invited hundreds of local families to attend a block party which reached much further than only one block. Offering free food, music, basketball tour-naments, kickball games, face painting, tee ball, and yes golf, families from all over the area showed up to have fun with their neighbors and meet new people. Golf was a huge hit with the kids – many asked when we would be returning! The Foundation was honored to have been asked to participate. Keep your eyes open for more information coming soon about our upcoming Family Golf Night. Tak-ing place at Yorktown Golf Course in Belleville, Illinois, the afternoon and evening will be filled with a family golf tournament, a cookout, and games and activities for the whole family. Save the date and bring your family out for a great even-ing of fun and golf! Again, more details and an event flyer will be arriving in your inbox soon. Finally, I have an injury update on Gateway Golfzilla. He’s been out and about so much during the month of June that we think he just became de-hydrated. While performing for a group, he injured his right foot, became light-headed, and fainted. We brought him inside to cool off in the air condi-tioning, took him to a podiatrist to fix his foot, and gave him a week to rest. It was a close one, but he’s back and he’s ready for more! Many dates are still open in July… book him now before it’s too late!

Golf 2.0 – Knowing your customer or CRM (Customer Relationship Management)

Plan are available on www.golf20.net. Log in with your PGALinks password and explore this very important part of growing the game and communicating with your customers and members. If you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact me. I am available for counseling on career planning, resume and cover letter writing, interviewing, negotiating and Golf 2.0 initia-tives. I welcome your questions and am willing to help in any way I can. Have a great summer! Tim Marks, PGA Employment Consultant 815.630.5196 – office [email protected]

Ask yourself, does my facility do enough, or any, cus-tomer tracking? Do we really know who our custom-ers/members are and what can we do to learn more? These questions are asked on a daily basis at facilities all over the country and CRM may be one of the more important practices that you can implement, or im-prove, to make your facility successful. Knowledge of your customers/members trends, likes, frequency of play and spending can go a long way to improve your communication and customer service/retention at your facility. There are five (5) steps in the “pathway to CRM… Relationship building – improving customer ser-

vice and relations to retain the core and grow rounds

Customer database development – the leading indi-cator of revenues, marketing, profiling, and effec-tiveness of planning

Communicating with your customer database – in order to increase customer/member retention and utilization of facilities – answering the questions of why communicate, how to communicate and what to communicate

Customer database segmentation – not all custom-ers/members are created equally – segment based on specific criteria and make communication and execution of plan more effective

CRM marketing plan execution – a personal com-munication system with your customers/members

Not every facility has the appropriate POS system to get all the information needed. Put a plan together with your employer to put one of these systems in place, or utilize your computerized handicap system to get some of the information you need to get started immediately. You may not have time during this busy summer to put time toward this, but you should give it some thought for the fall and winter in order to put a plan together to take advantage of this information to the fullest! The coming off-season will be a great time to communicate the “Facility Plan” (found on golf20.net) to your em-ployer. These steps are important in continuing to in-crease your worth at your facility. The “Know Your Customer” PlayBook and Facility

Women’s Golf Day

Women's Golf Day was sponsored by Callaway Golf who takes Golf 2.0 and welcoming women to the sport of golf very personally. Callaway brought tons of golf clubs for the ladies to try: putters, wedges, irons, hy-brids, woods, different set makeups, and bags.

About 100 ladies attended the 2012 Women's Golf Day presented by Callaway Golf.

Barbara Blanchar gave a wonderful opening address personally thanking every lady who attended, all helping Professionals, Mid Rivers Golf Complex for hosting us, and the vendors for brining product. She also explained how the event will flow and what every lady was to ex-pect and experience.

I t’s hard to believe that it’s already the 4th of July and all of our golf seasons are in full swing at our respective facilities. The 2012 Gateway PGA tournament program has several major events coming up in the next 2 months highlighted by the PGA National Qualifier events which all have deadlines approaching in the coming weeks. On the Pro-Am side, Annbriar will be a fine venue for the Sr. Pro-Am on Thursday, July 12 and the always well attended Pro-Ladies will once again be played at St. Albans with a double shotgun on July 30. Registration for all of the events are available on Blue Golf. For those looking to test their games against the best local amateurs and touring professionals, the Metro Open and Missouri Open will be played two weeks apart. Both events will be 54-hole championships this year with a cut com-ing after 36 holes. St. Albans will host the Metro Open July 12-14 and Old Hawthorne welcomes the Missouri Open July 26-28. Both events will feature strong fields and professional purses. On a personal note, I’d like to congratulate and wish good luck to Bellerive Director of Instruction Brian Fogt as he travels to Detroit for the 2012 United States Senior Open! I’m sure he’ll be a fine representation of the Gateway Section on the national stage!! Enjoy the rest of the summer, I hope to see everyone out on the links!! Assistants Corner

As PGA Professionals one our responsibilities is to teach the Rules of Golf to junior golfers. The Links at Kokopelli recently hosted a PGA of America Jun-ior Series Tournament. Bob Shogren and I served as rules

officials at this 54-hole event. From that experience here are a few things you want to be

sure your junior golfers know. If there is a possibility the ball may be out of bounds or lost outside of a water hazard they should play a provisional ball to speed up play. We had several de-lays in play because players did not play a provision-al. However, if the player plays a provisional and then discovers the ball is in a water hazard the provi-sional ball must be abandoned immediately.

Jesse Barge, PGA Master Professional

With deadline for the Assistant’s Championship fast approaching make sure that you are signed up through www.pgalinks.com. This will help with the number of spots that we can secure. How to apply: Login in to PGALINKS Click on Tournaments/Events Click on Section Assistant’s Championship Follow the steps from there Or Call 1-800-414-2116 and register through member services Sign up now through PGALinks to be eligible to qualify for the Assistants Championship!! The site for this year’s event will be Westwood Country Club.

Make sure to remove the phrase "line of flight" from your junior golfers’ rules vocabulary. There were a couple of times players substituted a ball for a ball in a water hazard on the line of flight. The ball needed to be dropped on a spot so the point where the ball LAST crossed the margin of the hazard is directly in line with the flagstick and the spot where the ball is dropped. Fortunately, in both situations, Bob and I stopped the players before they made a stroke at the ball dropped in a wrong place; thus avoiding the two stroke penalty. Finally, be sure juniors are aware that it is their respon-sibility to be on the starting tee and ready to play at the time prescribed by the committee. If a player has a tee time at 8:50 AM and arrives at 8:50:11 the player is late to the tee and will be assessed a two stroke penal-ty.

Testimonial Many thanks for sharing your knowledge with me today and helping me understand how the golf swing should work. I thought you were the wizard before I came, but now I am convinced that you are just that. But you have shown me that there is no real magic in striking the golf ball. Your theory is supported by the application of the laws of physics and also biomechanics. When a theory is supported by indisputable science,it is no longer a theory but rather a fact. The swing connection theory is a fact. I am forever grateful to have had the opportunity to hear and see it in person from the master himself. With great respect and appreciation, Gary W, Texas

With summer upon us, no doubt you’ve got a thirst for golf – but as you play, don’t forget to drink in the goodness of water or other hydrat-ing fluids. They help to keep your body cool, which prevents dizziness, fatigue, nausea and headaches and muscle cramps – all signs of possible heat exhaustion.

Water isn’t the only thing your body loses in the heat. Electrolytes such as sodium, potassi-um and chloride – which work to optimize your nerves and muscles – are also lost when you sweat. It’s important to replace these dur-ing continuous exercise lasting longer than 60 minutes. While sports drinks may be necessary for certain athletes performing high-intensity and prolonged exercise, plain water remains the ideal beverage for opti-mizing hydration.

Fluid Fact Although it may vary for different body weights and types, one measure to use is to drink half our body weight in ounces of water (for example, if you weigh 100 pounds, then you should drink at least 50 ounces of water per day). A body’s water needs can be met over the course of a day through a variety of fluids and foods, including vegetables, fruits, juices and milk. While water alone will quench thirst, some people may not drink as much as when they are drinking flavored water or beverages, such as low sugar sports drinks. Hydration Hints – Drink on a Schedule: Pre-hydrate - Drink 16 ounces of water two

hours before the start of physical activity.

Hydrate - Drink 8 ounces of fluid eve-ry 20 minutes during physical activity.

Rehydrate - Drink 16 to 24 ounces of fluid for every pound of body weight lost after exercise.

Prevent Dehydration Thirst is generally a good guide in determining

fluid intake, but don’t wait until you’re thirsty to start replenishing those fluids. Chances are, by the time you actually feel thirsty, your body is well on its way to becoming dehy-drated. In a dehydrated state the body is unable to cool itself efficient-ly, leading to heat ex-

haustion and possibly heat stroke.

Am I Dehydrated? It’s important to drink even before signs of thirst appear. One way to check your hydration level is to monitor your urine. It should be plentiful and pale yellow (like lemonade). If the urine is clear, then you’re over-hydrated. If the urine looks like apple juice or tea, then you’re dehydrated.

Gaus Sweeps 2012 Match Play Championships with Senior Win

Bob Gaus won his second Match Play Title of 2012 by winning the Sr. Match Play Championship at Sunset Hills CC. Gaus edged Bellerive CC teaching Professional Brian Fogt 2 & 1 in the Championship Match to secure the title. Like a heavyweight title fight, Gaus & Fogt traded blows the entire match. Gaus held a 1-up lead at the turn and Fogt evened the match after #11. After both players parred the tough #12 par 3, Fogt then birdied #13 to go 1-up. Gaus then got on a roll and birdied the next three holes, while Fogt also birdied #15 to keep it "All square", he found himself 1-down going to #17. Gaus then parred #17 while Fogt couldn't get it up and down from the front bun-ker to take the match to #18.

Gaus defeated Lake of Egypt CC's Mark Faulkner 1-up in the semi-finals, while Fogt edged Tower Tee's Ste-ve Lotz 1-up to reach the final. More...
