From the Parish Priest Many thanks to all who make a regular contribution to Church funds and

to all who contributed to the Gift Days that were held earlier this year.

In addition to funding in full the cost of a Parish Priest, the funding for the

Parish Church building, its fabric, repair and maintenance is also the full

responsibility of the local church and this also includes heating costs,

insurance and other provision such as roof alarm contract fees.

In King’s Cliffe grant applications are now being made for the repairs to

the Church Tower and for the refacing of the Church Clock. A new gas

boiler also needs to be installed.

There is still an opportunity to make a one-off gift donation or to make a

regular donation to the work of each of the parish churches in our

Benefice. Please contact the Church Treasurer if you would like to make a

donation in this way.

Ride and Stride This year three ladies took part in the Ride and Stride with all their journeys

starting at King’s Cliffe and ending at Oundle. Sue Trow-Smith walked with a

friend, Jo Jones walked with her mother and Gill Kingston, who has cycled for Ride

and Stride for many years, was our rider. They all visited many churches and,

between them, collected £1,020 for Historic Northamptonshire Churches of which

£510 will be returned to King’s Cliffe Church. Many thanks to all the people who

sponsored them and to the church sitters who welcomed many visitors taking

part from their own churches. Sheila Jackson

Harvest Supper The Harvest Supper was a lovely occasion. We had vast amounts of delicious food,

including cottage pies, fish pies and vegetarian pies, cooked by our talented chefs,

Louise Bowen-West and Katie Ansty. This was followed by meringues, fruit

crumbles and many more tasty dishes provided by the congregation. During the

supper we had a challenging quiz created by Susannah Sutton and after the meal

we were entertained by folksongs from the gifted band, HMS Welland. Thank you

to all who contributed to make this a splendid evening. Mandy Barber

Church Coffee Morning The October Coffee Morning was again a very happy, lively affair. We thank Pam

and Bryan for their warm hospitality and a wonderful array of cakes and biscuits

and coffee to enjoy. Our thanks also to all who came to support the morning and

provide good things to eat and raffle prizes. We are able to give £145 towards

church funds. The next Church Coffee Morning will be at 10.30am on November

13th at 40 West Street. Please do come along; a warm welcome awaits!

King’s Cliffe Ecumenical Women’s Fellowship Group We began our recent meeting by focusing our thoughts on ‘Harvest’. Afterwards,

Heather Nurse shared her knowledge of bobbin lace with us. We were very

interested to hear about her lace-making journey and to see her, and Heather

Bradford, demonstrating how lace is made. We also saw some lovely photographs

and examples of lace work and bobbins. Thank you, Heather, for your fascinating

talk and also thank to Heather Bradford for helping with the demonstrations. Our

next meeting will be held on Thursday 7th November at 2.00pm in the CHAOS

room, King’s Cliffe Church, when Barbara Wilshaw will be our speaker. Please

remember to bring your money and meal choices for your Christmas Lunch.

KC Ladies Group

We had a very successful October meeting when Jo Hellard gave a talk and

demonstration of Weleda skin products to 12 members of the group. It was great

to see so many ladies enjoying a lunchtime chat and interesting talk. On the same

day, eight ladies went to the Bombay Cottage Indian Restaurant in Stamford for a

wonderful evening meal and we have to thank two very kind husbands for

providing a taxi service! Our next meeting will be on Monday 4th November

when Charles Tomalin from the Transition Group will give a talk on Wild Places

and an update on current projects. Once again, it would be great to see as many

ladies as possible at the Ex Servicemen’s Club at 12.15pm. Diana would be

pleased to answer any queries on 01780 470427. Pat Hawkins

Cliffe Fest On behalf of both the KCEPS PFA and KC Active, a huge thank you goes out to all

the children, parents, family and friends who came out to support Cliffe Fest. It

was an absolute triumph! A special mention also to all those wonderful people

who helped and volunteered on both the day and during the run up to Cliffe Fest.

Save the date for Cliffe Fest in 2020 – 12th September! Laura Hopkins

Used Stamps for the Leprosy Mission

Thank you for saving your used stamps. Special thanks to Mr & Mrs Bill Lindsay of

West Street for a large bundle of used stamps and to Chris Thistlethwaite for his

stamp album. He has had a stamp album since he was 12 and there are valuable

stamps there. Stamps raise money so that medication can be bought to help poor

people with leprosy be healed. Barbara Wilshaw

King’s Cliffe Old Blokes’ Club

Our Speaker on 4th November will be Stephen Barker, a Military Historian, who

will tell the story of Hardit Singh Malik, an RAF WW1 flying ace. As ever the

meeting will be held at KC Active at 11.00am and lunch will cost £5. The Get Fitter

groups meet on Wednesday at 10.00am for men and 11.30am for women. The

Friday mixed group meet at 10.00am. A 5-day tour of the Somme Battlefields will

start on 9th November and include a visit to the Menin Gate to witness the Last

Post on Remembrance Day. Chris Jackson (03330 113776)

King’s Cliffe Parish Council Neighbourhood Plan: The Neighbourhood Plan has now been ‘made’ and is a

legal planning document. The Parish Council would like to thank all those who

helped in its production, especially the Steering Group, as well as those who made

contributions to the consultations and those who took part in the Referendum.

Allotments: We have some space available within our Allotments. If you are

interested in an Allotment, either a full one or part of one, then please do not

hesitate to contact the Parish Clerk.

Cemetery: We would like to remind everyone that, within the new Cemetery,

there is an area for the burial of cremated remains. For more information please

contact the Clerk.

Traffic Calming: The traffic calming features, which comprise two gates on the

Apethorpe Road and one gate on the Blatherwycke Road, have been ordered.

Pytchell: The Parish Council is aware that the barrier separating the Pytchell from

the river has been removed which is very disappointing and potentially dangerous.

This follows the loss of the table from the Pytchell last month. We will be

installing a new fence but, in the meantime, if you go into the Pytchell with

children, please exercise care. Tracey Green (Parish Clerk)

Neighbourhood Plan The Referendum to accept the Neighbourhood Plan was passed by 400 votes to

51, with a 38% turnout. If we take the Village Plan as the build-up to the

Neighbourhood Plan, and it did provide a lot of helpful information, then the

process started back in 2012. It has, therefore, taken some time to complete, but

at least we can hope that, for the next decade, King’s Cliffe can develop in the way

that the majority of those participating want. Chris Leuchars (Steering Group)

King’s Cliffe Gardeners’ Association Our November meeting will be held on Wednesday 27th at 7.30pm at KC Active.

We will be pleased to welcome Nicola Fenton, a qualified medical herbalist who

practises locally at Fenton’s Herbology; you may remember her from the

Transition Fair last year. Her talk is entitled ‘Medicine from your Garden’.

Top gardening jobs for this month: Buy and plant new fruit trees and bushes

(wait if ground is frosted or too wet). Prune existing fruit trees, red and white

currants and gooseberries. Parsnips can be left in the ground until needed;

celeriac left for a bit but protect from the cold. continued overleaf

100th Birthday Celebration Mrs Kathleen Fenn, who I think may be King’s Cliffe’s oldest resident, will be 100

on 17th November. She has lived in Cliffe nearly all her life and has been involved

in many organisations including the Church, Gymkhana, Gardening Club, WI and

many others. She lived in Wellington House Farm with my father and, after his

death, moved to Park Street and finally to Fineshade Close. She has been in St

John’s Care Home, Digby Court, Christopher’s Lane, Bourne PE10 9AZ for just over

two years now and keeps very well, apart from being wheelchair bound.

We are having Open House at Digby Court on her birthday from 2.00 pm onwards

and, if any of her old friends and acquaintances would like to come along, you will

be very welcome. If you are not able to come on the actual day she would be

pleased to see you at any time! Jean Seed (07908 417604 01780 410516)

Transition King’s Cliffe for environment and community Christmas Fair: We have been busy preparing the 10th

King’s Cliffe Christmas Fair and, as ever, we are amazed by

the talent we have locally! From painting to pottery,

woodwork to willow weaving, screen-printing to stitching,

there will be something for everyone.

Our emphasis is on environmental

sustainability and high quality crafts made locally. This is a

lovely community event organised by volunteers with live

music, cafe, raffle, bar and food stalls to make it a great start

to advent! Visit our Transition table to see the amazing raffle

prizes and talk about what TKC do in King’s Cliffe and how you can get involved. We

even have some simple ideas and products to help reduce plastic use at home. So,

Avoid the Mall, come down to the Hall

on Sunday 1st December from 11.00am to 4.00pm at King’s Cliffe Village Hall.

Free entry. More details, including what will be for sale, at

www.transitionkingscliffe.org.uk/events

Wildplaces: Weather willing, by the time you read this, we will hopefully have

completed our autumn jobs with the tidy up of Maltings Green. We now turn to

our big project for the winter, installing additional footpath access from the

railway cutting by Meadow Bridge up to the Village Field via a new footbridge and

gate into the field near the wildflower meadow. This will provide an additional

route from Wood Lane up to Millennium Wood and beyond! This is our largest

single project to date, and will run from November to February involving more

effort than the completion of the path to Second Drift last year, so we are looking

for as much help as possible. It will be great fun and will be a significant

community asset when we’re done – something to be proud of. We need help

with everything from chainsaws to loppers, building and managing bonfires,

spades and rakes, post whacking and nailing rails. Even collecting up twigs and

bits for burning will be really helpful. Training and tools provided (not for

chainsaws!). First Workparty date will be Sunday 17th November from 10.30am

at Meadow Bridge – between Wood Lane and Willow Lane. However there will

be ad hoc sessions as well, so please sign up via the link below, and keep an eye

on our Facebook page as well.

involved, please get in touch: [email protected]

Underground any time for further information on any of our sessions.

Annual General Meeting: Underground are holding their AGM on November 21st

at 7.30pm. Please do come along and hear more about what we do and why we

do it! We had a wonderful year last year and are looking forward to telling you all

about it alongside our plans for this year. We are always looking for more people

to come and get involved – the more help and support we have, whether that be

behind the scenes or helping with groups, the more we can achieve.

The Way We Were

11

The Way We Were “Remember, Remember the Fifth of November” goes the old song but, on this

occasion, I’m remembering not Guy Fawkes and the Gunpowder Plot in 1605, but

the opening of the King’s Cliffe Gas Works in Bridge Street on 5th November 1860.

The coming of gas was received enthusiastically. The Stamford Mercury of 26th

October 1860, reported that, as well as a public dinner to celebrate the occasion,

there were plans to make it a general half-holiday “with the recently-formed

brass, drum and fife bands and the new set of bell-ringers no doubt adding to the

pleasures of the day”. Whether the half-day holiday became reality is not

reported, but the celebratory dinner certainly did, as reported two weeks later in

the Stamford Mercury:

King’s Cliffe: On Monday last – 5th November – a public dinner was held at the

Cross Keys Inn to celebrate the opening of the gasworks. The lighting of the streets

with gas, which took place for the first time on Saturday last, will form a new era

in the annals of Cliffe history, and will be looked upon as the commencement of

improvement and progress in this small town. It is only three months since the

introduction of gas was first seriously entertained and already, in the face of

distrustful prognostics as to its feasibility, not only were the streets illuminated

with a bright light, but a great many of the inhabitants have availed themselves of

the advantage. The gasometer was erected by Mr Bower of St Neots, Hunts; also the

retorts and other apparatus, which to the eye appear to have been constructed

substantially. The gas-posts and lamps were cast and erected by Mr J Wright,

ironmonger, of Stamford.

Among those enterprising enough to take out shares in The King’s Cliffe Gas, Light

and Coke Co Ltd in 1860 were several who, at the same time, were urging for a

railway line to come through Cliffe. Achievement of the gasworks project in only

three months must have given them cause for hope, but in fact it took another

nineteen years for the railway station to open.

The gasworks stood beside the Willowbrook bridge at the bottom of Bridge Street

and they continued to produce gas for the village until 1920 when the gasometer

was lost in a storm. The former retort house – where coke was burned to create

the gas – later became part of F Bould & Son’s garage premises. After Bould’s

garage closed at the end of 1998, all the buildings were demolished and the site

was cleared to make way for four new houses, numbers 15a-15d Bridge Street.

St Nicholas Church, Bulwick Dress A Girl Around the World: Our next Workshop will be on Monday 18th

November at which there will be an update on what has been produced and

where the items have been sent. We shall then take a break until 20th January

2020. The group has also been producing some wonderful craft items which have

been on sale at various events. The proceeds have been divided between The

Children’s Society and Northamptonshire Eve Family Refuge. Details of the

amount raised for the year will be announced next month.

St Nicholas and Holy Trinity Churchyards: The Parochial Church Council works

hard to keep both churchyards in good order. If you are willing and able to help

do please get in touch. Surveys on both churchyards have revealed that some

headstones are in need of attention. Where possible, relatives will be contacted.

Meet the Neighbours: On Saturday 7th December there will be a Meet the

Neighbours Coffee Morning from 10.00am to 12.30pm in Bulwick Village Centre.

This will be a good opportunity to meet up, enjoy a coffee, have a chat, exchange

Christmas cards, leave a message for St Nicholas, have a go on the Christmas

raffle and put forward your ideas for future events. All are most welcome.

Annual Bulwick Horticultural Show 2020: The committee has reviewed the

suggestions received and made the decision to hold the Show over the fourth

weekend in August, the 22nd and 23rd, not over the Bank Holiday weekend. The

preliminary schedule will be distributed this month to all eligible villages and will

set out the requirements for senior and junior photography, plus the senior crafts

sections. The full schedule will be circulated in April. Many thanks to all who put

forward their thoughts and suggestions. The committee hopes the change of date

will be beneficial but only time will tell. Alma O’Neill, Churchwarden (450300)

the heart-warming true story of Tony Lip (Viggo Mortensen), a working-class

Italian-American bouncer who takes on a job as a chauffeur for Dr Don Shirley

(Mahershala Ali), a highly-educated African-American classical pianist, who is

touring the deep south of America.

Book Club: This month we will meet on 12th November from 7.30pm. The book

to be discussed is A Woman of No Importance by Sonia Purnell. The book

between courses at the Christmas Lunch, so get your tickets soon!

Coffee Morning: This month’s Coffee Morning will be held on 9th November from

10.00am to 2.00pm. It will include a Trash and Treasure Sale, organised by Derek

autumn declutter! As this is a special Coffee Morning you may notice that the

opening times have been slightly extended. There will be the usual tea, coffee

and cakes in addition to bacon rolls for you to enjoy. Tables will be available for

donation to the Commonwealth War Graves Commission . To date a total of £692

has been donated to this cause. Would all those who wish to kindly donate this

year please leave their contribution with me at Gwen’s Cottage, 15 Main Street,

Communicare

14

Communicare At the recent AGM of Communicare Mrs Clare Wagstaffe resigned her position as

Chairperson and presented the following report to the meeting:

“In September 2018 I gave notice of my intention to stand down from the

Committee of the PPG at this year’s AGM which is our 39th. I have been involved

since the very beginning, so my decision was taken with very mixed emotions.

“I feel it appropriate at this time to give a brief summary about the PPG (Patient

Participation Group) and its beginnings, for those who are not aware of the facts.

Back in 1981 Dr John Holland, who was the single-handed GP at King’s Cliffe

Surgery, decided that patients should have more involvement in their local

practice. The aims of the PPG were threefold:

• To help yourself – health education talks, becoming better informed.

• To help others – social group, voluntary transport, prescription delivery, news.

• To help the practice – being a mechanism for discussion and feedback. It has

also resulted in a large amount of equipment being purchased to increase

patient comfort and care – over £100K since the outset.

“Dr Holland also felt there was a need to remove the sense of isolation from

elderly patients in rural areas. Situations had moved on and extended families

were often no longer able to offer support. To these ends he paid for a coach to

go around the villages once a month and bring the elderly into a central/social

environment and, at that time, nurses or a health visitor would join us for coffee

and a chat. All this was very forward thinking within the medical community so

we have a lot to thank the late Dr Holland for. These gatherings were originally at

Apethorpe Hall then, for many years, at Laxton Hall. Since then we have met at

Yarwell Village Hall and now at King’s Cliffe Active Hall. These events are still well

supported with short break holidays each year and several summer day trips. This

year our destinations were Weston-super-Mare and St Leonards-on-Sea.

“We are very lucky that, when Dr Gill Tuck, Dr Amrit Takhar and Dr Rhiannon Nally

joined the Practice, they were all equally supportive of the concept of the PPG

and Drs Takhar and Nally continue to encourage and develop the PPG today.

“I feel the time is now right to step down and for fresh blood and ideas to take

over. I have enjoyed all the involvement and seen many changes (some good,

some not so good!) and I shall be happy to continue to serve the PPG, in the

background, with particular emphasis on the organization of the group’s social

activities, for as long as I am able and needed. My thanks for all the support I

have had over the years and I wish the PPG continued success and development.”

Nature Notes

20

Nature Notes for October and November There can be a lot to see and appreciate on a woodland walk at this time of year.

With the soft sunlight streaming onto the fallen leaves everything seems to glow

in shades of yellow, orange and brown. The bracken glistens as it turns from pale

green to rusts and yellows.

Standing to listen to the sounds of the wood you hear the rattle of large acorns as

they bounce from branch to branch before a final thud on hitting the ground.

High in the canopy the liquid zwik-zwik call of Nuthatches appears to be all

around and yet they can be difficult to find amongst the leaves. The raucous cry

of a Jay, our most colourful crow, attracts my attention as it lands in a nearby

tree, revealing a prominent white rump. Through the leaves the blue wing-bar is

evidence of its presence, but much of the bird is hidden from view.

Along an open section between the trees, a Silver-washed Fritillary flies down to

settle on some brambles. It is late in the season for this butterfly and it is less

active than in warmer weather, making it easier to study. Further into the wood,

where the sun illuminates a large oak trunk, a Red Admiral warms itself, wings

fully opened. It remains motionless for a long time; just another indication of

seasonal change.

As the Grey Squirrels forage for nuts on the woodland floor, a Green Woodpecker

flies up only a few metres away making its distinctive yaffling call. Not far away a

Tree Creeper busily probes the bark of fallen trees in search of food. It uses its

sharp, downturned bill to access the smallest of crevices.

Then, on the way home, a Peregrine Falcon flies close by and lands in a tree. It is

a male with a slate grey back, prominent moustache and white underparts. There

have been other sightings around King’s Cliffe recently, so look out for this

handsome raptor. Fledgling
