Meet Member Carol KaussCarol moved to The Garlands from Inverness in 2017, two years after her beloved husband of 55 years passed away. She grew up on the north side of Chicago, Lincoln Square, walking distance to St. Matthias Church and School. Senior year in high school a boy named Jim figured in her circle of friends. One night Jim’s older brother Ted arrived to pick him up, saw Carol, and, forever after, said that was it for him. He fell in love on the spot, and, as soon as he got her attention, so did she. Carol describes him as honest, hardworking, kind, and sooo much fun …Ted headed off Loyola; after high school Carol went to work as the secretary to Dr. Van Dellan, who penned the Trib column “How To Keep Well” which appeared five days a week for decades. She stayed until well after she and Ted married and started their family, finally leaving to raise their three sons. When their littlest started school, she made good on her commitment to be-come a registered nurse (Harper College). By that time Ted had completed grad school (North-western) and permanently established himself at William Blair. Carol worked at Northwest Community Hospital and Children’s Memorial until she retired. She feels extremely fortunate to have helped Judy Hicks create and establish the Children’s Memorial Home Care Resources program.Carol is only on campus in the spring and fall, spending winters in Vero Beach (John’s Island) and summers on Pine Lake in Michigan where, throughout the summer, she’s joined by her three sons, their wives, and, at some point, all 11 grandchildren and the friends they bring. When she is here, Carol looks forward to attending more lectures/performances and making new friends at The Garlands. Be sure to introduce yourself if you see her!

One Anothering Series

November - Comfort One Another by Karen StathakisAs I thought about what comfort has meant to me, I immediately remembered the soft, brown teddy bear I took to bed with me as a child. Other children have a special “blankie” or a stuffed animal that provides comfort for them. In later years, I experienced the cozy feeling of a warm, puffy comforter on cold winter nights. I must confess there’s even been a slight sense of comfort in eating a piece of the warm peach pie, following a major (or minor) disappointment. I believe that we were created to be comforted in different ways at different times; we’ve probably all developed ways to comfort ourselves. When a challenging season arrives, such as a time of illness, accident or death of someone close to us, we may not recognize the need and benefit of being comforted by another person. Hopefully, the right person or people will be nearby, but sometimes we may have to seek someone out and express our need. Some people may want someone to talk to, or pray with them; others may just want someone to sit with them.

Perhaps it would be comforting to have someone make difficult phone calls for you, take you on an important errand, or go with you to a support group. While we experience comfort in different ways, the reality is there will be times when we need to be comforted.I watched my husband live through 30 years of kidney failure, including 20 years of hemodialysis and fifteen surgeries. I can’t imagine how I would have made it through that season without encountering many comforters along the way. I’m so grateful they were there for me.The Bible calls God “our merciful Father and the source of all comfort. He comforts us in all our troubles so that we can comfort others. When they are troubled, we will be able to give them the same comfort God has given us.” 2 Corinthians 1:3-4 NLTAs the Scripture above indicates, when we have received the benefits of being comforted ourselves, we are better able to comfort one another. That’s a blessing for all.Biblical references: 1 Thessalonians 5:11 NKJV; 1 Thessalonians 4:18 NKJV

From Bob Zilkowski

How was the name The Garlands given to our home?

From Joyce CarlsonDuring the planning years, more than 18 years ago, it was one of many thoughts. Early history of a gar-land was honor upon one who had achieved status and achievement during their years of life. Members have certainly proved that to be accu-rate when you read their profiles.
