Things are starting to look up . . . finally
Are you ready for some good news? It’s hard to believe reports espous-
ing economic recovery, especially considering the construction indus-try’s long, hard fall from its peak. However, for the first time in five years, we can say the industry has improved over last year — and we have the numbers to prove it.
Every year, the Business Review ranks the top contractors from Tampa to Naples by their annual revenues.
For the first time since 2007, com-bined annual revenue for the list of Top 50 Contractors is up over its previous year. The revenues for those contractors improved 9.4%, from $1.62 billion in 2010 to $1.77 billion in 2011.
In addition to their combined rev-enues rising, 29 firms posted rev-enue increases from 2010 to 2011. And 14 of those recorded growth of more than 20%.
Of course, we realize that better does not mean good.
The numbers prove this as well. For example, the top three con-tractors on our list in 2007 posted combined revenues of $1.12 billion. That’s 58% of total revenues for all 50 in 2011.
This year’s list also illustrates a continued trend for the companies that have made it and thrived dur-ing the downturn: they have adapted their business to the work available.
Throughout the ranking, you’ll no-tice many of the noteworthy projects mentioned for each company feature public projects, from infrastructure
such as roads and bridges to public facilities such as police buildings and schools.
Tampa-based Prince Contracting — No. 1 on our list this year — di-versified its business to pursue more public projects and expand its offer-ings to include design-build work. Its strategy led to a 57.7% increase in gross revenues in 2011 over the previous year, to $159.15 million. See page 10A for more on Prince.
The fastest-growing company on the list, Veteran Constructors, with 130% revenue growth, used the owner’s sta-tus as a disabled veteran to secure gov-ernment work. It increased revenues from $5.65 million in 2010 to $13 mil-lion in 2011. That strategy comes with its own unique challenges, which you can read about on page 10A.
As for the companies fighting de-clining revenues, Tarpon Springs-based Hawkins Construction Inc. continues to shrink. The firm was No. 3 on the list in 2009 and 2010, but experienced a 20% decrease in 2011 with $85 million in revenues.
Besides a fall in revenues, the re-cession has also brought decreasing margins. Although it means com-panies have had to increase their efficiency and decrease their costs, it also means the top contractors this year are lean and mean, and will likely get stronger in the com-ing years. Hopefully, the same will be true for the construction industry as a whole; we’d like to report more good news next year.
-Kat Hughes
