GEITA GOLD MINE Geita Gold Mine Challenges In Tanzania, threats by illegal miners and trespassers have escalated, primarily driven by a higher gold price in recent years. A study on behalf of Geita Gold Mine found 17 small scale artisanal (ASM) mine sites in and around the Geita Gold Mine site, directly involving more than 6500 people in illicit mining and processing activities. Illegal ASM activity negatively impacts the environment, particularly downstream water quality when mercury use is used in processing. There were 24 third party community fatalities within the GGM Special Mining Lease in 2012, many of which were the result of unsafe illegal mining methods including void collapses. Further fatalities were the result of drowning in the Nyankanga Dam. The Police and Resident Mines Officer (MADINI) are routinely called to investigate all fatalities that occur on the mine site. In response Geita Gold Mine is undertaking a number of measures including the development of an Artisanal and Small- Scale Mining strategy which includes working in partnership with the Ministry of Energy and Minerals, the World Bank, African Barrick Gold and the ASM Sector to identify opportunities to support ASM formalisation. Geita Gold Mine also signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Tanzanian Police Service in December 2012 to formalise cooperative measures between the company and the Tanzanian police. Geita Gold Mine adheres to the Voluntary Principles on Security and Human Rights in all security-related matters. Geita Gold Mine Future AngloGold Ashanti is working hard to ensure a prosperous future for Geita Gold Mine. Our geologists are working hard to identify new reserves to extend the life of our current assets. Headquartered in Johannesburg South Africa, AngloGoldAshanti Limited (AngloGold Ashanti) is the largest goldproducer in Africa, with further operations around theglobe. Geita Gold Mine is AngloGold Ashanti’s whollyowned and managed operation in Tanzania, it is thelargest single gold mining operation within the group andis Tanzania’s most productive mine. The mine is located inNorth West Tanzania, near the shores of Lake Victoria.

AngloGold Ashanti has invested $ 600 million in Geita Gold Minesince 2000. Geita Gold Mine is an open cast mine, with threepits, it currently employees 1,721 people directly, with a further1,820 contractors and 155 casuals and apprentices.Approximately 95% of these employees are Tanzanian.

Geita Gold Mine has paid $683 million in direct contributions tothe Tanzanian government through taxes and royalties since2000; in 2012 our contributions totalled $213.8 million, asignificant increase on 2011’s $101.1 million.

Geita Gold Mine Q4 2012 Quarterly Update

Financial and Operational PerformanceGeita Gold Mine produced 118,000 oz gold in Q4 2012. Outputfrom the mine fell 18% compared to the same period last year, and fell 7% compared to the previous quarter. These results areconsistent with our business planning in which we arestockpiling higher grade material for a scheduled replacement ofthe primary mill in Q1 2013. Annual production was 531 koz, anincrease of 7.5% on 2011.

Output costs for the quarter were $825 /oz. This is a 70%increase compared to the same period last year, and a 21%increase on the last quarter. Rising costs are attributed to acombination of factors, on one hand there was a plannedslowdown in output and the impact of increased royalties on ahigher gold price. This was further compounded by the supplychain write down of year-end consumables stock. Annual cashcosts were $653 /oz, an increase of 22% on 2011.

Safety and Environmental PerformanceIn 2012 Geita Gold Mine’s ‘All injury frequency rate’ was 1.62per million hours worked, tragically there was one fatality on siteduring this year, in a light vehicle accident. Safety is our numberone priority, and we are proud of the fact that safety incidentrates have fallen 75% since 2009.

Only one reportable environmental incident occurred during2012. The incident, in which excess vegetation was cleared, was reported to Geita authorities, compensation was paid andthe area was revegetated using indigenous tree species. Geitaretained its ISO 14001 certification which remains valid untilJune 2013.

Social PerformanceGeita Gold Mine is proud of its positive social investments in andaround the mine site. We believe that our host community will bebetter off for Geita Gold Mine having been there, and we achievethis by aligning our community investments to the MillenniumDevelopment Goals (MDGs).
