Gender studies
Gender studies at HullThe University of Hull’s innovative programme in gender studiesoffers an exciting opportunity to study concepts and issues ofgender from a range of perspectives, both interdisciplinary andinternational. Gender studies is a rapidly developing field, concerned with the roles, identities and status of women and menin society and their variation through time and space. It also paysattention to the ways in which gender structures different areasof knowledge and relates to other significant categories such asethnicity, class, age and sexuality.A focus on the interrelationshipsbetween women and men, and between ‘femininity’ and‘masculinity’, makes gender studies a development from the long-established field of women’s studies.
In the 21st century an understanding of gender relations hasnever been more crucial. The past century has seen a fundamentaltransformation of gender relations, which has had a profoundimpact on economies and social relations worldwide. In response, gender issues have become a major focus within both academicand political spheres. They have not only had a profoundtheoretical impact across the social sciences, philosophy andliterature; they have also influenced policy making in Europe,North America and other places, where equal-opportunitiespolicies have radically affected employment legislation.
Globally, gender issues have become a focus and preoccupationfor political activity and social movements of all kinds; and the UNconferences on women demonstrate the pervasive commitmentof key decision makers to gender-related issues.Within thiscontext, the gender studies programme at Hull is making a majorcontribution to an established, but still developing, academic andpolitical agenda.
The University of Hull led the way nationally in gender studiesprovision at undergraduate level, with its first intake in 1994. In1998 we introduced a range of Masters courses to complementour already established profile of doctoral supervision.
Despite such developments, we are still small enough to knowour students well. Providing a good level of pastoral care remainsa priority. Each student is allocated a supervisor in Gender Studieswho, wherever possible, is their supervisor throughout the degreeprogramme, so there is always someone at hand who can help.
Centre for Gender StudiesHull has been at the forefront of research and teaching in genderstudies for over two decades.
The Centre for Gender Studies, established in 1986, provides alively forum for debate. There are monthly seminars during term-time and occasional day schools, both involving speakers from awide range of disciplines and countries.
The Centre for Gender Studies has also hosted the annualWomen’s Studies Network Conference. Speakers came fromIndia, South Africa, Sudan, Japan, the USA and Nigeria, as well asEurope.
Journal of Gender StudiesThe Journal of Gender Studies was founded by the Centre forGender Studies, with which it retains close links. It is a quarterlyinterdisplinary and international journal which publishes articlesrelating to gender on a wide range of subjects.

Degree structure
The interdisciplinary structure of our programme, as well asthe high level of commitment across the University, makes Hullan ideal setting for a degree incorporating gender studies.Gender studies can be read as a minor degree subject incombination with a range of other subjects across the arts andsocial sciences. EllenaWhiteBA English with GenderStudies
Taking gender studies at Hull has
been an enriching experience for
me. I chose to do it alongside
English, my main subject, and am
really glad I did.There is a vast
amount of crossover between my
subjects, and I feel my learning in
both fields has been enhanced by
this. Gender is a fascinating
subject, and Hull offers many
varied, interesting and brilliantly
taught modules. Studying gender
has been an invaluable experience
for me – opening my eyes,
challenging my preconceptions and
giving me fascinating insights into
the world around me.
One major reason I applied to
study the subject at Hull was the
opportunity that the University
offers to study in the Netherlands
for a semester.This is an
experience I would recommend to
anyone – not just as an exciting
way to sample a new culture but a
rewarding, enlightening and, above
all, fun and unique adventure that
really sets this degree apart from
others.

Studying gender at Hull has
been an amazing experience that
I would strongly recommend.
Throughout the course I have
encountered many fascinating
modules which I have constantly
applied to the other aspects of
my degree.The department has a
very strong lecturing team who
show great passion, and this
really helped me to get involved
in my studies. Originally when I
was choosing where to study I
noticed that Gender Studies at
Hull has an exchange scheme
with a Dutch university.As
something that few universities
offer, this captured my attention
and was one of my main reasons
for choosing Hull.Three years
later I found myself studying at
Utrecht University for five
months.This was an
unbelievably fantastic experience
which really opened my mind to
other lifestyles and cultures, and
is something I would choose to
do again in a heartbeat.
