LEV1 SMITH

Does anyone have knowledge of the family of one LEV1 SMITH, who narrowly escaped being hanged as a Tory during the Revolutionary War in South Carolina? According to early family letters, he was a brother to my g-g-g- grandfather JOHN SMITH of the upper Richlandllower Fairfield area. Tracing this JOHN SMITH has proved a fruitless endeavor. Perhaps pursuing LEV1 may be more productive. Loyalists of the American Revolution says of LEV1 "Of South Carolina. A native of America. At beginning of the Revolution, Levi was living in the Camden District of South Carolina, where he was a planter and kept a store. He had 850 acres, 120 cultivated. He served as a guide for the British army, and on May 8, 1781, he was taken prisoner, possibly for giving intelligence information to Lord Rawdon. He was about to be hanged, according to Colonel Nisbet Balfour, but was rescued while his would be executors were waiting for a rope. LEV1 went to Charleston, then moved to East Florida at the evacuation of Charleston in 1782, and in 1788 returned to Savannah; later, he sailed for England, "but he intended to go eventually to New Providence," according to the British records. SMITH estimated his loss at 3,550 sterling (British pounds), and received 1,358 sterling (BP). Will gladly reimburse postage and copying costs for information on this SMITH family. SCREVEN I MOBLEY

While doing research in the Laurens County Library recently, I ran across an article in your Vol. #8, #4 dated December 1995, Excerpts from a letter written by Milton Mobley to Bob Blair in 1994 for the Coleman-Feaster-Mobley Family Association.

My deceased husband, William James Baker was descended from: W~lliam James Screven who manied Ellen Mobley of Fairfield County, SC. They lived in Tryon, NC. when I tried the Internet address in the article, [email protected], it was no longer accessible. If you could help me locate the people listed above, I would really appreciate it. Contact: Kathalyn G. Baker, 235 James Street, Laurens, SC 29360

SMITHWICK

A William Smithwick is listed in the 1790 census for South Carolina living in Camden District, Fairfield County. I am trying to ascertain if he could be the father of William Willis Smithwick who was involved in numerous land transactions in Spartenburg County in the 1820's. William Willis Smihwick eventually moved to Georgia where he died in Cherokee County around 1845. Any information will be appreciated.

HANCOCK

HANCOCK, JAMES, born 1789, S.C. (Where)? A deed dated 1808 in Chester District stated "late of Fairfield" makes me think he was probably born in Fairfield since he was only 19 years of age in 1808. James Hancock manied Sarah Scaife, probably in Chester District. Need to know identity of his parents and siblings, and where he was born. Will appreciate any information about this Hancock family and will answer all correspondence, trade anything I have, and pay postage and copy expenses. Contact: Mrs. Blanche Hancock Turlington, 11 55 Hancock Road, Crossett, Arkansas 71635. Telephone (870) 364-8589.

MONTGOMERY

I am trying to determine the identity of my great grandfather whom I believe to have been from your area of SC. He was killed in the Civil War leaving a widow and my grandfather (John Clarence Montgomery, b. June 30, 1860-SC, d. Oct. 30, 1927-TX) as a small child. There may have been some older children (I believe he had at least one brother), but his widow did not feel she could care for her small son so she left him with someone (?? relative, friend or stranger???) to raise. He was probably raised in Lancaster County, SC.

I am in hopes someone there may have the information I need to discover the identiy of my great grandfather. Contact: Sandra Sachtleben, Rt. 3, Box 386

Dear Ladies andlor Gentlemen,

Several of us are researching our common ancestor, JOHNSON CALHOUN HUNTER. We are interested in determing his parent's names at this time and any information concerning them and then being able to connect to any known ancestors and descendants. We know he was born on May 22,1787, in.Charleston , South Carolina, and was married to Mary Martha Harbert of Wythe County, Virginia, on November 10, 1809. She was born August 29,1792, in Lead Mines, Virginia. From books in the Texas Archives we have clues stating that he was of Irish descent, his parents were wealthy , and were related to John C. Calhoun. While none of this is as yet prwen kt it is given here as clues to who his parents were. We also know he received a degree in medicine at the age of eighteen. In hopes of linking to our Hunter past we here include that Ms. Harbert was related to frontiersman Davy Crockett. For reasons unknown to us at this time Mr. Hunter used the name of JOHN HUNTW while in Circleville, Ohio, and New Madrid, Missouri, and one ofus has found it is possl%le tbat his given could have been CALHOUN HUNTER While we have much information on Mr. Hunter after leaving South Carolina, we have almost nothing of his time in that State and the above clues are all we have on his parents. Following are the names of his thirteen children but we think all but Jacob was born after leaving South Carolina and while living in Circleville, Ohio, New Madrid, Missod, md Fort Bend County, Texas.

Jacob Hunter born March 6, 181 1,died September 15, 181 1 Robert Hanaxk Hunter born May 1,1813, died August 1 1, 1902 Mary Hunter born April 1, 1815, died October 1, 18 16 John Calhoun Hunter born May 5, 18 17, died September 3, 1844 Harriet Harbert Hunter born November 15, 1818, died May 29, 1859 Thomas Johnson Hunter born March 7, 1821, died March 30, 1900 Thaddeus Warsaw Hunter born September 29, 1823, died September 25, 1901 Messina Hunter born September 30,1823, died February 26, 1853 Martha Hunter born December 21, 1825 Letitia Hunter born July 28, 1828, died July 7, 183 1 William Hunter born July 13, 1830, died March 25, 1907 Amanda Wilson Hunter born Nmmber 2 1, 1833 Walter Crockett Hunter born September 21, 1836, died April , 1884

Mr. Hunter was a school teacher in Ohio, a merchant in Missouri, and became one of Stephen F. Austin's "Old Three Hundred" Colonists after Mr. Austin arrived in Texas. Please advise if you or another organization you may know of can be of any assistance in our finding Mr. Hunter's parents. Thank you very much for your time and help.

Sincerely,

Terry L. Frierson 1459 Hawea Court Bastrop, Texas 78602

What Wlll Become of My Research?

The fobwing was printed by the Southern California Society News, Vd. 32, No. 2 and reprinted in Clark County NV Gen. Sot. News, Vol. 17, No. 4 of Od. 1997. It is w* reprinting here for everyone's beneft.

Most genealogists worry about their lifetime research being sent to the basement or attic or even worse, the trash can after their death! I often wonder if the missing piece of my puzzle is in a b x of a relative's earlier research in a basement somewhere. I have names of researchers in my family who did genealogy 50 to 100 years ago but finding those documents is another story! I also have the family legend that when Uncle Edward died without children, the German trunk filled with old German papers and the family Bibte were thrown away by his spous0.

Have a short paragraph added to your will, leaving no doubt as to your wishes regarding both yuur personal library and the product of your research, the family histories you compiled, but did not publish. The following paragraph is an example you can use.

------Id-----CII-I--------------------------------------h-------b------+- --c--------------c-----ll---------------------------------------------------

I direct my executor to box the following genealogical publications and compilations for the donation to the (name of your favorite genealogical chapter) for the appropriate disposition and retention by the society for the benefi of family genealogists.

( ) A l family materials of which I possessed. ( ) Only my library of printed reference books and materials. ( ) The unpublished family history manuscript materials on which I was working. ( 1 others (specrfy)

The addresa of my intended redpient is:

Signature Date Witness Witness

(This may also be left to a family member or other historical LibrarylAssociations. Be sure to let the recipient or library know of your request and give them a copy.)
