MARTIN - HOLLIS - KNIGHTON

i arii i ~ i ~ h i f i g i i iy iviaitiii and i-iiiiiis hniiiies. I am almost convinced my great grandmother was bom a HOLLIS and raised as a KNIGHTON since she and all siblings carried HOLLIS as a middle name. Do you have any marriages of the HOLLIS and KNIGKTONS? The clans h e w each other in VA, moving to SC, to same area. Where could I find any marriage information? Are there any books on early Fairfield Settlers?

For approximately 10 years (on at least work of mouth information), I was lead to believe MOSES KNIGHTON was my blood ancestor. Since then, information (papers from archive) has put that theory on hold. In 1830, one LYDIA HOLLIS had 4 or 5 children listed in census (as widow). A JOHN HOLLIS had a wife (woman) by name LYDIA. When did John die? A LYDIA (?) came to Randolph, Co., Georgia in early 1840 with MOSES KNIGHTON. Did they marry between 18301401

All the children Moses canied to Georgia had HOLLIS as middle names. The ages in 1 840 census coincide with children had in 1830 census. Who was their Dad? Since I first heard, Moses was the Dad, in 1839 1 had erroneously spread untruth unintentionally. Now I MUST correct as soon as I find the truth. Contact: W.F. Martin, P.O. QUAKERS IN SOUTH CAROLINA

Quakers have been in South Carolina since the late 1600s. About two-thirds of the Quakers were located in the Carolina Piedmont region during the period from 1750 to 1820. In 1801 most Friends began to leave for the Midwest because of their opposition to slavery.

Many of their membership which did not leave the South joined the Baptists and the Methodists which were enjoying a swell in membership during this same period. Many of their descendants do not have any idea that these families had roots in the Quaker movement.

More complete genealogical data on Quaker families may be found in Hinshaw's Quaker Genealogy (North Carolina volume) or in William F. Medlin's Quaker Families of South Carolina and Georgia.

Some of the names with connections to Fairfield County that had Quaker connections are:

Adamson Hawkins Stark Anderson Hendrix Taylor Babb Herbert Thomas Bagnal Henderson Thompson Bartlam Hickman Tomlinson Be1 ton Hollingswor th Vaughan Blair Inman Weeks Bond Jenkins Whitaker Bridges Jones Wright Brooks Kelly WY~Y Broom Kerr Bull Lamb Cammack Martin Campbell Mathis Cain Mickle Caton Minton Champion Moor/Moore Chapman Moorman Cloud Morgan Compton McCool Colle y McClure Cook McDonald Davis Neil Day Norris Dixon Nutt Downs O'Neal Edwards Pearson Elliott Pidgeon Embree Ross Evans Sanders Frazier /Frasier Smith

MEMORIES

Today an era ended - the third generation of youngsters now grown and with youngsters of its own witnessed the passing! For the last time the door was closed; the key was turned; the dishes had been packed away; the family treasures distributed. For the last time the dust was swept into a neat pile and all that remained were memories, tales twice told of a long ago time. The paper plate generation had replaced the 'best china and silver every Sunday' generation. The hats and gloves period has moved into the pants suit and sandals period. Straw fans waving in the sun parlor have been supplanted by the roaring monster air conditioner.

The quiet talk of myriad cousins has been drowned by twentieth century television. The smell of homemade rolls and handchurned butter has given way to canned biscuits and tasteless margarine. The call of 'Bob White' in the early dawn is heard no more because of encroaching homesites.

Memories slip by: of three generations coming home, the older ones to see Mamma and Papa in their sunset years while the homeplace was still a farm with wood to be cut, chickens to be fed, cows to be milked, gardens tended. Summer was the time to bring youngsters for a visit, to help with the canning and the eating - the ploying and the playing, under the trees, in the trees, in the barn lot, and along the river bank.

Then one day the older ones were gone, the unmarried ones now called the old house, home. Now the children who had come in years before - come still - but with their children, to frolic on the lawn, to watch the cows, to taste chocolate milk that had no equal, to marvel at the strange transformation of milk to curd - or cottage cheese as the city cousins called it - and to listen and in listening to realize that their forebears abided by certain rules, rules of etiquette, rules of morality, rules or standards that were to be abided by all who called this family, family. Oh, mavericks there were, but still there was pride in a heritage.

Time passed; fewer visits, fewer kissing cousins, all the older ones more and more feeble. For them, like the house, time was passing by - but still the memories! Do houses have souls? If so - this one has a good one and new tenants will feel it so. New tenants will have a feeling of peace and quiet; and if the newcomers will but listen, they will hear happy sounds, a fish splash, a Bob White call, a cicada's drone; and if they will but listen there will be an echo of laughter, and maybe just maybe, in some forgotten comer, will be just a bit of the aroma of home baked bread and home churned butter.

An era ended - a new one begins!

Castle Fraser Castle Fraser in Alberdeenshire. considered by

many to be the most spectacular castle in a n area famed for i t s castles. was opened to the public last year.

The President of the National Trust for Scot- land, the Ear l of Wemyss & March. paid tribute to the generosity of i ts former owners. Major and Mrs. Michael Smiley for "the immensely gen- e rous gift to the ,na t ion which they have made through the Trust in the shape of this magnificent building and the munificent endowment which they have given with it".

At the s a m e time. they entered into a conser- vation agreement to secure for a l l time the ameni- t ies of the surroundings of the castle. In addition: Mrs. Smiley added a personal gift- the redeco- ration of the dining room.

Acceptanceof thecastle was facilitated by finan- c ia l ass is tance from the Scottish Tourist Board. with g ran t s towards the cost of capital works nec- essary to adapt the building to i ts new role. and the establ ishment of a n exhibition telling the story of the 'Castles of Mar' from Norman times.

Castle Fraser was begun about 1575 and took . nearly thir ty years to complete. and was lived in by the Fraser family until 1921.

In that year it was sold with ~ t s contents to Viscount Cowdray: his secund son. The Hon. Clive Parson, father of Mrs. Smiley. did much towards i t s restoration. Of late yea r s only the two low wings have been inhabited. but the main block has been maintained in excellent condition. Major and Mrs. Smiley will continue t o live in the home they have created in the Establishment Stables.

New Books from

HEWTABE BOOKS, INC.

Cartwrights of the Southern United States - Connie Cartwright Kwasha. Genealogies are always enhanced by thorough documentation, scholarly research, well-orgfnized information, lucid writing and creative speculation, but rarely does one find all of these qualities tied up in one package. Ms. Kwasha's outstanding new book would certainly qualify as one of the valuable exceptions.

Providing a wide overview of t b e Cartwrights who were present in the areas of Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina and Tennessee during the early years of North American colonization, Ms. Kwasha has divided this book into Wo parts. The h t deals with the Carhvrights of Maryland as descended from Matthew Cartwright, born c.1634 in Holland. The second deals with the Cartwrights of Princess Anne County, VA, and Pasquotank County, NC, as descended fiom John Cartwright, born c. 1600. Both lines are followed to seven generations.

Each part begins with a genealogical outline, which serves the reader as a point of reference for individuals covered in later chapters. Many relevant do cum en)^ and records, including several wills never before published, have been transcribed. Among these records, as elsewhere throughout the text, Ms. Kwasha adds her own parenthetical

observations about the significance or implications of the information being recorded. Drawing from many varied sources, the authorys careful analysis has eliminated many errors &om works of previous researchers, and the result is a more comprehensive single volume of Cartwright genealogy than is available elsewhere. This broad, easy to read compilation of data should be an enormous help to anyone who is interested in the vast maze of Cartwrights or their allied lines, such as Albertson, Burroughs, Davidson, Jones, Rogers and Tippett. End-of-chapter bibliographies and an everyname index are included. 1996,293 pp., bibl., index, paper, $25.50 #KO67
