IN THE WEEK AFTER THE TORIESsignalled more cuts packages thatwill savage our welfare state, jobs
and pay, we were reminded of how the
other half live.Tory Baroness Jenkin, who is on the
House of Lords committee that spent£260,000 on champagne, had the cheekto blame the rise of foodbanks on poor
people’s inability to cook.Meanwhile millions have seen cuts to
their hospitals and services, as benetsand jobs are slashed and pay freezes or
pay cuts imposed. You couldn’t make it up. And for
many, this outrageous hypocrisy from the baroness sums up a political elite who arecompletely disconnected from the reality
of austerity Britain for the rest of us.After four years of brutal Tory austerity, and Labour failing to offer an alternative, the question of how to stop the assault onworkers is posed sharply as the generalelection looms.
BlameRacist UKip are feeding off of people’sdespair by scapegoating migrants andseeking to divide working class peoplethrough racism.
Let’s be clear―it’s not migrant workerswho are to blame for the economic crisis,
it’s the bankers who were bailed out, andthe rich who are avoiding their tax andcontinuing to get richer while we’re madeto pay.
Don’t believe UKip’s lies. They havetried to pose as an alternative to themainstream, with Nigel Farage presentinghimself as a real man of the people.
It couldn’t be further from the truth―the man is a banker who was privatelyeducated at the elite Dulwich College.
UKip masquerades as a party thatrepresents working people.
The reality is that they represent a break
from the Tories, and think working class people aren’t being attacked hard enough by this coalition.
UKip wants to privatise the NHS, andhas thoroughly sexist and homophobic
policies.
We cannot allow workers to be divided by racism and the blame game. Insteadlet’s make the rich pay. United, we canstand together to oppose austerity andght for jobs, homes, services and a £10minimum wage now for everyone.
PowerWhen action has been called by unionleaders to stand up to austerity, workershave responded magnicently.
Our unions have the power to mobilisea serious ght that can force an end toausterity.
That’s why it is a shame that someunion leaders, for example in localgovernment, have pulled back from actionfor lousy deals.
Lords spend £260,000 on champagne and blame poor for rise in foodbanks!
“We rescue people, not banks”
say striking reghters
We cannot simply wait to elect a Labourgovernment. Ed Miliband has madeclear that Labour will continue with Toryspending cuts and pay insults.
Striking reghters and NHS workers, and local disputes―such as the currentstrikes by DSG Unite defence workerswho are ghting over pay and UCULambeth College lecturers challengingimposed contracts―are leading the way.
DemandsWe need to organise inside our unions fordemands for the general election that can, whatever government we get, improveworking class people’s lives.
But it’s clear that our unions have to be prepared to ght to make this happen.
