Longwood University President Dr. Patricia P. The subcommittee also advanced the institution's men'sgolf and women's lacrosse programs into the second year of the multidivisional process.

During 2005-06, Longwood continued to comply with all Division I legislation and satisfied the following require-ments: attendance at the NCAA Convention by the chief executive officer, the director of athletics, the senior womanadministrator, the faculty athletics representative, and the compliance coordinator; attendance (by the same represen-tatives) at a meeting conducted at the NCAA Convention to discuss issues impacting Division I members; completionof an NCAA athletics certification orientation; completion of a compliance review conducted by the national office andsubmission of a report with an institutional response to the findings; and submission of an annual report and updatedstrategic plan by June 1, 2006 based on feedback received from the previous year's annual report.

Presently, Longwood has a combinedundergraduate and graduate enrollment of 4,350 and best of all, and intercollegiateathletics program on the cusp of NCAA Division I Certification.

Longwood University Unveils New Athletics Logo February 18, 2006Courtesy the office of Public Relations, a division of University Advancement

The need for a new logo was driven by several important factors. First of all, as Longwood University moves toward the final yearof its reclassification to NCAA Division I, it is critical that a new logo project a positive image with a flexible concept that is adaptableto both print and electronic media formats. Positioning of Longwood’s athletic teams is a critical element in a new integrated market-ing plan developed by Longwood’s marketing partner, Carter Ryley Thomas/Tanaka Public Relations and Marketing Counsel.

Research conducted by CRT/tanaka over the summer of 2005 indicated that the then existing logo, depicting a knight in armorriding a horse with the legend, “Lancers” was neither popular nor effective. More important, the logo was not even historically accu-rate. Additional research indicated that the Longwood Lancers’ mascot, “Lance” was not well accepted by students, faculty, or staff.

The research revealed also that Longwood’s existing depiction of a medieval “jousting” knight in armor was not historically accu-rate. The designation of “Lancers” is more accurately linked to the British cavalry of the 18th and 19th centuries, i.e., the Queen’sOwn Lancers, a regiment that continues today with tanks taking the place of horses.

The new logo for the Longwood Lancers was created by Longwood graphic design students in collaboration with the design teamof CRT/tanaka. The team effort began during the fall semester when Chris Register, associate professor of art and Chair of the Artdepartment, selected three teams of students from his graphic design classes and assigned them the creative challenge of develop-ing a new team logo for the Lancers. Over the fall semester, Al Davis, CRT’s vice president for creative services, met with the stu-dents and helped them narrow down the initial 20 logo concepts to a final three for submission to the athletics department and admin-istration.

The student creative team included Rachel Battleson, Jacob Krekorkian, Thomas Santerre, Emily Wilson, Tim Owens, CristaHaebler, Leslie Quenneville, Michael Maslaney and Brooke Hill. Before starting work, the students were given a brief historical per-spective on the Longwood Lancers and the symbolism of Lancers.

The final design selected for submission to the athletics staff and Longwood President PatriciaCormier features the words “Longwood University Lancers” along with the profile of a horse and alance with pennant unfurling over the horse’s mane.

The new logo meets the challenge that faced the design team: it is simple, yet forceful. Thehorse profile conveys both action and forward movement with a hint of aggression. The typogra-phy for Longwood University Lancers complements the overall design. The logo will also meet allpromotional criteria and will be easily reproducible in a variety of merchandising formats: silkscreening, embroidery, transfers, etc... The development of the new Lancer logo is a perfectexample of how Longwood students learn by doing…how “hands-on” experience can give them aleg up in the job market.
