Genetic Services Cancer genetics is the study of hereditary and familial cancer. Though most cancers occur by chance, cancer develops in some individuals as the result of a genetic predisposition that runs in their family.

There are many known genes that may predispose individuals to inherited forms of cancer. By identifying inherited cancer syndromes, at-risk individuals and their health care providers can implement targeted, individualized lifestyle modifications, screening recommendations, and preventative or therapeutic treatment options to improve outcomes.

In continuing with CaroMont Health’s multidisciplinary cancer care, Genetic Services provides individualized cancer risk assessment, genetic counseling, and testing to patients and their families.

What is Genetic Counseling?Genetic counseling helps individuals and families understand and adapt to the medical, psychological and familial implications of genetic contributions to disease. This process integrates family and medical history interpretation with education about inheritance, testing, management, prevention, resources and research.

Genetic counseling is used to identify individuals and families at increased risk of cancer to promote awareness, early detection and cancer prevention, as well as for those already diagnosed with

cancer to guide treatment and follow-up options. Our genetic counselor will help determine if genetic testing is right for you.Genetic counseling can also be useful for those who may not wish to seek genetic testing. Valuable information about cancer risk management can be gathered. Individuals considering genetic testing should carefully weigh timing, risks, benefits and limitations.

What is Genetic Testing?Genetic tests are laboratory tests performed on blood, saliva and other tissues to detect genetic disorders. The demand for genetic testing is increasing as the role of genetics grows more prevalent and complex every day.

By identifying inherited cancer risk through genetic testing, patients and their health care providers can create a plan of care that considers and addresses their risk factors.

What happens during genetic counseling for cancer risk?

▪ Medical history will be reviewed ▪ Family history will be reviewed ▪ Inherited cancer risk will be identified ▪ Genetic information of cancer predisposition will be shared ▪ Options for cancer screening and risk reduction will be discussed ▪ We will recommend, conduct and review genetic tests, if applicable

Financial InformationThere is no charge for genetic counseling services, however genetic testing charges will be determined by the test and individual insurance coverage.

CaroMont Health’s Masters-prepared genetic counselor stays current on trends in genetic science and is equipped with the tools and expertise to identify and select the most appropriate genetic tests. The counselor also tailors, translates and communicates test results into practical, understandable information that can be used to guide health care decisions.
