OVC Care in Africa

The number of OVC (orphans and vulnerable children) in Africa is steadily increasing due to the AIDS epidemic.

The extended family is the traditional support system for AIDS orphans, though is losing capacity to care for many children.

Orphans are more exposed to abuse, neglect, and exploitation than non-orphans; they are denied access to services such as education and health care.

Institutionalization is not sustainable and leads to psychological damage of the OVC.

OVC Care Duties

Research basic information of data on AIDS orphans in Sub-Saharan Africa, where AIDS is most prevalent.

Read reports of effects on orphans and vulnerable children due to AIDS and other sources of hardships.

Research effective interventions to address OVC issues.

Help choose countries to focus on for an upcoming project and obtain specific information for each country.

Help to start drafting the proposal and formation of the project.

TME DVD Pilot Program

As part of outreach to corporations, GG got a contract with TME to do a pilot program of educational DVDs to mass produce and present to poor communities and countries worldwide.

Topics were HIV/AIDS, HIV Testing, Basic Hygiene and Safe Water.

Conducted pilot program in selected communities and had participants fill out questionnaires to evaluate effectiveness for a written report for TME, which will then start a project for educational outreach in life skills to developing countries.

TME Duties

Hundreds of questionnaires from various countries came in to GG and I inputted data from each questionnaire into an Excel spreadsheet.

At the end of August, I started to do analysis of the responses: Mean, median, and mode of each

numerical-based question Five most common responses for open-

ended questions

Various Other Projects

Researched speed schools and alternative education as a project to get street kids in Ethiopia back to school with accelerated education to make up for lost years of schooling when they could not attend for various reasons.

Made an Excel spreadsheet showing the extent of NTDs in each African country and what organizations are working on each disease for a new contract with USAID.

What I Learned

Educational experience to see what types of projects are effective and what preparation there is for planning an effective and sustainable program.

Learned about OVC care and other examples of specific projects and issues to address worldwide.

What I Learned, Continued

How to work in a small business that has limited staff but many responsibilities. Everyone pitched in with everything in addition to their hired roles and I was part of that system, particularly with preliminary research for new projects.

How to channel donor money into effective solutions concentrated in community organizations overseas and the importance of monitoring and evaluation of each project that is invested in.
