Genre Market analysis

Market share by genreThe share of the film market by genre appears to favour the action genre quite a lotwith it being second to the adventure genre. This means therefore that’s it’s heavily in demand and that big production companies will care much for it and try their best to have the market share.

Best performing action filmsOut of the top 10 performing action films, most of them surround the sub-genre of superhero and fantasy movies. As these movies conventionally are a marvel in its appearance and visual effects, this film would not be our viable for us to achieve the standards that they create. Therefore, I will be looking at the films ‘The Equaliser’ and ‘Lucy’ which are the films that relate most to our initial pitch which involved the sub-genres of thriller and crime. Both of these films were distributed by large conglomerates and have a restricted 15/18 rating.

Market share by production companies

The film market is overall dominated by the large 6 conglomerates meaning they also take up a large portion of the action genre as it’s a popular genre demanded by a mass global audience. One of the largest conglomerate that takes a large share in the action genre is Disney/Buena Vista. These companies who work in conjunction with each other own the marvel film franchise which therefore means they produce highly successful and impressive films using these well established brands. Action films rely heavily on expensive visual effects meaning that only these large conglomerate can fund them. However, this does not mean that these sceptical like films are the only success stories, there are other films in 2014 such as Lucy that combat this trend.

Lucy

Lucy’s AudienceAs this film is rated 15 in the UK, this means that this film is targeted at a more mature audience looking for a more hard hitting story line. The audience would be people who like action films and sequences, but also like the fantasy and otherworldly events from sci-fi films mixed in, which would promote a diverse audience. As it has a female protagonist, this potentially might make the target audience be more female oriented, but as the genres featured in this film have an more male demographic, this would mean that an a more universal audience in terms of gender was targeted.

Lucy’s SuccessLucy was released in 2014 and combined elements of Sci-fi and thriller to create a more unique film. This however was not the first combination of these genres making it similar to other successful action films in their bracket. Critics state it has too much similarities to films such as limitless showing that it wasn’t original enough to gain a critical successful but rather only a finical success. However, even with a lower budget it still could contend with other action films produced by large conglomerates. Lucy was produced by Canal, which is an independent French company showing that these films are not exclusive to the big 6. however, even with these criticism’s and disadvantage of not being produced by a conglomerate, it was successful as the audience still demand this concept and idea.

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes’ audience

This film was given a 12a in the UK meaning that this film could both appeal to adults, teenagers and some older children which around the age of 10 and 11. This age rating is received for quite a lot of blockbuster action films as this could generate the largest audience in terms of range meaning that they could make the most amount of money possible which is usually the objective of blockbuster films. This film will also generate a more male audience as it’s an action film but because it centres around the fight between apes and humans, a more gender neutral audience would be gained as the topic is not gender specific.

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes’ Success

This film is based on a well established brand and film series, making it instantly recognisable for the audience. Sequels are generally a safe bet for film studio’s as they know that it will be watched by a previously established fan base. This almost guaranteed its success, but it was also made by Fox, a large conglomerate which can provide the funding needed to make a sceptical of a film which would appeal to people looking for an exciting and impressive films.

Non-Stop

Non-Stop’s audienceThis film is also a 12a which makes the audience be quite broad in terms of age. This film is also a thriller meaning that this could gain more of an audience out side of the action part for people looking for a tense and exciting experience. This film also creates verisimilitude by being set in a plane meaning an audience would be gained from people who can relate to the situation are more prone to watch it.

Non-Stop’s SuccessThis film only really focusing around one location makes it quite unique meaning that that this was more likely to be successful. It also features Liam Neeson playing the main role and this well respected Hollywood actor would gain more of an audience and be more successful. This film is conventional for its genre whilst also containing some unique elements which led to its success. This follows Neale’s theory of repetition in difference as this was done in this film and it was successful because of it.

ConclusionOverall I can understand that the Marketing of a film with its relation to the films genre can help make it more successful if done correctly. Films which follow genres and conventions, appeal to an broad enough audience but contain some unique elements are more likely to be successful. Because of this, I will try to achieve this equilibrium within my own production so it’s more likely to be a successful teaser trailer.
