INTRODUCTION

All the wealth that toils is meant to serve those who deserve. (Thirukkural 212)

There are people in and around us with kind and good heart willing to do their social responsibility. Main task involved is to gather and organize them.

Geo-friends is a group formed by students in the year 2007. Currently, students who have turned into employee, their friends and ofcourse present students are members of this group. The main motto of this group is to enhance the effective usage of the facility available in the society. The group has done seven projects so far, which includes the current project also.

As deep you dig the sand spring flows: As deep you learn the knowledge grows. (Thirukkural 396)

“The best property a child possess is the book”

With above said words, the current project is chosen inorder to trigger the habit of learning and it is one of the best-way for self-development.

ABOUT THE HOME

The home is selected, where the reading habit is appreciated. The home selected is “UDHAVUM ULLANGAL (HELPING HEARTS HOME)” (no. 9, west karikalan ii street, adambakkam, chennai - 600 088, tamil nadu, india. phone: 91-44-22672236 / 22673338.)

UDHAVUM ULLANGAL is a home for children and aged people. The home was inaugurated by Smt. Indrani Rajadurai (Joint Director, Helpage India) and Shri. Das (Programme Executive) in June 2001. At present the home is run by retired government officials and other kind hearted persons. This home has helpless inmates (children and elders) and the home for elders is in Marimalai Nagar. There is an extension for this home in MM nagar. The children of this home are received from child line, social worker, NGO’c etc. Most of the children are orphans and few children are rescued from road side, parks, railway stations etc.

The children are put in the nearby Govt. School. The building in which they reside is given as

lease to the home for free by the house owner. The donations for this home are tax exempted under the section 80G of Income Tax act and

FCRA approval is also available. In present there are about 57 students and it is the listed below,

BOOKS

The books was bought in a ratio of 1:3 (student:books). The list of book is given in the Annexure 1. The books were brought under the category religion, motivation book, stories (Tamil and English), health, biographies (Tamil and English), general knowledge (Tamil and English) and general books (dictionaries and atlas). The books also include some non-reusable books like hand writing book (Tamil and English) and drawing books.

A catalogue was made with the entire details of the books and given to the management for effective management of books.

WORK EXECUTION

The problem faced in the previous project is taken as reference while scheduling the project and well planned. The project commences on August 1st 2012 and completed on 15th August2012.

Funds:

The amount was collected till the last date of the project.

Books:

The preferred books were categorized suiting the entire children. Most of the books were of newly brought books. To ensure the maintenance of books, the books were labeled.

Cupboards:

The cupboard made of MS steel was bought and placed in home on August 5th 2012.

Function:

All our members planned to attend the function. Snacks were brought and distributed among the kids.

It was planned to tell the importance of reading, due to importance of that day we couldn’t make it.

BUDGET

The total amount collected is Rs. 23,300.

Out of 213 book purchased, five are second books and rest are new books. The second handed books were protected by binding.

The amount spent for the purchase of Cupboard is Rs.1200 and the transportation costed Rs.200. It was purchased in Porur and transported to the home on August 5th 2012.

In inaugural function the snacks for children and members was sponsored by Mr.N.Suriyanarayanan.

A memento was given to the management by Prof.V.Shanmugasundaram.

INAUGURAL FUNCTION

The inaugural function is planned on 15th August, 2012 with all our members participating in this opening function. Prof. V.Shanmugaasundaram opened the library. The function was scheduled between 3pm to 5 pm, as assembling of the shelf took us time we could able to inaugurated the function by 5.30pm. The sweets were distributed among the children friends.

The books collected are contributed with immense eternal happiness the library was handed over to the children. This moment of accomplishment and happiness will be in our memory for ever to cherish. With this inspiration we will are willing to take our dream of continuing our service to mankind forth.

PROBLEMS FACED AND SOLUTIONS

We faced some problems during the execution of the project and arrived at some optimal solutions. They are discussed below.

Initially the authority has promised to assemble the shelf and it was not done on-time, hence our team members start assembling by 3 pm and extended to 5.30pm. With great team effort it was solved.

REVIEW OF THE PROJECT

Inorder to ensure the effectiveness of this project, the group members (S.Ganesh Kumar and Sivapriya S V) visited the home on 18th August 2012. The management has already made a ledger for taking the books. The students were given book once in a week and they have to renew or take another book after one week.

CONCLUSION

Atlast we have rejuvenate our group, by conducting this activity. Thanks to all good hearts who have taken part in this activity.
