1.0 Summary

The Red Lake property consists of 14 contiguous unpatented mining claims consisting of 174 units primarily located in Fairlie Township extending south into Baird and west into Todd Townships in the Red Lake Mining Division, District of Kenora, Ontario.

During August 1997, preliminary field work was conducted on select portions of the property considered to have the highest potential for hosting gold mineralization. Systematic mapping, rock sampling and re-establishing of old grid lines for geologic control were concentrated in the vicinity of the Pipestone Bay - St. Paul's Bay and Post Narrows deformation zones as defined by Andrews et al. (1986). A total of 132 samples were taken and assyed for gold and multiple elements. Of these, 106 were analyzed for lithogeochemistry.

Mapping outlined relatively unaltered barren mafic volcanics containing variably weak to pervasive carbonate alteration. A weak to moderate foliation fabric trends roughly east-west to slightly southeast-northwest. Minor irregular discontinuous quartz veins occur across the mapped area. Localized highly sheared rock containing Fe-carbonate veins outcrops sporadically throughout the property.

Low values of gold as well as As, Zn, Cu, Hg, Sb and Pb were returned from the rock analyses. Major oxide results reflect a low intensity of hydrothermal alteration.

Characteristics associated with known gold deposits in the Red Lake camp have not been observed on the property in the areas considered to have the greatest potential for hosting gold mineralization. Based on previous work and the results of the present mapping and sampling program, the economic potential of the property at depth is undetermined.

2.0 Location and Access

The Red Lake property is located in the Red Lake greenstone belt in the west half of the Uchi Subprovince in the Superior Province of the Canadian Shield (Fig. 1). The center of the property is located approximately eight kilometers west of the town of Red Lake, Ontario and covers portions of central Red Lake extending from the south shore of Red Lake north across the Fisher Islands and Martin Bay to south of Hammell Lake. The southern and central parts of the property can be accessed from the town of Red Lake by boat along Red Lake. The property north of Martin Bay can be accessed from town by the Mount Jamie Mine Road via the Pine Ridge and Nungesser logging roads.

4.0 Regional Geology

The Red Lake greenstone belt consists of an approximately 48 km. by up to 25 km. wide band of Archean metavolcanic and metasedimentary rocks surrounded by late Archean granitoid intrusions (Fig. 3).

Five assemblages have been defined in the Red Lake greenstone belt based on U- Pb zircon dating of volcanic units (Stott and Corfu, 1991). The 2992-2964 Ma Balmer assemblage is composed predominantly of basaltic tholeiite and komatiite flows with minor mafic to ultramafic intrusions, chemical sediments and felsic volcanics. The Ball assemblage is a dominantly calc-alkalic sequence of mafic volcanic flows, intermediate to felsic flows and tuffs dated at 2940-2925 Ma. The Bruce Channel assemblage consists of basaltic flows with minor felsic pyroclastic units (which returned an age date of 2894 Ma), clastic sedimentary rocks and iron formation. The felsic to intermediate pyroclastic rocks of the Woman assemblage with a single age date of 2830 Ma outcrops on MacKenzie Island in the east part of Red Lake however the relationship to other assemblages is unknown. The 2748-2733 Ma Confederation assemblage consists of interbedded felsic, intermediate and mafic flows, tuff and tuff breccia. The belt is surrounded by granitoid batholiths and stocks that have returned 2840-2806 Ma age dates. Metamorphic grade varies from greenschist in the center of the belt to amphibolite near the contact adjacent to the intrusions. The dominant regional structural fabric is a pervasive foliation that trends generally parallel to lithologies as well as the contacts of the surrounding batholiths.

Andrews et al (1986) have defined linear zones of high strain forming conjugate northwest and southwest trending deformation zones. These deformation zones consist of discrete and closely spaced shear zones separated by narrow domains of relatively undeformed rocks (Durocher and Burchell, 1983). These heterogeneous shear zones are l to 3 km in width, 10's of kms in strike length and are usually parallel or subparallel to the volcanic stratigraphy. Two of these deformation zones have been outlined crossing the property. The Pipestone Bay - St. Paul Bay deformation zone trends northwest from St. Paul Bay on the southeast side of Red Lake through the center of the property and continues north of Martin Bay. The Post Narrows deformation zone trends southwest and intersects the Pipestone Bay - St. Paul Bay deformation zone west of the Dome stock on the east side of the property (Fig. 4).

All of the volcanic-hosted past and present producing mines in the eastern section of the Red Lake greenstone belt appear to be structurally controlled and occur closely associated with highly altered rocks (Andrews, 1983). Alteration is characterized by Fe- carbonatization, silicification and sericitization. Mineralized areas are associated with broad haloes of moderate but pervasive silicification. Intense brecciation and silica flooding characterize rocks in the vicinity of ore zones accompanied by abundant quartz and Fe-dolomite veins. Silicified basalts exhibit strong depletions in CaO, Na2O and MgO whereas carbonatized basalts have slight to moderate depletions of CaO. Within and immediately adjacent to zones of high strain, carbonatization appears widespread while biotite, sericite and chlorite are more localized. Biotite occurs as an important secondary

phase on the McFinley Property and in the Campbell and Goldcorp (formerly A. W. White) Mines. Chlorite, sericite and carbonate are more significant in the area of the Cochenour, Wilmar and McMarmac Mines (Fig 4). Gold often associated with arsenopyrite occurs in the intensely silicified areas and as higher grade zones within the veins.

Several small gold deposits occur northwest of the property. The gold deposits of the Lake Rowan and Mount Jamie Mines are located in quartz veins in highly altered and deformed rocks.

Gold mineralization occurs west of Martin Bay in sheared and altered mafic volcanic rocks, narrow quartz veins and narrow quartz-carbonate zones. Significant amounts of silver, pyrite, pyrrhotite, arsenopyrite, chalcopyrite, sphalerite and galena are closely associated with the gold mineralization (Riley, 1971 a).

5.0 Exploration History

A list of the previous exploration work done on the property is documented in Table 2. No significant gold showings occur on the property. Diamond drilling by Inlet Resources north of Martin Bay intersected iron formation containing up to 0.08 oz/t Au over 0.85m. In the northwest comer of the property, grab samples from old trenches assayed 0.488 oz/t Au but the highest grade returned from diamond drilling in the same area was 20 ppb. Drawson Red Lake Mines Ltd. drilled diorite and greywacke containing quartz carbonate stringers grading up to 0.08 oz/t Au in the north part of the property. Other isolated gold values up to 0.01 oz/t were obtained in localized quartz feldspar porphyry dikes, quartz veins and quartz carbonate stringers in mafic volcanics and iron formations.

6.0 1997 Exploration Program

A geological survey was done between August 5 and 29,1997 by the following personnel: Darwin Piroshco, consulting geologist; Jarrett Petroski, junior field assistant; Jason Furneaux, junior field assistant; and Patti Nakai-Lajoie, geologist. Preliminary field work was conducted on select portions of the property considered to have the highest potential for hosting gold mineralization. Field work consisting of re-establishing old grid lines, systematic geological mapping and rock sampling focused in the location of the deformation zones of Andrews et al. This included the mafic volcanics north of Martin Bay and Theta Island in the Fisher Islands group. The north shore of Middle Narrows was explored to evaluate the potential for hosting gold mineralization and to establish the characteristics of lithologies outside of the deformation zones.

Mapping and sampling were done on old previously cut grid lines. Base lines trending east-west at approximately l km intervals and north-south tie lines at approximately 100 or 200 meter intervals were re-established for geologic control. A total of 39 km. of grid lines were marked and chained. Mapping covered 28 km. of grid lines as well as along the shorelines. A total of 132 samples were taken and sent for assay of which 106 were analyzed for lihogeochemistry.

7.0 Property Geology

The area mapped north of Martin Bay consists of light to dark green, mainly massive, fine grained, variably calcareous mafic volcanics with lesser pillowed mafic volcanics. The mafic volcanics appear darker in colour and more massive towards the east side of the grid. A few flattened pillowed flows were mapped with tops to the southwest. Weak to moderate vertically dipping foliation was observed trending 90-110 degrees. At 12400E 9400N, a 15 to 20 cm. wide feldspar porphry trending 60 degrees and vertically dipping with SS-40% unaltered anhedral to subhedral ^ mm wide plagioclase phenocrysts is present. Carbonate alteration varies from weak fracture fillings to localized areas of strong pervasive alteration. Narrow ^0 cm. wide widely spaced, bleached sericitic, chloritic zones trending generally east-west parallel to foliation were present in the mafic volcanics. Narrow irregular discontinuous boudinaged barren quartz veins are present as fracture infillings and also occur parallel to foliation. Evidence of high strain north of Martin Bay was observed in a few ourcrops at the east end of the grid along the shoreline. At the east point close to 9400N a rusty weathered sericite-chlorite-calcite schist outcrops trending east-west with a dip of 60-70 degrees south. Pyrite stringers and veinlets were observed.

South of Martin Bay, the mafic volcanics along the north shore of Middle Narrows are dark green, fine grained, massive, non-foliated and relatively unaltered with weakly calcareous fracture fillings. A rusty chloritic schist trending 85-90 degrees and vertically dipping with calcite/Fe dolomite veins and Wo pyrite outcrops in a few areas.

The mafic volcanics on Theta Island are dark green, fine grained, massive to pillowed and brecciated. They are generally barren except for a few occurrences of ̂ /o disseminated pyrrhotite. A massive quartz porphyry outcrops on the south side of the island. A heterolithic conglomerate outcrops at 400W 508. This clast supported unit contains fragments of rhyolite, black cherty magnetite, quartz and mafic volcanics in a bleached, very fine grained felsic matrix containing plagioclase and sericite. Two narrow dark green to dark grey parallel bands of possibly siltstone to fine grained sandstone occur within this unit striking 135 degrees and dipping 70 degrees north.

Carbonate alteration varies from weak fracture infillings to locally pervasive. Strong carbonate alteration was mapped on the west shore of the island. A highly strained, light green, chloritic and strongly carbonated possible ultramafic unit containing sheeted carbonate veins outcrops on the northwest side. High strain is also evident on the west shore where flattened pillowed chloritic mafic volcanics contain two 25 cm. wide chloritic zones with narrow Fe dolomite veins. Here lineations trend 300/55. Strongly serpentinized ultramafics occur on the northwest shore where the rocks are strongly magnetic with pervasive carbonate and talcose alteration.

8.0 Geochemistry

A total of 132 samples were taken and assayed for gold and multiple elements. Of these, 106 were analyzed for lithogeochemistry. Sample locations are plotted on the sample location maps (Maps l and 2). For quality control, two sample standards from CANMET were also submitted (sample numbers 554051 and 554123). Samples were analyzed by

Page 15: GEOL ASSESSMENT RPT ON THE RED LAKE PROP · 2017-01-17 · on the Red Lake Property for Island-Arc Resources Corp. Fairlie, Baird and Todd Townships Red Lake Mining Division ... and

Chemex in Vancouver, B.C. All samples were crushed, split and ring pulverized to ^0*5/0 minus 150 mesh. A standard combined fire assay atomic absorption technique was used providing a minimum detection limit of 5 ppb gold. A standard plasma ICP technique (involving vapourization at 10000 degrees, atomization then mass/charge discrimination and detection) was used to analyze for multiple elements. X-ray fluorescence was utilized for lithogeochemical analyses. This technique involves fusion of the sample with lithium tetraborate flux to produce a glass disc which is then analyzed using an x-ray fluorescence spectrometer. The resulting intensities are converted to the appropriate oxide concentrations present in the original sample. All analytical results are listed in Appendix 1.

9.0 Results

The majority of gold values returned were less than the detection limit of 5 ppb, the highest being 35 ppb. Samples taken from Theta Island returned the highest arsenic values between 76 and 216 ppm. Assays indicated low values for Cu, Hg, Zn, Sb and Pb. Highest values were 300 ppm Cu, 2 ppm Hg, 18 ppm Zn, 6 ppm Sb and 12 ppm Pb.

Samples plotted on the AFM ternary diagram indicate that the majority of mafic volcanics sampled are of tholeiitic affinity (Figure 5). Minor calc-alkaline affinities are noted plus one ultramafic suggested by a high magnesium oxide value of 23.207o. A plot of TiO2 vs. A12O3 indicates a relatively direct relationship between the two immobile elements (Figure 6) implying that either element would be suitable for use in assessing other element variations. Plots of SiO2 and K2O values (Fig. 7) indicate minor increases in a few samples but no significant enrichment relative to background values (Tables 3 and 4). Similarly MgO, Na2O and CaO plots indicate insignificant depletions. The minor variations in enrichment/depletion of major oxides reflect low level hydrothermal alteration.

10.0 Conclusions and Recommendations

Characteristics associated with known gold deposits in the Red Lake camp have not been observed on the property in the areas considered to have the greatest potential for hosting gold mineralization. The extent and intensity of the proposed regional deformation zones have not been defined based on surface mapping of the property. Based on previous work and the results of the present mapping and sampling program, the economic potential of the property at depth is undetermined. Further exploration should be concentrated in the area of carbonate alteration and high strain zones centered around Martin Bay and extending to Theta Island. Geophysics and diamond drilling would be required to better evaluate the economic potential of the property at depth.
