Walker trained as a letterpress printer in high school and continued to study the trade in college. He graduated from the Ontario College of Art in 1983, and later from Brock University with a B.Ed in 1996. He then attended Ryerson and York University, where he earned an MA in Communication and Culture. In 2002 he was elected to the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts for his achievements in Canadian book arts. He is currently an Associate Professor at the Ontario College of Art and Design University, where he has been a member of the faculty teaching book-related arts since 1985. He is the graphic novel acquisitions editor for The Porcupine’s Quill, an independent Canadian publishing company, and a creative director at Firefly Books. Walker is a member of the Loving Society of Letterpress Printers and the Binders of Infinite Love and the Canadian Bookbinders and Book Artists Guild. In 1985, he founded Columbus Street Press with his wife, Michelle.

We are 35 and counting. I find it amazing that when the Festival began at that meeting in Anton Kuerti’s cottage 35 years ago many of the artists performing in this summer’s festival were not even born, and many had not even discovered their instruments, let alone started their careers.

On milestone years such as this there is a tendency to look back. Whilst this summer we have many long time friends coming to share Parry Sound’s accomplishment, we are looking to the future. The talent and international experience the Festival brings to Parry Sound each summer is truly staggering and we are committed to share this wealth with more of the community.

The Stockey Master Classes give young artists direct contact with great international artists such as Michel Strauss, Martin Roscoe and Janina Fialkowska. Strings Across the Sky, Jonathan’s Storm and Music Scores, our educational programme in the local schools throughout the year, reach into the young hearts of the future.

And watch out for “Quartets in Every Corner”, a series of pop-up concerts which will surprise you in venues around Parry Sound.

It’s our birthday and we intend to party for 24 days with over 75 concerts, lectures, cruises, dinners, and galas, ending on August 10 with the biggest project the Festival has ever attempted – Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony!

Festival of Films

The Festival of the Sound is pleased to announce the launch of a new film series to complement its 35-year tradition of classical music programming. These lively film screenings will match movie classics with the weekly themes of our musical programs. We look forward to featuring the work of both Canadian filmmakers and masters of world cinema. We hope you enjoy this exciting dialogue between the magic of music and the delights of the silver screen. This Festival has been programmed by William DiNovi.

A Weekend in the Country — July 25th to 27th

This Explorer Package is a two-day extravaganza of full-immersion programming. Festival of the Sound comes to you as you make the drive to Parry Sound with a CD that “curates” your travel, including stories, music, and anecdotes about the works you will be enjoying throughout the weekend. You’ll get a new perspective of classical masterworks as well as some exciting new music in the Afiara Quartet’s Playlist: Shuffle Program. Re-imagine live music and the moving picture with “Night at the Movies” and Stephen Prutsman’s score to a Buster Keaton classic “Sherlock Junior”, and have fun exploring the beauty of the Georgian Bay with the international cast of artists this weekend. Your package price of $600/couple includes two nights hotel and breakfast at the Log Cabin Inn, Friday night drinks on the deck, as well as lunch and dinner on Saturday. Quartets in Every Corner

Last season we had great fun getting to know our neighbours as we sent the music of J.S. Bach on a trip around town. This year, explore some of the best corners of Parry Sound with our favourite quartets! Keep your eyes peeled around town and the Festival website for news blasts on these fun, short pop-up concerts. Family friendly and casual, these concerts are pay-as-you-wish.

Island Queen Cruises

Enjoy a captain’s eye view of the Georgian Bay Archipelago during these popular three hour tours. Experience the towering beauty of the wilderness that surrounds you, while being serenaded by incredibly talented Festival musicians. Performances are on the lower deck of the Island Queen and can be heard throughout the ship.

Jonathan’s Storm

Kids and parents alike are invited to join us on this hero’s journey being presented outside in the round at Mission Hill Park. This free event will feature two workshops full of crafts and songs — each leading up to a performance of “Jonathan’s Storm” an opera for kids about overcoming adversity. It’s a full afternoon of fun, and promises to be a don’t miss event!

Behind the Music, Open Ears and Conversations with Keith

Want to learn more about your favourite pieces, composers or Festival artists? Go Behind the Music with the Festival of the Sound. This season Keith Horner will be talking with some remarkable Canadian composers and musicians, including An-Lun Huang and the Juno-nominated Allan Gordon Bell. Jeffrey Stokes will help you to further explore the music of Schubert and Beethoven. If you’ve never been to one of our popular free lecture events, come and see what all the fuss is about.

Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony

“He proposes to compose Schiller’s Freude, strophe by strophe. I expect something perfect, since he is wholly devoted to the great and sublime” — Fischenich

Thus praised years before it was even written Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony, and in particular its final choral movement based upon the Schiller poem has long been considered one of the most sublime pieces ever composed. We’re closing our 35th season with this masterwork celebrating love, fellowship and joy.

We’ve had much to celebrate this season, but we’ve saved the best for last! On August 10th, following our performance of Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony join us at the Log Cabin Inn for a very special party celebrating James Campbell’s 30 years of artistic leadership, as well as his birthday! BrYAN CHeNg

16 year-old Canadian cellist Bryan Cheng has attracted widespread attention for his natural, virtuosic command on the cello and his mature, impassioned musicianship. He discovered his love for the cello at age 3½, and made his orchestral debut at age 10. Since his orchestral debut, Mr. Cheng has been the guest soloist with I Musici for numerous concerts, including at Montreal’s Place des Arts, Pollack Concert Hall, Salle Claude-Champagne, Tudor Hall and Pierre Charbonneau Centre, as well two performances at Carnegie Hall.

Silvie Cheng made her Carnegie Hall debut in Weill Recital Hall in 2011, and has twice returned for sold-out recitals with her cellist brother, Bryan. Ms. Cheng has presented numerous recitals and concerts as soloist and

chamber musician in various venues across Canada and the United States, ranging from diplomatic embassies to notable venues such as New York’s Carnegie Hall and Steinway Hall, Ottawa’s National Arts Centre, Edmonton’s Winspear Centre, and Canada’s Parliament Hill, Rideau Hall, and Supreme Court. She has been featured at the Aspen Music Festival, the Ottawa International Chamber Music Festival, as well as at the Orford Music Festival in Quebec.

Following last year’s highly successful Chamber Music Development program, the Festival of the Sound presents a week-long series of master classes for some of Canada’s outstanding young pianists under the tutelage of our nation’s top teachers. Come observe the dynamic process of mentor and young artist exploring music, technique, and presentation together, culminating in transformed performances at the end of the week. Parry Sound’s Gordon Mok will be one of the featured young artists and the renowned Janina Fialkowska a featured pedagogue.

In the Festival’s innovative education

program Music Scores, children in

Grades 4 to 6 in thirteen area schools

enjoy six concert experiences, some of

which have included the True North Brass,

Festival Winds, a jazz ensemble,

the Toronto Symphony Youth Orchestra

and the National Ballet of Canada’s

YOU dance program. Prior to each of

these concerts, the musicians visit every

school, getting to know the students in

an informal setting, demonstrating their

instruments and preparing the children for

the concert. Then all 700 children come

to the Stockey Centre by bus or on foot

to listen to the musicians, now their

friends, in a formal concert setting.

No opening night audience can match

the excitement that precedes each of

these concerts.

Music Scores is offered without charge

to the children, their families and the

schools. The Festival of the Sound thanks

the Festival Board raises two dollars for

every dollar generated at the Box Office.

A recent survey of Canadian performing

arts organizations with similar budgets

showed that 4.7% of the total revenue

was raised by individual donations.

Our individual donors contributed 18%

of our revenue. Thanks to the support

of this wonderful membership base, we

are now one of Canada’s most successful

musical organizations.

Charles and Lois Stockey Endowment Fund

Charles and Lois Stockey were supporters of and workers for the Festival of the Sound in its formative years before they moved to Victoria, BC. In 2002, what began with a casual question about what was happening now in Parry Sound led to a donation of $1.7 million to name the Charles W. Stockey Centre for the Performing Arts. Now the Festival has a home, an intimate performance hall that has come to be ranked as one of the finest in the world for chamber music. During the 25th Anniversary Season in 2004, the Festival Board established the Charles and Lois Stockey Endowment Fund to honour our benefactors. To ensure the long-term health of the organization, all memorial donations and other gifts directed to this fund are invested, with the interest used to support annual operations.

Charles Stockey died in September of 2004 after a lengthy battle with cancer. Lois lives in Victoria and maintains a keen interest in news from Parry Sound.

Information about the Charles and Lois Stockey Endowment Fund is available at all Festival of the Sound concerts. Speak to one of the Directors wearing a “silver badge” or call the Festival Office. Contributions of any size are welcome and are eligible for a charitable tax receipt.

Youth Music Education Fund

This fund was established in the spring of 2010 with a generous donation from long-time Festival member Frances M.


Brown. She has established this fund to help ensure the future of Music Scores and other educational initiatives for youth. Additional donations to the Youth Music Education Fund are welcome at any time and are eligible for a charitable tax receipt.

Tickets will not be accepted for refund or resale. However, tickets may be exchanged up to 24 hours before the performance by contacting the Festival Office. A service charge of $1.00 per ticket will apply. Tickets from Passports or Mini-Passes are not eligible for exchange.
