Cover art: Sally Fairfax“My parents gave me a Baby Brownie camera when I was five and I have been taking pictures seriously ever since. Thirty years later, I began crafting glass. I present them together because I believe that glass suggests the fragility of the poles in ways that photos alone cannot. Glass is superficially similar to ice: it flows and, in some ways, reacts to heat like ice. And while glass can suggest some of the colors one sees, from grey and purple to shockingly turquoise, it is the variety of whites that flow together and react with the blues that I find most evocative. Here I try to express what has compelled me to return repeatedly to the far north and south, and to convey both the wild beauty and the fragility of those vanishing worlds.”

delighted and honored to be a part of the Dance Palace. Thank you for the support and warm welcome I have received from many in the Point Reyes community.

There is much to be excited about at the Dance Palace this fall. Classes, programs for youth and seniors, concerts, El Dia De Los Muertos, film, theater, artists exhibiting in the lobby, and much more. The Dance Palace is a very busy place! George Winston has generously agreed to tickle the ivories of our

baby grand on September 5 and Maria Muldaur will entertain us with her talents on November 14 to support our local community center.

Come join us! I look forward to your involvement at a reenergized Dance Palace that serves as a home to everyone in the community.

The Dance Palace Community & Cultural Center rings in the

holiday season and celebrates the 45th Annual

As the Dance Palace is filled with the sights, sounds and scents of the winter holidays, this year promises

to be a warm and wonderful event with a special focus on “Made in West Marin” handcrafted items and gifts.

The Holiday Crafts Fair was first held over 40 years ago and since that time the vibrant arts and crafts community of West Marin and beyond have come together each year to share their gifts with neighbors, friends, and visitors alike at the Dance Palace Holiday Crafts Fair. Vendors from West Marin and all over the Bay Area will sell their treasures —ceramics, chocolates, clothing, fiber arts, glasswork, herbs, metal & woodwork, jams & jellies, jewelry, oils, ornaments, paintings, soaps, toys, and so much more.

Friday night Point Reyes merchants will remain open late and downtown will be aglow with luminaries, a tree lighting and

Santa might just make an appearance. Come and celebrate a West Marin holiday tradition!

La Pastorela Sunday, December 13

The Dance Palace and the Latino community invite you to a presentation of La Pastorela/The Shepherds’ Play, a traditional Mexican retelling of the Christmas story.

Beginning at 5pm until 6 pm there will be traditional food for sale: pozole, tamales, hot chocolate, and Mexican Christmas punch. At 6 pm there will be a performance of folkloric ballet and at 7 pm the Shepherds’ Play will be presented.

This is a free event for the whole family. An amateur theater group from Petaluma will perform the play, and children are invited to participate by dressing as shepherds, devils, angels, villagers, or animals accompanying Joseph and Mary to Bethlehem. The evening will end with the breaking of piñatas. The Dance Palace y la comunidad Latina se les invitan a una celebración Navideña tradicional, La Pastorela, el dia domingo, 14 diciembre, a las 5 de la tarde. Un evento gratis para toda la familia.

Sing Along Messiah

Come sing Hallelujah with the whole family on Sunday, December 20th at the Dance Palace! Conductor Dr. Magen Solomon will lead the audience through Handel’s classic masterpiece. Four professional soloists will help lead each section. Musical scores will be provided to the audience so singing along with this great holiday tradition could not be easier.

Megan Solomon has been the Artistic Director of the San Francisco Choral Artists since 1995, Dr. Solomon brings a wealth of experience with University, professional and community choirs and many years experience as an innovative teacher and conductor. Under her leadership SFCA (a semi-professional chamber choir specializing in contemporary a cappella choral music) has premiered over 180 choral works, performed at conferences of Chorus America and the American Choral Directors Association, been awarded the ASCAP Adventurous Programming Award, and has released three CDs: With Strings Attached (2011), Music Among Friends (2005), and So Gracious Is the Time (1999). The ensemble has collaborated with nationally known instrumental ensembles including The Alexander String Quartet, Veretski Pass, The Whole Noyse, Sonos Handbell Ensemble and others.

SEPTEMBERFUKUSHIMA CONTAMINATION IN THE OCEAN AND IN THE BIOSPHERE Tim Mousseau, Research Biologist & Professor, University of South Carolina, Columbia, has studied the impacts of radioactive contaminants on biological communities in the Chernobyl region of Ukraine and Fukushima Prefecture, Japan. His research suggests that many species of birds, plants and animals have experienced direct toxicity as a result of the Chernobyl and Fukushima disasters. Ken Buesseler, Marine Radiochemist, Center for Marine and Environmental Radioactivity (CMER), assembled an international research cruise to sample the waters surrounding the nuclear plant. Buesseler is now monitoring over 50 sites along the West Coast, from Alaska to Mexico, with citizen-scientist funding and participation. SUMMER BRENNAN, THE OYSTER WAR: THE TRUE STORY OF A SMALL FARM, BIG POLITICS, AND THE FUTURE OF WILDERNESS The Oyster War follows the years-long controversy surrounding the Drakes Bay Oyster Company farm, formerly located in Point Reyes National Seashore. Brennan paints a full picture of how the Drakes Bay controversy came to be and investigates the complexities of the dispute and its key players. NOVEMBEREL DIA DE LOS MUERTOS - DAY OF THE DEADJoin us for a celebratory Day of the Dead procession from Gallery Route One to the Dance Palace. Featuring Aztec dancers

& drummers, the Common Voice Choir, processional Day of the Dead art, and your friends and neighbors in their best skeleton outfits. A ceremony and other surprises will be unveiled at the community altar, created specially for the event by local artist Ernesto Sanchez. Community members are encouraged to bring flowers, photographs, and other mementos of loved ones to be placed on the altar. The altar will be installed in the Dance Palace’s main hall starting in mid-October and all are welcome to visit and add to it while the hall is not in use. Mexican food and drink is available for purchase at the event. During the month of October, workshops in making paper flowers, paper Mache skeletons and other Day of the Dead processional art will beheld at Ernesto’s Studio and around town. MARIA MULDAUR’S WAY PAST MIDNIGHT40 years have gone by since her recording of “Midnight at the Oasis,” a chart-topping song about one very romantic evening. The Way Past Midnight show is “two very full sets of music.” A look at her catalogue gives you an idea of where she can go: “Cajun Moon” and “Don’t You Feel My Leg” are a pair from her


album “Louisiana Love Call;” “I’m a Woman” and “It Ain’t the Meat, It’s the Motion” come from “Waitress in the Donut Shop.” Her 2007 record “Naughty, Bawdy and Blue” brought cuts such as “Up the Country Blues” and “Down Home Blues.” In this show, Muldaur unspools anecdotes and photo projections from her friendships with Bob Dylan, Taj Mahal, John Sebastian and Janis Joplin. Art in the LobbyTHROUGH SEPT. 14: LORRAINE ALMEIDA, COSMIC PAINTINGS“I have been creating art for the last fifty years. The focus that painting requires is an active form of meditation for me. Committed to painting, while raising four children and with much encouragement, I earned an MFA at the San Francisco Art Institute. I have exhibited my work throughout the greater Bay Area and Sacramento, as well as Chicago and Russia.
