We have completed our field exploration and laboratory testing programs for the pond and canal
realignment borings for the Vanderbilt Beach Road Extension project in Naples, Collier County, FL.
Our services included the following tasks:
1. Conducted 22 continuous Standard Penetration Test (SPT) borings advanced to a depth
of 20 feet and labeled B-1 through B-23: 14 SPT borings were performed at locations within or near to the proposed pond sites, and 8 SPT borings were performed at select locations along the Cypress Canal realignment. Boring B-12 was not drilled because it was inaccessible. Boring B-8 was previously drilled for SFWMD for the Relocation of Cypress Weir #1 project.
2. Conducted an in-situ permeability test adjacent to each of the 14 pond borings to provide
an estimate of the hydraulic conductivity.
3. Performed laboratory tests including material moisture content, Atterberg limits, sieve analysis and organic content on selected samples to aid in soil classification.
4. Estimated the seasonal high groundwater table at each boring location.
The results of the SPT borings locations are summarized on the attached Report of Core Borings
sheets presented as Sheet Nos. 1 through 3 and individual boring logs. Each boring was located
by first plotting the borings within the pond area using Google Earth Pro and then determining the
latitude and longitude coordinates. A hand-held GPS unit was then used to locate each boring in
the field. The project surveyor (RWA Engineering) located each boring using State Plane
coordinates and determined the ground elevation (NAVD 88). The State Plane coordinates were

converted to latitude and longitude, which are provided on the Report of Core Borings Sheets and
boring logs along with the ground elevation at each boring location.
Laboratory tests consisting of natural moisture content (AASHTO T-265) Atterberg limits
(AASHTO T-89), sieve analysis (AASHTO T-88) and organic content (FM 1 T-267) are
summarized on the soil profiles adjacent to the depths from where the samples were recovered.
The results are also summarized in graphical form on Table 4.
Seasonal High Groundwater Table
The seasonal high groundwater table at each boring location was estimated by reviewing the
Collier County Soil Survey as published by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA)
Natural Resource Conservation Service. Table 1 is a summary of the USDA Soil Survey
information listing the USDA map symbols and soil names at each boring location. Table 2 is a
summary of the seasonal high groundwater table estimates for each boring location.
Hydraulic Conductivity of Site Soils
We measured the hydraulic conductivity at each pond boring location by performing in-situ
permeability tests. Each test typically consisted of inserting 10 feet of 2-inch diameter PVC screen
and 5 feet of PVC riser into a nominal 4-inch diameter hole formed using steel casing. The
annulus was packed with silica sand to just above the screened section as the steel casing was
withdrawn. Each piezometer was installed to depths ranging from 12 to 16 feet; therefore, the
permeability test is a measure of the coefficient of hydraulic conductivity averaged over the soils
(or rock) from depths ranging from 2 to 12 feet and 4 to 16 feet. The constant head method was
used to perform each test. The results are summarized in Table 3.
General Soil Stratigraphy
The results of the borings are presented on the Report of Core Borings Sheets – Sheet Nos. 1
through 3 and on the attached boring logs. Soil stratification is based on an examination of the
recovered soil samples, the laboratory testing and interpretation of field boring logs by a
geotechnical engineer. The actual transition between strata may be gradual. In some cases,
small variations in properties, not considered pertinent to the engineering evaluation, may have
been abbreviated for clarity.
The profiles represent the conditions at the boring locations only, and variations may occur
between the borings. The following soil descriptions and AASHTO Soil Classifications were used.

Project Soil Suitability Material use should be completed in accordance with FDOT Standard Plans, Indices 120-001
and 120-002. Materials directly beneath the base should be select materials. The following
summarizes the generalized use or non-use of the soils that will most likely be encountered at the
proposed pond locations:
1. The materials from Strata 1 and 2 are Select (A-1-a/A-1-b/A-3) materials and appear
satisfactory for use in the embankment when utilized in accordance with Standard
Plans, Index 120-001.
2. The material from Stratum 3 is Select (A-2-4) material and appears satisfactory for use
in the embankment when utilized in accordance with Standard Plans, Index 120-001.
However, this material is likely to retain excess moisture and may be difficult to dry
and compact. It should be used in the embankment above the water level existing at
the time of construction. This material may not be used in the subgrade portion of the
roadbed due to its organic content.
3. The materials from Strata 4 and 5 are Plastic (A-2-6/A-4) materials and shall be
removed in accordance with Standard Plans, Index 120-002. They may be placed
above the existing water level (at the time of construction) to within 4 feet of the
proposed base. They should be placed uniformly in the lower portion of the
embankment for some distance along the project rather than full depth for short
distances.

4. The material from Strata 6 and 7 are Natural Limestone Formations. Special tools and
equipment will be required to excavate and/or dewater this material.

SOIL BORING, SAMPLING AND TESTING METHODS
STANDARD PENETRATION TEST
The Standard Penetration Test (SPT) is a widely accepted method of in-situ testing of foundation
soils (ASTM D-1586). A 2-foot (0.6 m) long, 2-inch (50 mm) O.D. split-barrel sampler attached to
the end of a string of drilling rods is driven 18 inches (0.45 m) into the ground by successive blows
of a 140-pound (63.5 Kg) hammer freely dropping 30 inches (0.76 m). The number of blows needed
for each 6 inches (0.15 m) of penetration is recorded. The sum of the blows required for penetration
of the second and third 6-inch (0.15 m) increments penetration constitutes the test result or N-
value. After the test, the sampler is extracted from the ground and opened to allow visual description
of the retained soil sample. The N-value has been empirically correlated with various soil properties
allowing a conservative estimate of the behavior of soils under load. The following tables relate N-
values to a qualitative description of soil density and, for cohesive soils, an approximate unconfined
compressive strength (Qu):

The tests are usually performed at 5-foot (1.5 m) intervals. However, more frequent or continuous
testing is done by our firm through depths where a more accurate definition of the soils is required.
The test holes are advanced to the test elevations by rotary drilling with a cutting bit, using
circulating fluid to remove the cuttings and hold the fine grains in suspension. The circulating fluid,
which is bentonitic drilling mud, is also used to keep the hole open below the water table by
maintaining an excess hydrostatic pressure inside the hole. In some soil deposits, particularly highly
pervious ones, flush-coupled casing must be driven to just above the testing depth to keep the hole
open and/or prevent the loss of circulating fluid. After completion of a test boring, the hole is kept
open until a steady state groundwater level is recorded. The hole is then sealed by backfilling with
neat cement.
Representative split-spoon samples from each sampling interval and from different strata are
brought to our laboratory in air-tight jars for classification and testing, if necessary. Afterwards,
the samples are discarded unless prior arrangements have been made.
POWER AUGER BORINGS
Auger borings are used when a relatively large, continuous sampling of soil strata close to the
ground surface is desired. A 4-inch (100 mm) diameter, continuous flight, helical auger with a
cutting head at its end is screwed into the ground in 5-foot (1.5 m) sections. It is powered by the
rotary drill rig. The sample is recovered by withdrawing the auger out of the ground withoutrotating it. The soil sample so obtained, is described and representative samples put in bags orjars and returned to the laboratory for classification and testing, if necessary.
HAND AUGER BORINGS
Hand auger borings are used, if soil conditions are favorable, when the soil strata are to bedetermined within a shallow (approximately 5-foot [1.5 m]) depth or when access is not availableto power drilling equipment. A 3-inch (75 mm) diameter hand bucket auger with a cutting headis simultaneously turned and pressed into the ground. The bucket auger is retrieved atapproximately 6-inch (0.15 m) intervals and its contents emptied for inspection. Sometimes post-hole diggers are used, especially in the upper 3 feet (1 m) or so. The soil sample obtained isdescribed and representative samples put in bags or jars and transported to the laboratory forclassification and testing, if necessary.
UNDISTURBED SAMPLING
Undisturbed sampling implies the recovery of soil samples in a state as close to their naturalcondition as possible. Complete preservation of in-situ conditions cannot be realized; however,with careful handling and proper sampling techniques, disturbance during sampling can beminimized for most geotechnical engineering purposes. Testing of undisturbed samples gives amore accurate estimate of in-situ behavior than is possible with disturbed samples.
Normally, we obtain undisturbed samples by pushing a 2.875-inch (73 mm) I.D., thin wall seamlesssteel tube 24 inches (0.6 m) into the soil with a single stroke of a hydraulic ram. The sampler, whichis a Shelby tube, is 30 (0.8 m) inches long. After the sampler is retrieved, the ends are sealed in thefield and it is transported to our laboratory for visual description and testing, as needed. Undisturbedsampling is noted on the boring logs as thus "U-".
LABORATORY TEST METHODS
Soil samples returned to our laboratory are looked at again by a geotechnical engineer orgeotechnician to obtain more accurate descriptions of the soil strata. Laboratory testing isperformed on selected samples as deemed necessary to aid in soil classification and to help defineengineering properties of the soils. The test results are presented on the soil boring logs at thedepths at which the respective sample was recovered, except that grain-size distributions orselected other test results may be presented on separate tables, figures or plates as discussed inthis report, the results of which will be located in an Appendix. The soil descriptions shown on thelogs are based upon visual-manual procedures in accordance with local practice. Soil classificationis in general accordance with AASHTO M-145 or ASTM D-3282: The Classification of Soils andSoil Aggregate Mixtures for Highway Construction Purposes and is also based on visual-manualprocedures. Following is a list of abbreviations that may appear in the Remarks column on theboring logs indicating additional laboratory testing was performed, the results of which will usuallybe located in an Appendix.
