Fill out the Volunteer Agreement

Paperwork

Page 3: Gere teen volunteer training

Notes on the Paperwork:

Application• Email:

• Please use an email address that you ACTUALLY check – otherwise, **indicate** the best way to reach you…text/call/smoke signals etc.

• Special Interests/Skills:• Ex. Can leap over tall

buildings/make chocolate appear out of thin air/have memorized entire Dewey Decimal system

• Education/Training:• Have you volunteered at another

library?

Page 4: Gere teen volunteer training

Notes on the Paperwork:

Understanding• Performance of tasks

• You’re agreeing to perform these tasks accurately. The two biggest elements of this are:• 1. If you aren’t sure…ASK!• 2. Before you start a new task –

ASK!• I WILL harp more about this

later.

• Dress appropriately• This is not a gym workout or a

reality show. Dress sensibly, neatly and in a manner that would not shock your grandmother.

• Time Frame• Plan to complete your hours in one

to three months.

These and ONLY These Materials

The Materials You Will Be Handling

Page 6: Gere teen volunteer training

• Bins – the large square boxes on wheels that sit underneath the return slot. This is the first place your stuff lands when you return it. From there it gets put onto a Cart or into a Tub…

• Tubs – Hard plastic (blue, green, red) portable book containers that can go in delivery to other branches. Also used for JPBs

• Carts – on wheels, books go here to be FIRST checked in, then SECOND reshelved. Note the position of the book on the cart!

• Circ – Circulation. The process of stuff being checked out, used, and checked back in.

• PBs – Paperbacks. JPB – Juvenile Paperbacks

• J or Juv – “Juvenile” or for Kids (babies up to upper elementary)

• YA – “Young Adult” materials for older kids

• Adult – Stuff for grownups (and big kids)• Checked In – The process of scanning

the item on the computer that takes it OUT of the patron’s name and puts it back into “To-Be-Shelved” or “Available” Status

• ‘To Be Shelved’ – The item has been checked in and is ready to be returned to the shelf

• Label – the printed label attached to an item containing SKADS of important info. Look for it!!

• Spine – the binding of a book, the hinge of a DVD or CD case. The part that faces OUT when the item is shelved.

• Spine Label – Look at the spine of an item for VERY informative labels.

• Weed – like weeding a garden. We remove the items that are old or not circulating and send them downtown.

• In-house Use – Material that is removed from the shelf and used, but not actually checked out. Must be checked back in before reshelving.

• LCL – Lincoln City Libraries• Branch – There are eight (8) Branch

libraries, of which Gere is one.• Pages or Aids – The folks who get paid

to shelve materials, empty book drops, check in, process holds, etc.

• Trust me there are more silly words, but this is plenty for now. If somebody says something that sounds like English but doesn’t make sense – ASK!!!

Weird Library TerminologySo you have a clue what the heck we’re talking about.

Quick Vocabulary Lesson

Page 7: Gere teen volunteer training

Unless you have been SPECIFICALLY trained

by ME to shelve a specific type of

material, off a specific cart…

you are NOT TO TOUCH IT!

Oy vey with the threatening red text..

WTF?Because if you goof it up, I get yelled at, and you might not get to finish your hours.

Types of Material You Will (and WILL NOT)

Be Handling

Page 8: Gere teen volunteer training

There are (as of last year) 850,131 items circulating through Lincoln City Libraries.

Why are you harping on this? You want to finish your hours, right?

Types of Material You Will (and WILL NOT) Be Handling

Page 9: Gere teen volunteer training

Why are you STILL harping on this?If you goof it up, I get yelled at. I am plenty capable of doing things to get myself yelled at without your help, thank you very much.

• It takes months…even years for staff with bounteous amounts of higher education to learn all the pesky little nit-picky details about each type of material. You have 90

minutes.

Types of Material You Will (and WILL NOT) Be Handling

If you are interested in learning about the other 800,000 items, please go to library school, get your degree, and come back and apply for a job here in 4-6 years. We’d love to have you!!!

Page 10: Gere teen volunteer training

OMG You’re not finished yet???Do it right and I swear I’ll shut up about it!

Visual Aids*Items on this cart have been checked in. *If you start shelving stuff that hasn’t been checked in, then we get angry patrons SWEARING VEHEMENTLY and often loudly, that they brought their stuff back on time and why the heck are they getting overdue charges and what kind of dirty rotten so-and-so’s do we think we are anyway?*So. Not. Pretty.

Types of Material You Will Be Handling

Juvenile (j) PaperbacksThe CORRECT cart looks like this.If they’re not on a cart that looks like this? DO NOT SHELVE THEM!!

Page 12: Gere teen volunteer training

More Visual Aids

Seriously. It’s just tears and recriminations all around.

Types of Material You Will Be Handling

Shelve them here. Where the signs say they are. See? Picky Picky Picky

Types of Material You Will Be Handling

1. Board Books1. Board books are shelved

here:

Page 14: Gere teen volunteer training

More Visual Aids

Notice how all these books have LABELS on them? This is an important plot point.

Types of Material You Will Be Handling

2. Picture Books1. The larger size of a regular

picture book, but in paperback form.

2. JPB with a BLUE underline

Page 15: Gere teen volunteer training

More Visual Aids

The labels give you important information…like the underline color for example!

Types of Material You Will Be Handling

They go here. On this side.

Not on this side.

Page 16: Gere teen volunteer training

Just the right size for 3-4 year old hands. Isn’t that smart?

“Saw the whole thing, dude. First you were all like "whoa", and we were like "whoa", and you were like "whoa..."

Types of Material You Will Be Handling

4. Rigby ReadersAre a special type of First Reader. They are noted “RR” They come in two unique sizes, and have two different types of labeling (grr argh). The two types of labeling

are admittedly a pain in the patootie. Just get the like labels together and don’t try to insert any logic into it, it’ll just frustrate you.

Put all the Red circle 3-5’s together

Put all the “Yellow 6”s together

…and all the “Magenta 1”s together

5. Series Paperbacks have a GREEN underline

By “Series” in this case, we mean a series that has more than, say, SIX titles in it...and in some cases, it’s more like a bazillion – give or take.

Shelf is labeled with Series Name

Shelves are here on the left, next to the wall.
