North American International Livestock Expo 4-H Competition The weather was brisk…well, it was COLD, but the national competition of the 4-H Chicken and Turkey Barbecue was held in Louisville in the middle of November. Representing KY was Perry County 4-H’er, Robert Bowling, a freshman at Hazard High School. Robert was the state champion in the chicken BBQ this past summer. His scores were based on preparation and control of the charcoal fire and food safety handling practices as well as the cooked product of two chicken halves. He also delivered an oral presentation to a panel of judges on the Poultry Industry, Food Safety and Nutrition regarding poultry. Robert finished sixth and received a lapel pin and $75.00 cash!

21st Annual County 4-H Reality Store We are just beginning to get some of the student evaluations in from this event! Every 7th grader in both districts had the chance to “be” a 25 year old head of household, with a job, a family, and a mission to complete one month’s expenditures to run their household! Just as in real life…each youth’s situation was different….some had college education, some did not. Some had a spouse and children, some did not. For most it was a struggle to make ends meet that “month”. Here are just some of the comments from the students after this exercise: “This experience helped me realize how hard life can be. I realized that I need to stay in school. I also realized that college is an important choice in life.” “My experience with the Reality Store taught me that I need to save more money than spend it on junk. Another lesson I learned is that I need to get the necessities first, then the wanted things. I would like to thank the people who put on the Reality Store. I learned that I need to get a good education and get a good career. I also learned to not to have a family until I can take care of myself.”

A big Thank You to the participating community members working the booths! John Gross and PVA office, AEP Kentucky Power, Community Trust Bank, JC Penney’s, Employment Services, Family Resource Directors, Perry County Extension Service, Retired But Active Teachers, and various individuals who are interested in the welfare of our youth! To the 7th grade teachers working to prepare the youth. And to HCTC for use of the facilities! Thank YOU!

Looking for 4-H’ers Interested in the KY 4-H Culinary Challenge Could this be a program for you? . . . . . . Food shows are extremely popular. The Kentucky 4‐H Culinary Challenge generates interest among foodies and food show fans and adds excitement to 4‐H food and nutrition projects. The 4‐H challenge is similar to the Food Network’s “Chopped.”  What do teens need to know? Take baking out of the picture and concentrate on preparation skills for vegetables, fruits, pasta, grains, potatoes, milk products, eggs, dressings, quick meat cookery, mother sauces, stews, flavor profiles and seasonings. Any cooking is done on a butane burner. Teams create a plate of food using the three secret ingredients, supplemented with items from the pantry. Creativity in flavor and appearance on the plate are important. Teams will present their creation to the judges, explain their decisions and the preparation skills involved, talk about the nutritive value of the food on the plate and determine the number of servings (or portions of a serving) for the food groups included. 4-H teens are ages 14 to 18 as of January 1, 2018.  Contact this office by January 31st if you are interested in creating a team.
