STORY COUNTY EXTENSION

FOR 4-H & CLOVER KIDS The County Fair officially ended July 29th, but at the Extension Office, the fair

doesn’t end until the middle of August. This is when we spend time together reflecting on and evaluating the fair. For us, it’s one of the most important processes we implement. What went well? What could be improved? What did we learn that could make the experience better for everyone involved? Why do we take the time to do this? Because there is always room for improvement! 4-H’ers, make sure you take time to reflect as well. If you haven’t completed your record book this year, I’d encourage you to take some time and check out the forms on our website and write down your thoughts from the past year (the link is below). What was your goal and did you reach it? Did your project turn out like you’d hoped and were there obstacles you had to overcome? What do you want to work towards next year?

As you reflect, be sure to remember the 4-H motto – To Make the Best Better.

4-H Re-Enrollments & New Enrollments Began September 1 Step 1: As a returning 4-H or Clover Kid member, log into iowa.4honline.com to re-enroll. Your

family already has a profile. Your username is your email. Then type your password. You may use “I forgot my password” or contact the Extension office for a temporary password. For directions, go to:

http://www.extension.iastate.edu/4hfiles/EnrollmentDocs/MemberReEnrollment.pdf Step 2: Submit the annual 4-H youth development membership enrollment fee to the Extension

office. Mail a check to (and payable to) Story County Extension, PO Box 118, Nevada, Iowa 50201 In the memo, please note your child(ren)’s 4-H or Clover Kid membership.

Here are the following fees:

From September 1 through November 15, the enrollment fees is $35 per 4-H member in grades 4-12 and $10 per clover kid in grades K-3. We need re-enrollments completed by this time so we can have a more accurate membership when the 4-H insurance is paid. And so you continue to receive newsletters, etc.

4th graders that were clover kids last year will only need to pay $20 as the Story County 4-H Foundation will kindly support the rest of their fee.

A late fee will be added after November 15, then increasing the fee to $45 per 4-H member and $15 per clover kid member.

NEW 4-H members will pay $35 at ANY time during the 4-H year. NEW clover kids will pay $10 at ANY time during the 4-H year.

Volunteer 4-H/Clover Kid (Jr.) FLL Leaders/Coaches Neeeded Junior FIRST Lego League (Jr. FLL) has some start-up funding support from John Deere. This is set up as team grants for up to 100 new 4-H Clover Kid Jr.FLL teams at $200 each for this season. There will be an application for 4-H Clover Kid leaders to apply for Jr.FLL team startup funds. Funding guidelines indicated teams must consist of 5 youth ages 6-9 with 3 of those youth being female. There is a 2 year volunteer leader/coach commitment to the Jr. FLL Clover Kid teams. A Jr. FLL may meet 6-8 weeks leading up to a Jr. FLL Expo this year for example and do something similar again next year. Clover Kid Jr. FLL teams could meet year round too. This is flexible. Each team does require two adult volunteers that have successfully completed a background check and complete a one day training followed by an annual training. Team registration is open for Jr.FLL and will close on April 15, 2016. The “Waste Wise” season goes through June 2016. More information on Junior FIRST LEGO League can be found here: www.usfirst.org/jr.fll Story County Extension is looking for volunteers to lead/coach one or more teams for Jr. FLL as well as FLL teams for youth ages 9-14. As you visit with fellow parents, co-workers, etc. feel free to direct interested adults to Mary Wilkins, 4-H Coordinator, [email protected] or 515-382-6551. Families with interested youth can also contact Mary so she can communicate with them as opportunities become available.

National 4-H Week October 4-10 A great time to tell your friends what you like about 4-H! Do something as simple as wearing your 4-H shirt to school one day. Invite a friend to your next club activity. What will you do to tell others about 4-H? Send us pictures of what your club does to celebrate/promote this week so we can share with everyone at the County 4-H Awards Program!

The ISU Block and Bridle Club is in need of volunteers to help package 100,000 meals for

needy families on October 7 beginning at 9:00 a.m. The event will take place in the Kildee Hall Farm Bureau Pavilion on the ISU campus. If you have any 4-Hers in 7th-12th grades or volunteer

leaders that would like to volunteer to work a shift, we would love to have them. Please contact Brooke Dooley at [email protected] with questions or to sign up for a time slot.

Vet Med Expo – this can count as a workshop for 4-H records

Event will take place Saturday, October 24 at the ISU College of Veterinary Medicine in Ames. We will be promoting veterinary medicine in the community as well as encouraging Iowa youth to think about veterinary medicine as a career. Global Citizenship: Back in Session

The Global Citizenship Intern has returned. To celebrate a new year, The Citizenship Courier is taking on a new volume - Volume TWO! I will continue to promote stories from 4-Hers (past and present) and staff with global experiences, so let me know if you or someone you know has a story to share. https://www.extension.iastate.edu/4h/content/global-citizenship

The Legislative Learning page was created for a specific region that took youth to the Iowa Capitol and wanted a way to gauge their learning. This page was adapted for the public and can be used by youth when learning about the legislature in school and/or for a 4-H project or used by staff planning a trip to the Capitol for their youth.

The Global Citizenship page was created to pool together websites, resources, and ideas regarding Global Citizenship. There will be resources listed that can be used by youth, staff and/or parents! Information available at https://www.extension.iastate.edu/4h/projects/citizenship

Finally, as the new 4-H year begins, please consider providing opportunities for your youth to expand in the area of Global Citizenship. I am more than happy to help with planning and implementing as my schedule allows. (Rachel Wonderlich, [email protected])
