What is the German YMCA in London?

Founded in 1860, the Association is one of the oldest YMCAs in London and has been part of the English YMCA movement since that time. We are also one of the largest charities with German roots operating in England and support the German-speaking and local community in a variety of ways, from organised events and programmes, assistance to individuals in crisis situations, to material and practical support for other organisations.

On the following pages you will �nd details of our regular programmes and events: our Parent-Toddler group, the au pair Tea Morning, the Anglo-German Circle, Schubertiade Concerts, trips and visits, and much more.

Our home has been in the Lancaster Gate, Bayswater area north of Hyde Park in central London since 1959. Here, in Craven Terrace, is our Association’s centre and the Lancaster Hall Hotel. The hotel was opened in 1973 by the German YMCA and o�ers both the tourist and business traveller an ideal base in central London at a�ordable prices.

Who can take part in our programmes?

We are a Christian movement and stand for respect and freedom for all, tolerance and understanding between people of di�erent faiths, opinions and race.

We welcome people of different Christian traditions, those of other faiths and those of none.

Although, because of our Association’s heritage, the name contains “German”, “Young” and “Men”, we welcome

anyone of any age and nationality, male and female. Our doors are open to all, members and non-members alike.

What other services do we o�er?

Through our Youth Secretaries and the Programme Secretary (who is also the Association’s Chaplain) we aim to give advice to individuals, to those in crisis situations and those just in need of general advice. These could be long-term residents of London in need of ongoing support, an au pair who

has to leave her host family at short notice, a student seeking long-term accommodation or a young person seeking advice on employment in the United Kingdom. We also o�er an au pair placement service in cooperation with IN VIA and the VIJ in Germany.

We try to create a network of people who, through direct contact with each other, are able to support one another on an ongoing basis outside the activities in our centre.

Christmas MarketThe Market on Saturday on 3rd December had a great atmosphere and was the most crowded for years. The live music brought people in and many just stopped for a while and listened, taking a rest from their busy activities. The children were kept entertained by Rachel’s arts & crafts workshop and the magician. There was something for everyone and many left with big bags full of goodies. After taking o� the cost we were able to donate the pro�t of £2,700 to The Friends of St Mary’s Hospital, Paddington, for equipment for the Children’s Ward. It was even more than we aimed for. Many thanks to donors, customers, musicians and helpers!

Happy Birthday Arline!Our oldest pupil in the German class, Arline Firth, celebrated her 100th birthday in November. Congratulations!

DVDs for Seamen’s MissionIf you have spare DVDs that you don’t need we will happily collect and pass them on to lonely seafarers. On the ocean they usually don’t have TV reception.

Street MoneyA few people from the German YMCA have continued to collect money from the street. This year we received the results of �ve years of picking up from Nottingham. One member dedicated her penny-piggy-bank to the good cause. The �nal result of £216.31 were donated to The Connection at St Martin, the homeless charity in Trafalgar Square, together with the leftover biscuits from the Christmas Market (and one Stollen; all others were sold this year). £18.80 were from an oyster card lying in the street. So, if you �nd money, jewellery or the like, our Chaplain will happily add it to the collection for 2017.

Wenn ihr in ein Haus kommt, so sagt als Erstes: ‘Friede diesem Haus!’ Lukas 10,5

Friede diesem Haus! Hat ihnen das mal jemand als Erstes gesagt? Ich kann mich nicht erinnern, dass mir das passiert wäre. Friede hat sich im Deutschen nicht durchgesetzt als Gruss. Im Hebräischen oder Arabischen ist es dagegen weit verbreitet: Schalom oder Salam sagt man dort immer noch oft als ersten Gruss. Eigentlich schade. Frieden können wir immer gebrauchen. Wenn wir heute die Nachrichten hören, wünschen wir es bei vielen Berichten. Wir werden über�utet mit Spannungen, Attentaten und Bürgerkriegen. Selbst in recht friedlichen Gegenden wie Grossbritannien oder den USA ist die Sprache im politischen Diskurs oft spaltend und verletzend, polemisch. Dieses Wort kommt vom Griechischen Polemos – Krieg.

Im christlichen Europa hat diese Art Sprache leider Geschichte. Die Reformation, an deren 500. Jubiläum wir dieses Jahr denken, war bald nach Beginn geprägt von polemischer Sprache und hat neben vielen guten Kirchenreformen leider auch einige Kriege ausgelöst. Die gingen zwar meist um Macht statt Religion. Das macht die Sache aber auch nicht besser. Einige solche Spannungen zwischen protestantisch und römisch katholisch halten bis in unsere Tage an. Glücklicherweise bemühen sich die Konfessionen heute um Gemeinsamkeit und geben keinen Vorwand mehr für Kriege. Das Reformationsjubiläum soll zum ersten Mal gemeinsam begangen werden. Das freut mich sehr.

Friede diesem Haus! Ist das nur ein frommer Wunsch? Manche könnten sagen:

bei den Juden und Arabern scheint der Friedensgruss ja auch nichts zu nützen, wenn man sich Israel, Palästina, Syrien und die umliegenden Gebiete ansieht. Aber die politische Lage liegt ja nicht daran, dass ein Friedensgruss schlecht ist. Es ist ein Wunsch. Wenn der andere diesen Wunsch nicht teilt, kann es leider keinen Frieden geben. Darum ist der Wunsch nicht schlecht. Und wenn der Wunsch mit einem Gedanken an Gott gesprochen wird, ist es ein frommer Wunsch. Ja, ein frommer Wunsch, aber nicht “nur” ein frommer Wunsch. Es ist dann ein Gebet.

Der Monatsspruch stammt aus der Geschichte von 72 Jüngern, die Jesus vor sich her sendet, damit sie das Evangelium verbreiten. Die sollen diesen Gruss sagen, wenn sie auf ihrer Missionsreise in ein Haus gehen. Wenn das von Missionaren verlangt wird, bezieht es sich vielleicht gar nicht auf mich, auch wenn ich Christ bin? Vielleicht hat es sich deshalb in Europa nicht so verbreitet?

Im Matthäusevanglium haben wir den Missionsbefehl, der bei jeder Taufe gelesen wird: Darum gehet hin und machet zu Jüngern alle Völker: Taufet sie auf den Namen des Vaters und des Sohnes und des Heiligen Geistes 28,19. Das gilt allen Christen. Wenn wir getauft sind, sind wir beauftragt, Gottes Botschaft zu verbreiten, Friede diesem Haus! zu sagen, oder wenigstens zu denken. Gern auch auf Hebräisch oder Arabisch, wenn es leichter fällt.

Wird deswegen der Weltfrieden morgen ausbrechen? Vielleicht nicht gleich. Aber wenn ich es sage, mir und dem anderen wünsche und es im Herzen vor Gott bringe, verändert es mich und bringt zumindest mich dem Frieden näher. Dann fällt es dem

Anderen ho�entlich leichter, in Frieden mit mir zu leben. Denn das Gebet ist keine Brechstange um Gott zur Erfüllung meiner Wünsche zu zwingen, sondern ein Geschenk das mich mit ihm und Anderen in Verbindung setzt und mich von innen zum Guten verändert. Vielleicht kann ich dann bald sagen Friede diesem Haus!

Ich übe es erstmal im Stillen und versuche, weniger in mich hinein zu schimpfen, weniger polemisch zu denken.

�is sounds quite straightforward. Getting up is a sign of respect. On busses and the underground it’s also polite and useful when the seat is then o�ered to the older person. Unfortunately it doesn’t always happen. We have all heard about bad care homes or people isolated in their own houses. We all may need respect and digni�ed care when we get older. But the professionals can only do so much. It seems the working hours in the caring professions are getting fuller and fuller with vulnerable people still not getting enough attention. When have I last paid a visit or a telephone call? We all should show care and respect towards the older ones, showing our reverence for God and perhaps giving an example to the younger generation for the time when we need them. May God give us a happy heart to do this!

Au Pair ServicesThe German YMCA o�ers an au pair placement service in co-operation with the IN VIAand VIJ associations in Germany. To �nd the right family for the right au pair and vice versa is one of our aims. To facilitate exchange between cultures is another. With our programmes, which include social-cultural events especially addressed to au pairs, we aim to give a broad experience of country, history and culture. We also o�er the intercultural quali�cation course “Dare to Di�er”.

Telephone ContactWith the support of the trustees of the former German Old People’s Home “Homelands” we have a project for anybody who is a native German speaker and lives in the UK. If you can not meet other German speakers in person this is an opportunity to talk to someone in your language. For further information please phone Ursula Mitchell on 01268 551 931.

Volunteer Placement ServicesIn co-operation with other organisations we o�er young people the opportunity to volunteer abroad for a period of three to twelve months. Project themes could include: youth, sport,culture, social care, environment. Our aim is to provide young people with an interculturallearning experience and to encourage social integration.
