accomplishments of our graduates
strengthen the communities in which we
live and work. the support of donors is
vital in helping Germanna launch new
initiatives to enable the college to expand
its exceptional educational and training
programs and facilities to meet the needs
of its service region. Major projects in
various stages of planning include a new
location in Stafford county, replacement
of the Slaughter Building on the locust
Grove campus, new modular offices
and classrooms at daniel technology
center and expanding the Fredericksburg
campus. these large scale construction
projects require financial investments from
individual and organizational donors as
well as support from the commonwealth
of Virginia. i deeply appreciate those who
step forward to provide leadership gifts
that will enable Germanna to continue
to meet the increasing demand for
educational opportunities within reach
of all of our citizens.

Dear Friends,
It is with much pride that we look back upon the 2013-14 fiscal year at the Germanna
Community College Educational Foundation. As you will see in this Annual Report, last year
was extraordinary for the GCCEF.
The Foundation continues to open doors for all generations by supporting Germanna
Community College’s exceptional academic and workforce development programs. Ambitious
high school students tackle the rigorous curriculum in Dual Enrollment programs. Traditional
college age students earn associate’s degrees and transfer to four year universities. Middle
career adults enhance their knowledge and skills to advance their current careers or begin
new ones. Students of all ages enroll in Germanna’s programs simply because they want to
learn. Students attend Germanna seeking knowledge, skills, and credentials that help them
lead more engaged and productive lives.
Donor support enabled the Foundation to award nearly 500 scholarships this year. Scholarship
Monte Carlo celebrated its 20th Anniversary by raising nearly $150,000, the largest total
ever for this signature event that has raised more than $1,000,000 over the years to support
scholarships. An innovative Germanna Scholars Program was developed with donor support
and in partnership with the Culpeper Public School System. Thought-provoking campus
lectures, including one by an early leader of the civil rights movement and another by a
well-regarded poet, engaged and challenged our students. An advanced nursing skills
simulator purchased by the Foundation is making a big difference for nursing and health
technologies students. These are just a few of the many ways that donor support is enriching
the Germanna educational environment.
The Board of Directors is committed to helping Germanna students achieve their educational
dreams and obtain the knowledge and skills needed for success. With your help, we can
continue to open doors for the students in our community.

With our sound financial position and solid Board leadership,
the Foundation will be able to continue to achieve its mission
of helping the College serve students and strengthen the
region served by Germanna. We, as custodians of donors’
gifts, are committed to raising the financial resources
required to support our students and strengthen Germanna’s
excellent academic and workforce development programs
and its facilities.
Our fundraising initiatives have been a tremendous success.
Total contributions increased from $650,000 to $900,000,
representing a 38 percent increase. Private funds held by
the Foundation increased by 15 percent from $5.2 million
to $6 million at the same time.
The Distinguished Person of the Year, Scholarship Monte
Carlo, Scholarship Reception, Golf Tournament and Annual
Dinner events were very successful in raising money, and
in recognizing donors, scholarship recipients, community
leaders, and faculty and staff.
None of these efforts would be possible without the support
of our many volunteers, friends, faculty and staff, students,
and alumni who give their time and talent to enrich all
aspects of the College.
As we look to the future, we are excited about our growth
and our continued service to our community and its students.
It is with such an engaged and generous community, I am
confident we will continue to have great success.

Enrollment demand from our
students in Stafford County is
so great that Germanna must
build a permanent campus in
Stafford. The Stafford County
pledge of $1,000,000 to support
the development of the campus
and the County’s assistance
in obtaining the property for
the campus are the types of
investments required to expand
our capacity to serve Germanna
students. Stafford EDA members

Engineering Students Win Prestigious Engineering competition
Coca Cola All-USA Academic Team
member Stefano Sarris is joined by
Germanna internship coordinator Cheri
Ober and adjunct professor Harvey
Gold. Stefano received his associate’s
degree from Germanna in May and will
study environmental science at Cornell
University. At Germanna, he received
an Atlantic Builders scholarship from
CEO Adam Fried and the Germanna
Educational Foundation. Monique Lewis,
a faculty member and Phi Theta Kappa
Honor Society advisor, said Stefano
“epitomizes the diverse student body found
at GCC. Our students have unique stories
and overcome great odds to become
successful. His drive is awe inspiring.”
Germanna Mechanical Engineering students won first place for their multi-rotor copter design in the
prestigious Student Design Competition at the American Society of Mechanical Engineers’ Student
Competition and Conference. Winning this most prestigious of all the awards at the competition has
qualified the team for a competition which will be held at the International Mechanical Engineering
Congress and Exposition in Montreal. The winning copter design was created by Andy Fabian,
Zach Yee, Ethan Fiore, and Reuben Strangelove (L-R). Charles DeLorenzo took second place and
Jade Thompson earned third place in the Engineering Website Design Competition.
Germanna students were the only community college participants among the 20 colleges and
universities participating that included Drexel, Temple, and Rochester Institute of Technology. Dr. Davyda
Hammond, Engineering Program Department Chair, said, “All of our students presented work that was
of exceptional quality and reflected
the strength of our STEM programs
at Germanna. I am deeply
appreciative of the substantial
financial and other help that was
provided by the GCC leadership
and departments to make this
trip a success.” Several of the
engineering students participating
in the competition or attending
the conference are recipients of
scholarships provided by donors
to the GCC Educational Foundation
including scholarships provided
by GenCorp Foundation and
Rappahannock Electric Cooperative.

Highlighting Student Stories
Reaching dreams through dual Enrollment
Eastern View High School senior TaNae Holmes is a Dual
Enrollment student in the Germanna Practical Nursing
Program offered on GCC’s Locust Grove Campus and
at Eastern View High School. The two year program is
a partnership between Germanna, Culpeper Regional
Hospital and Culpeper County Public Schools. In addition
to her passion for nursing, the honor student enjoys
playing the piano, riding horses, volunteering, and
playing varsity basketball. TaNae’s exceptionally positive
experience has confirmed and strengthened her desire
to continue studying nursing. She will attend Longwood
University where she hopes to earn her RN-BSN. TaNae
will explore geriatric nursing and working with elderly
patients in Veterans Administration hospitals as nursing
career possibilities.
Mountain View High School graduate
and Commonwealth Legacy Scholar
Jasmine Kellaway is a hard-working and
highly motivated Germanna student
who graduated from high school with
distinguished honors. Kellaway noted,
“I thought it would be smart for me to
save money by going to Germanna,
earning my associate’s degree, then
transferring to Virginia Tech. Two years
at Germanna is a lot less expensive than
two years at a university. I want to be an
engineer and Germanna is a really good
stepping stone for transferring to Virginia Tech with the guaranteed transfer agreement. The
classes are a good size for me. You have a lot of one on one time with the professors.” College
credit she earned at Mountain View through Germanna’s Dual Enrollment program may help
her earn her associate’s degree in less than two years.
“Jasmine set the standard for exceeding expectations on day one of my Engineering Graphics
course and has continued to impress me with her work ethic and aptitude over the entire
semester,” Engineering Department Chair, Dr. Davyda Hammond said. “She loves to learn
and challenge herself in the classroom; yet, she is not only concerned about mastering the
course material for herself. She helps her fellow classmates by sharing her knowledge so that
everyone in the class can produce their best work. She is highly intelligent, conscientious, and
considerate—a rare combination. Kellaway considers herself fortunate to have graduated from
high school at a time Germanna’s new Engineering Program is taking off—there were
228 students in the program in Fall 2013—and just a year after the college opened its
impressive new Science & Engineering Building and Information Commons.
