Restoring Body and Spirit

it can be. In fact, spinal pain is one of the leading causes of both

temporary and permanent disability in the United States today,

affecting nearly 8 out of 10 Americans at some point. Moreover,

its impact on quality of life can be as devastating and demoralizing

as its physical toll.

Spine Center in Chevy Chase are here to help. We are one of

only a few centers in the area qualified to care for both adults

and children.

surgery and physiatry, along with specialists in psychology and

physical therapy. Using a multidisciplinary approach, we assure

an optimal outcome.

Our TeamThe MedStar Spine Center features an experienced team of board-certified, fellowship-trained physicians along with other specialists trained in the field:

• Physiatrists—Physicians trained in physical medicine and rehabilitation who specialize in the diagnosis and treatment of spinal conditions. Physiatrists use a variety of approaches to treat back and neck pain non-surgically, including interventional spine injections. These specialists are often your first contact in the evaluation and treatment process.

• Spine Surgeons—Experts in either neurosurgery or orthopaedic surgery who focus exclusively on conditions affecting the spine that cannot be relieved through other means. Each patient is first carefully evaluated to achieve the most effective and long-lasting outcome through the most appropriate minimally invasive or complex surgical technique.

• Pediatric Spine Surgeons—Specialty surgeons with additional fellowship training in pediatric spine conditions. The MedStar Spine Center is one of the few in the area to care for children ages 10 and up.

• Psychologists—Experts who help patients cope with both the physical and emotional aspects of pain. Psychologists teach relaxation techniques, help patients build new coping skills and adopt lifestyle changes to help address pain-related anxiety or depression.

• Physical Therapists—Rehabilitation specialists who work hand-in-hand with your physician to help reduce pain and restore function through strengthening, flexibility, stabilization and mobility techniques. At the Spine Center, our physical therapists provide assessment, advice and, when needed, referral to one of MedStar National Rehabilitation Network’s 50 full-service physical therapy and rehabilitation locations throughout the Baltimore/Washington region, including the Barlow Building and nearby Friendship Heights sites.

How We Work At the MedStar Spine Center in Chevy Chase, we offer a full spectrum of outpatient treatments, consultation and follow-up for both acute and chronic back and neck conditions. Treatment is tailored to the specific needs of each individual and always starts with the most conservative approach possible. Upon arrival, you are evaluated by one of our physiatrists as the first step toward an accurate diagnosis. As part of the process, you may need imaging studies using X-ray or other technology available on-site for your convenience.

Many patients can be helped through the Center’s various non-surgical treatment options. For the less than 10 percent who see little or no improvement, the physiatrist will recommend a consultation at the Chevy Chase site with one of our spine surgeons.

Should surgery be needed, procedures are performed at MedStar Georgetown University Hospital, with many patients eligible for a minimally invasive procedure. In fact, MedStar Georgetown uses minimally invasive spinal surgery more often, and for more conditions, than any other hospital in the area.

Additionally, if you have already been recommended for surgery and are seeking a second opinion, our surgeons can evaluate you and help you reach the best decision for your condition.

Treatments Offered On-site • Physical Therapy Assessment• Epidural Steroid Injection• Nerve Root Injection• Facet Joint Injection• Medial Branch Block

• Sacroiliac (SI) Joint Injection• Spinal Cord Stimulator Trial• Surgical consultation,

evaluation and follow-up• And more

Setting the Standards for Spine CareThe specialists at the MedStar Spine Center are the experts of today's and the architects of tomorrow’s care. Not only do they deliver the most up-to-date patient care currently available, but they also conduct the research that will help to develop and perfect the treatments of the future. Equally important, they teach and train the next generation of spine specialists through classroom and hands-on instruction, as well as participate in major national and international lectures.

In addition, our specialists help many gain access to new treatments and approaches through clinical trials, often unavailable elsewhere. For eligible and willing patients, improved health—or a personal contribution toward the health of others—is often the reward for participating in a clinical trial.
