Cheyenne Elliott, the beautiful and talented rising soul-inspired pop singer, is the granddaughter of legendary icon Dionne Warwick and cousin to the late Whitney Houston. Eliott has a new single and is currently making more new music. She was gracious enough to have a conversation with me and share her thoughts about her family and her journey.

Cheyenne Elliott

BY EILEEN SHAPIRO

What is it like being the granddaughter of Dionne Warwick? It’s amazing. I’m very blessed. I was talking to her yesterday about having an amazing family full of legends. It’s just incredible. When did you actually start singing, and how were you introduced to the entertainment industry? I used to go to the studio with my dad and listen to him while he laid down tracks. Then when I was 12 years old, I went to a concert at Coney Island with my grandmother. I’d been watching her my entire life. So I decided to go one night because it was close to where I lived, and she was going to bring me up on stage to sing “That’s What Friends Are For,” and from that moment that’s when it kind of started, my musical journey. That’s when I decided, “Oh, I love this!” The energy on stage was amazing. That’s such a

young age to really be taking that all in and experiencing it. I fell in love with the stage; I fell in love with the crowd. So really about 11, 12 is when I really started doing what I want to do. That’s almost like a fairytale. How often do you speak with your grandmother? Quite often. I talk to her when I can. Recently I’ve been talking to her a few times a week. She calls me to check in. I call her to just check in and see how she’s doing. We talk business, but most of the time we talk about what’s going on. I talk to her all the time. She’s always available for me, and I love that about her. She makes the time. That is so sweet. You’re also the cousin of the late Whitney Houston. I am, yes. What was it like growing up with a second icon as a

cousin? Did you

see her a lot? I got to see Whitney quite a lot. She was so busy. But I saw her at family holidays, family gatherings. She kind of knew that I wanted to sing. She always encouraged me to keep going and pursuing. She was very encouraging and inspiring as a young girl. Now what are you up to, as far as your new single and everything else that you’re working on? We are working on new music. We’re working on a full-length project. The song “With You” is a dance track, and I’m getting really great feedback, but my new music is more…we like to call it “soul-inspired pop.” Soul-inspired pop. I like that. It’s more of a John Legend [style]. It’s still mainstream, but there is definitely that soul sound. That’s what

Page 3: Get Out! Str8 Magazine – Issue 9/1 – June 2015 | CHEYENNE ELLIOTT

my album sounds like. I love a dance song, I do, but you’re going to hear a new, different side of me, and I’m excited. That’s really who I am. Are you going to tour in support of your new sound? Not just yet. Once more music is released. Right now, this summer, I’m going to be touring with the new single. We’ll be doing performances in different clubs around the city. Probably other states as well, but once more music is released and put together we’ll be working on a full-blown tour. Cheyenne, you’re wearing a warning label. What does that label say? Oh, no, a warning label. I think of myself as a sweetheart, but I don’t know, that’s a good question. “Get ready for some fun!” I kind of like fun, and I kind of like energy. That’s who I am, and I always want to have a good time. Perfect. Is your glass half empty or half full? Half full. I have to live life that way. You just have to look at it like what are the positives in my life at all times. There’s always going to be amazing things. There’s always going to be bad things. But if you focus on those amazing things, that will keep you going. You seem like a really happy person. I am. I’m young, I’m happy, I’m alive, I’m healthy. Why not, you know? And very beautiful. Thank you. What makes you angry? I mean, you don’t seem like you’d ever get angry, but if you did, what would it be

about? When I see people pick on celebrities in the media about their personal lives. That makes me angry. Just because they are in the public light doesn’t make them any less human. It makes me sad more than anything that people take jobs so easily like it’s nothing. People tell me all the time: “You know, Cheyenne, you’re walking into that. Are you ready for this?” I’ve grown up in a family that has taught me how to deal with the media, taught me to proceed with caution, to handle everything. I’m really blessed. But it still bothers me when they tear them apart, when they don’t even really know them.

That’s a really good answer, one I so totally agree with. The media can be powerful. It is very powerful. They can make you or break you. They really can. You want

to present yourself in a good light.

Well, you answer my questions as if you’d rehearsed them, and I know you couldn’t have possibly. You’re smart, talented, pretty. You’ve got the whole package going on there. Oh, thank you. You were just on Andy Cohen’s show right? Yes, that was an amazing experience. It was so exhilarating to me being on live television like that. I haven’t done anything like that before. Was he fun? Oh, so fun, so nice, and the crew was so nice.

They made me feel very comfortable. The live audience was great. I had a great time. I just tried to keep it fun and fresh. Being raised amidst such a famous, talented family, did you ever feel pressured into becoming a performer, or did you just want to? Definitely, if any pressure was there, it was not coming from my family. They wanted me to find my own destiny and my own path, and it just happened to be music. That’s what I love. It was really in my blood. From society, of course, there’s gonna be pressure. I have huge shoes to fill. If we could see what’s in your heart at this very moment, what would we see? That’s a great question: my love for music, my love for my family, the passion that I have, the drive, determination, a lot of positive energy. That’s the state that I’m living in, and that’s where I wanna stay. What do you think your best quality is? I think I’m a very loyal person: loyal to my family, loyal to my friends. When I love you, I love you hard, so I’m there for you through the good, through the bad. facebook.com/officialcheyenneelliot

What’s new, Niki? I’m just getting up to start my day because I was in the Hamptons last night. I had a

gig with my band Pants Velour in West Hampton. After we left the gig I said to my band, “Let’s go to the ocean.” It was like 43 degrees. It was freezing. We drove to the beach, and they ran and jumped into the water.

No way. Yeah, it was fun. Lots of new things are happening for you since we last spoke. Yes, the song is doing really, really well. Tell me about MTV. Yeah, Ryan and Anthony sent me a text that MTV and Logo had picked up the video—MTV.com, as far as I know right now, and Logo.

I’m just happy it’s on their radar.

And what’s “Mancave”? It’s a blog. It’s affiliated with CBS,

and they do like silly questions. They emailed me questions. I knew it was kind of tongue and cheek; it wasn’t your average interview. I got to be a little silly. I understand that your video is being played in all the gyms. I have friends that live in Texas, friends in LA, family in Florida. They’ve been sending us videos of it playing in their local gyms. Anthony and I are both members of Planet Fitness, so Anthony and I always hear it when we’re working out. The first time I heard it, it wasn’t playing that loud, and then I saw the video, and I ran up to the treadmill and took a screenshot. It’s just cool cause I hear it in the gym when I’m working out.

The last time “Get Out!” visited with Niki Darling, she and Ryan Skyy had just released their brand-new video “Done.” In a very short time Niki and her release “Done” have accomplished much. I was fortunate to have another conversation with her to see what she has been up to.

Fitness is a really big part of my life. I know. I used to teach yoga. Fitness is a passion of mine. I want to start my own fitness brand from clothing, unique workouts and a vegetarian food line that everyone can enjoy, not just vegetarians/vegans. That sounds very exciting. So what else are you up to? We have this massive remix production package that’s happening with Dave Aude. He’s a legendary producer. He’s the guy Beyoncé’s people will work with when they want an official dance remix. We met him when we were in LA. When it came time to do a remix, Ryan reached out to him. It’s the perfect blend of pop. It’s great for everybody. It’s the kind of remix that everybody can get into. I’m really excited about working on new material as well. I’ve been working with Pants Velour. So I’m taking it to the next level and kind of defining my sound. It’s been a really good journey. The Socialytes, from Baltimore, Maryland, will be the next producers I’m going to work with, along with Ryan and Anthony. And then Ryan is putting together a tour. I told him my bags are packed, let’s go! What is it that you enjoy most about performing? I actually like all the behind-the-scenes stuff preparing for the show. It’s a lot of work, but it’s a lot of fun, because I have a great team. All the rehearsing, the planning and then comes the execution. It’s amazing! facebook.com/nikidarlingfanpage Instagram: @nikidarlin Twitter: @nikidarlin Video: http://youtu.be/kp9Mz1q6fWY

It is a charity that is pro-cancer research, so they help build funding for cancer research and the fight against cancer.

What else is new? Everything is going good. I just got back from North Carolina recently from working on new material for the album with producer/songwriter Sam Harmonix, who has worked with Jim Bean and Timbaland. Also, I will be going to LA to work with Grammy Producer Femdouble and M-base in July. M-base is a Grammy-nominated songwriter who is signed with Dog Chow. Mo’NiqueOne of the most genuine and blessed people I have ever had the honor of speaking with, Academy Award-winner Mo’Nique is about to debut one of the most innocently powerful movies ever to hit the film industry: “Blackbird.”

Mo’Nique has visited nearly every type of genre the world of entertainment has to offer, from stand-up comedy to serious dramatic roles to hosting her own late-night talk show to theater. Besides starring in “Blackbird,” she has also produced along with her husband, Sidney Hicks, this revolutionary, ground-breaking movie, which promises to astound audiences everywhere and perhaps change the way parents of gay children view their situation.

“Blackbird” stars Mo’Nique, Isaiah Washington and introduces Julian

Walker as Randy. Under the brilliant direction of Patrik-Ian Polk, “Blackbird” is an extremely sensitive film concerning the coming out and coming of age of a black, gay youth growing up the midst of a religious, American, small-town environment. The soundtrack and vocals in the film are nothing short of amazing as well. Acquired by RJ Entertainment, owned by Bob Johnson, founder of BET Networks, “Blackbird” is scheduled for theatrical release on April 24, 2015. Among some of Mo’Nique’s vast array of credits are her role as Nikki Parker in the UPN series “The Parkers”; hosting “The Mo’Nique Show”; starring on stage in “The Vagina Monologues”; appearances on TV shows such as “The Oprah Winfrey Show”; as well as a slew of film credits, including her Oscar-winning role in “Precious.” Speaking with Mo’Nique was a very spiritual experience. She displayed a candid and caring sensitivity

toward her personal life, her role in “Blackbird” and toward humanity in general. I found her to be a unique, special, warm and loving person! First of all, I am so in love with this movie and your role in the movie. Thank you. What about this film inspired you to not only star in it but to produce it as well? Well to executive produce with my husband Sidney, and to have real ownership of our image and likeness, will be out there forever. I actually play the character—we all know her! I know those mothers and those fathers that have a real hard time loving their babies for who they are. I’ve seen it up close and personal. What we’re hoping with this, Eileen, is that people will walk away with being able to accept who they are and accepting others for who they are and loving each other through this journey called life.

Did you have a favorite scene in the film? Oh, Eileen, that’s a good one. OK, so, I’m going to say this scene was more challenging for Julian. It was the scene where I had to slap him in his face!

Well, I’m not a professional stunt person, so I don’t know how to fake slap.  Do you feel that being black in the gay community differs from anyone else gay?  There was a time I did feel that way. There was a time I felt the black gay story was just the

black gay story, just within the community. However, when we took “Blackbird” to the festivals in different areas of the country, and you’ve got every color of beings coming up to you and saying, “I am Randy Rousseau, that was my story”—that was the white gay man, the Asian gay man, the Latin gay man, the black gay man. “That was my story.” So I don’t believe this story is unique to the black community.

BY EILEEN SHAPIRO

Page 13: Get Out! Str8 Magazine – Issue 9/1 – June 2015 | CHEYENNE ELLIOTT

The book that inspired the movie took place 30 years ago. Do you think conditions have improved since then when referring to a gay person coming out and to straight people’s view of gay people?  You gotta know at one time, to say it out loud, that wasn’t popular to do. To say it out

loud could be dangerous to your life. I think that there are some improvements. Do we have a long way to go? YES! We have a long way to go as human beings treating each other well. That seems to be a problem with us. We just pick out the issues that we want to pick out. It may be gay, it may be black, it may be women, but the moment we as a human race can treat each other good on purpose, watch what could happen.  You have had so many achievements. You’re an actress, a comedian, a producer, you’ve been in theater, on television, you’re an ordained minister… Only when I’m doing weddings. You’re also a mom, a wife. Is there anything that you haven’t achieved that you still dream of doing? Eileen, I’m gonna share this with you. Great. You know what I wanna do? What? I wanna be a cabaret singer. I love that. I think you would be amazing. Listen. You know, my husband Sidney and I, we’ve been best friends since the tenth grade, since we were 14 years old. I can remember one day being up on the balcony in high school and saying to him, “One day we’re gonna be

stars,” and he said, “You first.” Now, to be in a place in life, everything I’ve ever asked for I’ve been given—everything! So to say what is it that I wanna do that I haven’t done yet, for me to want more, I think the universe would say, “Really? Cause everything you’ve

asked for, I’ve given you.” And the most important thing is I wanted to be a wife and a mommy. Now, the first shot I got

at being a mommy, I was chasing fame, I was trying to be in all these places, so my son that’s in his 20s, our relationship is strained. Well, I asked if I could have children again, [and] the universe blessed me with three more children, and I asked the universe, “Can I please be a wife again?” Because the first [time] I didn’t understand how to be a wife, cause I was trying to be famous. So to receive those blessings and those prayers to be answered, I’m grateful for what I’ve been given, right now in life. I’ve been given everything I’ve ever asked for. You seem like the ultimate independent woman. Were you always independent, or did that just evolve through your profession? I appreciate being called an independent woman; however, I don’t wanna be that independent woman. I’m so grateful to have an amazing partner in this man named Sidney Hicks. I’m so grateful to be a wife and a mommy. I think when we get caught up about being the “independent woman,” we wanna be so independent that we forget that we have husbands,

we forget that we are mommies because we’re so independent. I would raise my arms up and show my muscles and say, “I am woman, hear me roar,” but I kept finding out I was lonely when I did that. You could be independent, but you’ll be by your damn self. I’m independently proud to say I love being a wife and a mommy. I love that this movie…is under our production company, Hicks Media Productions, which is Mo’Nique and Sidney, kids that met each other in high school. We have a part of putting that up on the big screen. So I’m independently proud to say that I don’t have to be this independent woman on my own. I love being a teammate. What kind of message do you hope to bring forth with this film? Acceptance. We hope [for] acceptance and to love each other in a way that

we have never loved before and allowing people to be who they were made to be. We’re really hoping that when they get up and walk out of the theater that they’re holding hand in hand with their baby that is gay, but they just couldn’t come out and say it out loud. We’ll

hope that they will squeeze that baby’s hand even tighter and whisper in their ear, “I’ve got you.” That’s what we’re hoping, that people understand that word called faith, because that woman had faith that was undeniable. When everybody though that that little girl was dead and gone, that woman kept saying, “No, no, no, no, no.” We’re hoping that people walk away with an openness in their heart. blackbirdthemovie.com

Paul Montoya

Besides being an insanely adorable Latino actor, Paul Montoya is currently involved in rehearsals with the Repertorio Español theatre company, where he is co-directing “Cronica de una Muerte Anuncida,” a play that inspired him 15 years ago to pursue an acting career. One of the presenters this year at The Get Out! Magazine Awards, I managed to catch Montoya in between rehearsals for a conversation about Latino theatre in New York City.

How are you? Good. I was rehearsing.

What are you rehearsing for? It’s a play, and we’re going to be in a festival - The Dominican Culture Festival, “Del Comisionado Dominicano.” Are you Dominican? No, I’m Colombian, but it’s for Latinos, not just Dominicans. It’s done in Spanish? Yeah, it’s in Spanish. All the plays that I’m doing right now are in Spanish. So we’re competing in the festival, and there are very good prizes. The first place is $4,000, second prize is $3,000 and third is $2,000. Are you acting in it? In this one I’m not acting; I’m co-directing with my best friend. Also, I’m in charge of the cinematography, the costumes and makeup. When did you decide to be an actor or be involved in the entertainment business? Since I was a kid. My mom, she was an actress. She used to bring me to all her plays. So I grew up seeing all the plays. Since I was a kid I wanted to be an actor. I wanted to be an actor on TV before the plays of course, but then after seeing the plays I wanted to become a theatre actor. That’s why I wanted to do theatre. I went to see this play when I was 15 years old. The play was “Cronica de una Muerte Anuncida,” and I was so impressed, I wanted to do something like that. I wanted to be on stage,

and 15 years later, I’m now doing the play that I saw when I was 15 years old. I’m in the cast. I saw it in Colombia ,and now the company Repertorio Español is doing it here. Why did you leave Colombia? The real story is because my dad lived in Miami. I never had any relationship with him. I was there for like three months, then I went to Chicago, where I lived for seven years. I put acting to the side, because I was concentrating on other stuff, like working, just life. Then I started getting back into acting. I took acting classes in Chicago. I missed it so much. I wasn’t really doing anything, just like a musical and another play. I felt I needed to do something with my life; that’s why I decided to move to New York. I moved almost three years ago, and since I moved here and started acting everything has been in Spanish. Ever since I got here I’ve felt very humble and thankful with God and life for giving me this amazing opportunity to do what I love to do. I don’t know how it is in English, but in Spanish a lot of the actors don’t get paid for their work. They do it for people to get to know you. Yeah, for exposure, I get it. It’s the same in English. Yeah, you want everyone to know you: Maybe in the future you’re going to get a better job. In the beginning I was working like that. After two years I decided that I was not just doing this; I needed to start taking care of my work, to value my work,

so I started to get paid for some. I’m in a better company now. They are actually paying me. It’s the best company in New York called Repertorio Español. I’m also working in another play that is opening next week at the Producers’ Club. It’s opening May 7 through May 10 called “El Barco Ebrio.” Do you also sing and dance? No, I just act. I also have a show this Friday and next Wednesday with Repertorio. The thing is with Repertorio, we do shows the whole year. The show with my company we are doing May 20. 10 things that you should know about Paul Montoya: 1) My birthday is on December 24 (Christmas Eve). 2) My favorite color is Yellow like SpongeBob. 3) My favorite food is Bandeja Paisa (Colombian dish), even though I love sushi. 4) I absolutely love Skittles. 5) I have one tattoo (means eternity) on my back. 6) I am a nerd about super heroes and comic movies. 7) One of my biggest dreams would be to be part of one of Pedro Almodovar’s films. 8) I have a really huge family (I have 8 siblings)! My mom is one of my best friends. 9) I’m a dreamer 10) I’m a very shy and quiet person, and people always think that I’m just rude. Maliibu N HeleneThis brand new duet is composed of South Bronx rapper Maliibu Miitch and professional dancer Helene. Their current single “Figure 8” produced by DJ Mustard has just been released as a video, and their new EP on Island Records will be followed shortly by an album. I caught them in between performances at the Ritz and at Feathers, and they were absolutely the cutest things ever, both with big personalities and a lot of energy.

So how did the two of you meet, and what inspired you to become a duet?

Maliibu: We actually met through management, and they put us together with the label. Helene was already in California, and they flew me out, and I met her .

So how did you know you were going to like each other and be able to work together? Maliibu: Oh, we didn’t know. It was kind of weird. She was in a girl group before, and I was already a solo artist. At first we were both weirded out by it and didn’t want to do it. Then after we just started talking and we had studio time out there,

and we were together a lot, that’s when we both figured, “Oh, I kind of like you!” So are you two based out of LA right this minute? Maliibu: No, I’m from New York - South Bronx. Helene: And I’m in California. I’m originally from New Jersey, but I’ve lived in California for five years now

Page 21: Get Out! Str8 Magazine – Issue 9/1 – June 2015 | CHEYENNE ELLIOTT

How do you work long distance? Maliibu: Actually, I just came back from LA. I left this December, and I was actually out in LA for a whole year. We shot our videos out there, and I just recently came back. So Maliibu, what exactly do you do? Maliibu: I rap. I’ve been rapping for four or five years. Helene, how did you get your start? Helene: I’m also a professional dancer. I started dancing when I was three. I did musical theatre while growing up. I was one of those audition kids that came to New York to audition for Broadway. I decided I wanted to do the whole Beyoncé thing, so I did a demo when I was 12 in California. I was assigned to a producer, and that’s what got me to move out to California. Then I was in a girl group for two years. Then the girl group got dropped. Everything happens for a reason, and that proves why I’m with Maliibu now, and I am very happy. You’re currently working on an EP. Is that correct? Maliibu: We’re actually finished with the EP and are halfway through the album. Within the first month of meeting each other, we finished the EP, and we’re working on the album. Helene: Seriously, our single “Figure 8,” that was the first song we ever recorded, and our whole EP kind of followed after that. It kind of tells a story of our relationship. It gets crazy, but our EP is awesome. Maliibu: We’re not just pop, we’re not just R & B, we’re not just urban – we don’t like to put a title on it, you know. We got our own sound. It’s Maliibu and Helene’s sound. Is there ever a time that you don’t agree on something? Maliibu: No, we actually

haven’t had that yet. Helene: It’s really surprising. We get along fine. I think it’s because of our work ethic, and we both have the same goal, and we love what we do. It’s not work to us; we’re just having fun. Basically we’re just going through it together. Maliibu: We just talk about our day. So you’ve been together a year? Maliibu: Yes, it’s our year anniversary. Happy anniversary! Are you touring to support the video and single? Maliibu: We’re doing our radio promos right now, our radio run. Helene: Our music video is on Vevo now. You hear the song and it’s a great feel, but I feel that when you watch the video you get an even better feel. We are complete opposites, and you see how it works. You wouldn’t think so, but it does; Maliibu comes through really great on it. It’s just really a fun video to shoot. We’re excited to have people see us for the real people we are. What’s the craziest thing that has happened to you since you’ve been together as a duo? Maliibu: We did a little high school tour, and it got completely shut down. I guess I was twerking too good at the school and the principal came and shut it down. Helene: When we were shooting our video, we shot it in a laundromat, and it wasn’t closed down, so

people could still do their laundry. We’re singing, and an old man with his cane just literally walked through. We’re trying to keep straight faces. We’re like, “Does he not see what we’re doing?” Where do you wanna be in five years? Maliibu: Traveling the world. If you could perform anywhere, where would you want it to be? Maliibu: Philippines. Helene: Spain. Is there anything else you would like to mention? Helene: We just want to get awareness to our single, “Figure 8.” It was a really fun record that we did together. We want everybody to hear it. Twitter: @maliibunhelene facebook.com/MaliibunHelene
