Congratulations on gaining your place at Edge Hill University – we arelooking forward to welcoming you here.

This Getting Started Guide will help you prepare for your time at University. Pleaseread all of the sections carefully as they contain important information about yourarrival at Edge Hill. Money Matters

Now is the time to make sure that all of your loans andgrants are in place for your studies. This will ensurethat you receive your funding on time and yourtransition to University life runs smoothly.

Applying for student financeIf you have not yet applied for student finance, youshould get in touch with the appropriate funding body.Eligible full-time undergraduate and PGCE studentscan apply for support with tuition fees and the costof living during their time at university. Go togov.uk/student-finance to apply.

AssessmentIf you have already completed your application, youshould receive an assessment of the funding availablefor you. This can take up to 8 weeks to be processed. Ifyou have yet to receive your assessment, make surethat you check on the progress of your application assoon as possible.

Return your DeclarationIf you applied online, you will receive a Declarationform in the post. You need to return your signedDeclaration form as soon as possible in order to makesure your funding is released.

Student Finance: Your next steps

Check your detailsOnce you have received your financial notification, you should check that all ofyour details are correct. This includes:• the University you will be studying at• the course you will be studying• the tuition fee for your course

Inform your Student Finance body of any changes as soon as possible to avoiddelays in releasing your funding.

When will I receive my funding?You need to complete your enrolment to release your student funding. Once youhave enrolled, it can take up to five working days for the money to arrive in youraccount or longer if you applied for funding late.

Make sure that you bring all paperwork and your Student Finance login detailswith you so that any problems can be resolved as quickly as possible.

ScholarshipsIf you are eligible for an Edge Hill Scholarship or a National Scholarship, youwill be contacted directly with further information.

Confirm your accommodation

If you have received a place in our on-campus halls of residence, there are a fewthings you need to take care of before you can move in. Getting the paperworkand financial arrangements out of the way before you arrive will make yourWelcome Sunday as relaxing and enjoyable as possible.

You should have received an email from our Accommodation Team to confirmyour room and provide you with your Licence Agreement. You must sign yourLicence Agreement and return it to the Accommodation Office as soonas possible to confirm your room. You will also need to pay your £150 depositto secure your room and make arrangements to pay for your accommodation.

You can move into halls on Sunday 22 September 2013, or Welcome Sundayas we call it. You’ll find more information about arrival arrangements for thisday on page 16 but you should put the date in your calendar in the meantime.

Get ready for First Week

Starting University is an exciting time. First Week is all about settling into youracademic and social environment, meeting your tutors, making friends andgenerally finding your way around. As well as providing an introduction to yourcourse, there will be opportunities to find out how to make best use of the Libraryand IT systems, and the full range of student support services available to you.

First Week runs from Monday 23 to Friday 27 September 2013.

Your Faculty will organise your First Week programme for your course. FirstWeek is a living and learning experience and comprises a series of activities towelcome you to the University and to introduce you to your academic life. Pleasenote that First Week is compulsory for all students and the most important thingis that you participate fully and have a good time. You are required to attend allyour course-based sessions, but which social activities you choose is up to you.

First Week Timetable Your First Week timetable is available from edgehill.ac.uk/gettingstarted.Select your course from the drop-down menu and click the ‘First Week’ tab todownload and print your individual timetable. Copies will also be available fromthe New Student Desk in the Hub from 8.30am each day during First Week.

Arrival and Enrolment (Residential Students)

Welcome Sunday is our designated day for residential students to arriveon campus, enrol and move into accommodation. It’s a very busy day on campusso, to ensure your day runs as smoothly as possible, please follow theinstructions outlined in this section.

Arriving at Edge HillOnce you arrive at Edge Hill, you will be able to enrol for your programme andcollect the keys to your accommodation before settling into your new home andmeeting your flatmates.

Welcome Sunday takes place on Sunday 22 September 2013. Unfortunately,you are not able to arrive on campus any earlier than this date. If you will beunable to arrive until after 6pm on Welcome Sunday or not until the followingweek (First Week), please contact the Accommodation Team [email protected] for advice.

In order to reduce congestion, we have staggered student arrival timesalphabetically by surname. Please try and keep to your scheduled arrival timeas much as possible to avoid congestion on the day.

To help the day to run as smoothly as possible please do not arrive morethan 30 minutes before your scheduled arrival time. Once you haveenrolled and collected your keys you will be directed to your halls of residence.

Travelling to Welcome SundayWhether you are travelling to Welcome Sunday by car or public transport, thereare arrangements in place to make the move as easy as possible.

Arriving by Car

Please note, car parking on campus is limited.

On Welcome Sunday you may bring one car on campus (no vans please) and youwill be directed to a parking space. To avoid traffic congestion, there is a maximum2 hour time limit on parking to allow you to unload your car and unpack.

After this time we request that you move your car to allow other students theopportunity to park and move in. You will be directed to alternative parking innearby Ormskirk town centre and there is a free bus service from Ormskirk BusStation to and from the University running every 15 minutes from 7.30am until6.30pm. You can find a map of Ormskirk with advice on where to park atedgehill.ac.uk/getting started under the ‘Arrivals’ tab.

Please note there are parking restrictions in the area immediately surroundingthe University.

Please note that Yellow AA™ road signage will be displayed on theapproach to the campus. Please follow these directional signs to thedesignated entrance for your halls, as GPS systems may lead you tothe incorrect entrance point.

Find your Entrance Point

All students and visitors should arrive at the allocated entrance point for yourparticular halls of residence. Entrances 1 and 2 are on St Helens Road andentrance 3 is on Ruff Lane.

The University entrance you must use will depend on which halls of residenceyou are living in:

What happens next?Once you have parked, you must leave your belongings in the car, andmake your way to the Faculty of Health and Social Care on foot to completeyour enrolment process and collect your room key.

When you have completed this process you will be issued with your ‘Unicard’(your Edge Hill student ID card) and you will be directed back to unload yourcar and move into halls.

Arriving by Public TransportYou can find out more about arriving at Edge Hill by public transport, includingdirections for bus or rail travel at edgehill.ac.uk/location. Please see themap of Ormskirk town centre at edgehill.ac.uk/getting started under the‘Arrivals’ tab. and our Campus Map at the back of this booklet to find outwhere you will need to travel on and off campus.

On Welcome Sunday, our free Edge Link bus runs from Ormskirk Bus Stationto the University every 15 minutes from 7.30am until 6.30pm. The Edge Linkbus will drop you off near the main entrance to the University. From here, youshould make your way to the Senior Common Room in the Main Buildingwhere there is a secure luggage facility for students arriving by public transport.You are able to leave your bags in this safe spot while you enrol and collect yourroom keys.

After dropping off your bags, you must then make your way to the Faculty ofHealth and Social Care to complete your enrolment and key collection. Onceyou have completed your enrolment, you will be directed back to the SeniorCommon Room to collect your belongings and move into your new home.

Accommodation FeesOnce you have enrolled, there are a few things you need to take care of beforeyou can collect your keys.

You must pay your £150 deposit in full and either set up a payment plan for youraccommodation fees or pay in full before arrival on Welcome Sunday.Otherwise, the Accommodation Team will be unable to issue you with yourroom key.

To make your payment or set up your recurring card payment using a visa debitor credit card visit edgehill.ac.uk/payments. You can pay in one of three ways:

• In full, with a 5% discount if you pay the full amount before you collect your key• In three instalments (per term)*• In seven instalments (monthly)

*Most students pay in this way as it coincides with student loan payments.

Paying in instalmentsThe total balance for the duration of your Licence Agreement (40 weeks oragreed fixed term), is divided into three or seven equal instalments and must bepaid by recurring card payments on the listed dates.

Moving inOnce you have completed your enrolment and key collection, you will be directedback to your car or the Senior Common Room to collect your belongings andmove into your new accommodation.

Due to car parking limitations, your car must remain in yourdesignated car park. It is not possible to move it closer to your Hallsof Residence to drop off your belongings.

Meet staff within your DepartmentOnce you have completed your enrolment, you must make your way to thelocation stated below to meet the staff within your Department. This is a greatway to meet your tutors and fellow students on your programme.

Staff will be available inthe Faculty of Healthand Social Care onthe main receptionfrom 12.00pm until4.00pm.

Important: If you complete yourenrolment and keycollection earlier than12.00pm you mustreturn to the Faculty ofHealth and Social Careafter you have movedin.

Important: You are advised to pack your belongings in crates andsuitcases with wheels and to avoid packing large heavy boxes that you willfind difficult to carry. There is a limited supply of trolleys and buggiesavailable to help you transport your belongings. Please speak to a memberof staff for assistance.

Please note that you may be required to walk some distance from the carpark to your halls of residence. If you require assistance or have mobilityrequirements please contact [email protected] or 01695584455 for advice. When you arrive please go to the nearest WelcomePoint, where staff will arrange transport for you.

Frequently Asked Questions about Welcome Sunday

What happens when I arrive and where do I collect my keys?Once you have parked, you must leave your belongings in the car, or if you aretravelling by public transport, in the Staff Common Room. Please follow directionsto the Faculty of Health and Social Care to complete your enrolment/keycollection process.

When you have completed this process you will be issued with your ‘Unicard’(student ID card) and you will be directed back to unload your car, or collectyour belongings and move in.

Is there anywhere that my family can wait while I enrol?Yes, there will be a Family Area in the Faculty of Health and Social Carewith complimentary tea or coffee and newspapers. Your family are welcome touse this as a meeting point during the day or somewhere to relax.

What should I do if there is a problem with my room?If there is an issue with your room please contact the FM Helpdesk on 01695584455. The FM Helpdesk will be available throughout the day, and duringyour time at University.

Where can I collect /purchase my NUS Extra card?If you have pre ordered your NUS Extra Student Discount card online thenyou will be able to collect your card from the SU Reception in the Hub. If youhaven’t pre ordered a card you can purchase them on the day or viacards.nusextra.co.uk.

Admission and EnrolmentIf you have met all conditions of your offer, your offer status will show asUnconditional (UF) on UCAS or GTTR Track, giving you the green light forenrolment. However, if you still have outstanding conditions to meet you canfind further information on your next steps below.

PGCE students:You need to hold an Unconditional offer of a place to enrol. If you are holding aConditional offer and have outstanding academic conditions (includingProfessional Skills Tests) to meet, you will not be able to enrol until you supplyevidence that these requirements have been met. You can check the status ofyour offer on GTTR Track at any time. If your offer is still Conditional when thetime comes to enrol, you are advised not to travel to enrolment and to seekguidance from the Admissions Team on 0800 028 6677. You should stillattend all of the course-based activities and you will be able to enrol at a laterdate once you have met the academic criteria.

All students:If there are other outstanding conditions associated with your offer of a place,such as medical or DBS clearance, you will be able to provisionally enrol andyou should attend your enrolment session and other First Week activities asindicated. However, you will be expected to meet any outstanding requirementspromptly and you could be withdrawn from your course if these conditions arenot satisfied as soon as possible. You will also be unable to undertake anyplacement activity without medical or DBS clearance.

Clearing Students:If you have been made an offer through Clearing you should carefully read theinstructions you have received from Admissions and ensure that you complywith any conditions or deadlines set. Failure to do so could mean that you willbe unable to enrol.

Sustainable TravelEdge Hill University encourages staff, students and visitors to travel here bysustainable means wherever possible and has developed a Travel Plan to includevarious sustainable travel initiatives.

The University provides a free shuttle bus to link the campus to Ormskirk towncentre, where other public transport options are available. For furtherinformation please visit edgehill.ac.uk/sustainability/travel.

Parking PermitsParking is limited at Edge Hill University and only available to parking permitholders. Eligibility criteria applies for all parking permit applications and fulldetails are available in our Car Parking Policy atedgehill.ac.uk/sustainability/travel.

If you are a student coming to study at Edge Hill for the first time, you will needto formally enrol on your course and receive your student number before youcan apply for your official permit. Prior to your enrolment day, you will besupplied with a temporary parking permit to allow you access to the campus tocomplete your enrolment. Following enrolment you will be directed to apply foryour parking permit online.

If you are eligible, a blue student parking permit will be provided which willallow you to park in the Blue Zone i.e. the main car park. Other car parks arereserved for staff and visitors.

Residential students are not permitted to keep their cars on campus unlessstudying on a course which requires them to undertake a placement.

PostThe University has a dedicated post room on-site which handles all internal andexternal mail, around 800,000 items of post per year.

We provide a student mail delivery service to the mail boxes located in all Hallsof Residence. We also provide a parcel collection service where students arenotified of a delivery via email.

The Post Room is located in The Durning Centre and is open for parcelcollections at the following times: Monday to Thursday: 8.00am – 10.00am,12.00pm – 1.00pm and 5.00pm – 8.00pm. Friday: 8.00am – 10.00am and12.00pm – 1.00pm.

LaunderetteOur on-site launderette houses nineteen automatic washing machines andtwenty dryers. The opening times are 7.30am to 9.00pm every day.

CateringWhether it’s a quick coffee and a catch up, lunch between lectures or a late nighttreat, you are sure to find just what your taste buds are looking for from our wideselection of on-site coffee bars, cafes, diner and restaurant.

All dining outlets at Edge Hill University have social spaces in which to eat andstudy as well as free wireless internet access.

If you are living on campus you can also take advantage of the meal plan scheme,or if you are self-catering, the University shops stock all essential items you couldneed.

RetailThere is an on-site McColls convenience store and the University Shop, both ofwhich sell food, drink, stationery and household items to cater for our residentialstudents.

In addition, the University is located close to Ormskirk town centre where you willfind other shops and amenities. Edge Hill University provides a regular free Edge Linkshuttle bus which connects the campus to Ormskirk town centre. Learning ServicesLearning Services provide learning resource centres and information provision,learning support, ICT user support for learning and teaching, eLearningdevelopment and support, media services, study skills and support for studentswith Specific Learning Difficulties (eg. Learning Services provide help and support with library and media resources,study spaces and 24/7 IT access as well as a range of guidance and support foracademic and research skills, help with accessing books and journals and alsothe development of Learning Edge, your virtual learning space.

RoadVia the M6 North and South junction 26, then onto the M58, junction 3, takingthe A570 towards Southport and Ormskirk. The Campus can also be reachedfrom Preston or Liverpool via the A59.

If using a satellite navigation system, you can enter L39 4QP as your destinationpostcode for a direct route. Please ensure that your journey will bring you to theUniversity's Main Entrance on St Helens Road.

Edge Link BusThe University operates the free Edge Link bus service between the Campus andOrmskirk bus station every twenty minutes from 8.05am until 8.56pm, Mondayto Friday excluding Bank Holidays, and 8.05am until 5.56pm on Saturdays. Theservice is free on production on a valid Unicard.

Parking on campusThe University recognised the need to reduce pollution and congestion byminimising the reliance on cars and promoting the benefits of sustainable travel.Residential students are not permitted to bring cars on campus unless this isnecessary during placement activities and commuting students are advised touse public transport whenever possible.

If you do need to use your car, a valid permit must be displayed to park. You willbe able to seek advice and apply for a permit during First Week.
