Approach (1)

10/04/2023

• Advocacy to senior management and worker representatives that a social investment (OHS) can become a business investment. ( MoU 07/2009 )

• Holistic quality management approach towards OHS which is maintained and managed by the shipyard.

• Underpinned by rigorous performance monitoring and policies to provide strategic direction to the management and OHS programme management team.

Approach (2)

10/04/2023

• Introducing simple and effective preventive measures to ensure safety, i.e. awareness campaigns, distribution of industrial protective clothing, and medical examination at start of employment and on yearly basis.

• Expansion of first aid station to a comprehensive care center (e.g. integration of approaches to occupational medicine, health care of the neighboring community)

• A PPP with MoHFW: use of infrastructure vs. qualified medical staff and medicines and vaccines

• Defining milestones and setting objectives (international certification and beyond).

Results

10/04/2023

• Injury rate reduced by 99% from baseline data (i.e. from more than 1000 injuries to less than 10 per month)

• WMS is the first shipyard, and one of the few businesses in Bangladesh to acquire international certifications in Occupational Health & Safety (OHSAS 18001) and Environmental Waste Management (ISO 14001), this will increase their competitiveness, market positioning thus profitability.

• Additional benefits are reduction in medical costs and property damage, loss of working hours due to injuries, as well as increased workers’ morale and more efficient production processes.

• Through a PPP between the MoHFW & WMS health services are provided to 25.000 members in the nearby community.
