Girls on the Run® - Who We Are

Our Mission

To inspire girls to be joyful, healthy and

confident using a fun experience-based curriculum that creatively

integrates running

Our Vision We envision a world where every girl

knows and activates her limitless potential and is free to boldly pursue

her dreams

Our Program

Girls on the Run® is a life-changing, interactive learning program for 8-14 year old girls that uses the power of running to strengthen the way girls see themselves and their opportunities. The program is dedicated to keeping them out of the “girl box,” a place where preoccupation with appearance and anxiety over being liked keeps them from fulfilling their true potential and puts them at risk for substance abuse, depression, eating disorders, and peer pressure issues. Offered each Fall and Spring, the curriculum combines self-esteem enhancing games, discussions and workouts with training for a 5K (3.1 mile) event and participation in a community service project. Girls exit the program with a stronger sense of identity and a greater acceptance of themselves as they prepare to face the upcoming pressures of adolescence.

Why Support for Girls on the Run is Critically Necessary

Some sad facts about girls today: • Three million young Americans seriously considered suicide in 2000 and of those, over 1

million tried to kill themselves. • Idaho has the 4th highest suicide rate, 67% higher than the national average. • Girls were twice as likely as boys to report contemplating suicide. • Body dissatisfaction and dietary restraints are predictors of depression in girls. • Almost two-thirds of girls in 5th-12th grades are dissatisfied with their body shape and

want to lose weight. • Girls as young as 5 form negative self-images based on their weight.

If you want to help change that, here’s some good news:

• Girls who participate in physical activities are 40% less likely to smoke, have higher levels of self-esteem, better body images, and lower levels of depression.

• Girls who have experienced emotional trauma respond positively to physical fitness programs.

• Girls who participate in physical activities have higher self-esteem and therefore less likely to engage in risky sexual behavior during adolescence.

• Girls who participate in physical exercise have higher self-esteem and therefore have better relationships with adults, get better grades, are less likely to use drugs and are less depressed than girls who don’t.

Page 3: Girls on the Run Partnership opportunities & benefits

And the best news, if she’s involved with Girls on the Run:

• She has higher self-esteem;** • She has improved eating attitudes;** • She has an improved body image;** • She has a positive peer group setting where important issues are addressed in a

productive and research based manner • She has positive role models in her mentor coaches.

**According to research conducted by Dr. Rita DeBate, Ph.D., MPH, CHES, assistant professor in the department of Health Behavior at UNC-Charlotte, the Girls on the Run Curricula improve girls self-esteem, body image and eating attitudes to a “statistically significant” extent.

Our Sponsorship Philosophy & Opportunities

Our commitment to you, the sponsor, is to host professional, high-quality events and youth programs to which your company can be associated. Through these events and programs, we strive to cultivate community spirit as well as generate interest, awareness and increased exposure for your products and services. Your sponsorship sends a powerful message of support for healthy living for the youth and families of our community. Sponsorship opportunities can include one or more of the following distinct areas of the entire Girls on the Run® program: Fall & Spring program, Girls on the Run Community 5k & Healthy Living Expo, Lunafest Film Festival, and the Hailey Turkey Trot 5k. Details about each of these areas are outline below and their associated benefits. Our sponsorship opportunities range from allowing you to focus your to a particular event to having exposure across all that GOTR does!

Where Does Your Money Go?

Sponsorship monies go to support our Girls on the Run® program in the Wood River Valley in the following ways:

• Scholarships - Girls on the Run® is offered to all girls regardless of their ability to pay. On average 50% of our fees are covered by scholarship in 2014. Your sponsorship helps us offer the funds necessary to insure all girls are able to participate.

• Curriculum - Girls on the Run® uses well-researched and proven curriculum that is implemented nationally across 180 different councils. Your sponsorship helps to supply and maintain the materials necessary to implement each of the 20 lessons in this curriculum.

• Overhead – Although Girls on the Run® is primarily volunteer-based, we have necessary overhead costs to keep our program running. These costs include t-shirts for each participant, liability insurance, licensing fees, individual site expenses, coach training and background checks, and administration. Your sponsorship helps to ensure these expenses can be met to keep our program running efficiently.

Girls on the Run® of the Wood River Valley is a non-profit, 501c3 organization. Your contributions are fully tax deductible. To learn more about this exciting and effective program giving girls the opportunity to laugh, run, and learn to address the issues girls face everyday, please contact Mary Fauth, Executive Director, at 208.788.7863, [email protected].

GIRLS ON THE RUN COMMUNITY 5K & HEALTHY

LIVING EXPO In this event, the finish line is only the beginning…

Saturday, May 16, 2015 Heagle Park, Della View Subdivision, Hailey, Idaho

Race start time: 9:30 am; Healthy Living Expo: 9:30 – 12:00 pm

The Girls on the Run Community 5K Fun Run and Healthy Living Expo is much more than just a running event. It is a multigenerational event for our entire community and encourages all to participate as runners, walkers, organizers, volunteers and spectators. With limited events of this type in our area that encourage participation of families and all ages and abilities, we believe this to be a great opportunity to promote healthy living and fitness in a positive, fun-filled environment.

In 2012 we introduced a “Corporate Team” challenge that was a success! Teams of 5 employees from local businesses competed for the “Best Spirit” award and the chance to each win a Garmin GPS watch. The Challenge will return in 2015 with even more fun and opportunity for camaraderie for your organization. The Healthy Living Expo includes booths of health-related information and activities from a variety of community organizations, including yourself, that share in a common goal to bring togetherness and a true sense of celebration, education, and fun. This will be our 12th annual event and past participants number between 300-400. We anticipate these numbers again this

year. We feel we are meeting a community need as families and individuals come together to participate in a fun, healthy, activity-filled morning. Your sponsorship sends a powerful message of support for healthy living and for the youth and families of our community.

Connecting Women Through Film – a benefit for Girls on the Run of the Wood River Valley

Thursday, November 6, 2015 nexStage Theater, Ketchum

Reception & Silent Auction 6:00 p.m. Film Showing 7:00 p.m.

LUNAFEST®, the fundraising film festival dedicated to promoting awareness about women's issues, highlighting women filmmakers, and bringing women together in their communities, will be hosted by Girls on the Run of the Wood River Valley. This unique film festival highlights women as leaders in society, illustrated through nine short films by women filmmakers. The films range from animation to fictional drama, and cover topics such as women’s health, motherhood, body image, aging, cultural diversity and breaking barriers. Sponsor will not only be supporting Girls on the Run’s efforts to bring a thought-provoking film event to the Community, but help showcase the Girls on the Run program to the general public in a unique way. At each event our annual “End Girl to Girl Bullying” essay contest winner reads her winning essay, sharing her words and encouragement gained through the Girls on the Run program. Opportunities to not only give monetary donations, but also in-kind donations, are listed below.
