Dear families, Home School Communication and School Wide Positive Behaviour Support (SWPBS) Lisa Maxwell, our Assistant Principal, is providing an update on SWPBS today. One of the strengths of SWPBS is the school working with parents to provide consistent messages and education around their children’s personal and social learning. There may be times when we need to contact you regarding your child’s behaviour. Alternatively your child may come home with a narrative about a behaviour incident that was followed up by a staff member as a result of conflict in the yard. What will be your reaction? When parents support the school with our strategies for positive behaviours your child receives consistent messages about the importance of the values and how these lead to a safe, positive school environment for all students. This may be a significant opportunity for learning for your child; we all make mistakes but must take responsibility for our actions. Teaching the social capabilities enables your child to develop consideration for others, empathy and collaboration skills which are life-long abilities in interacting with others and building friendships. This learning is as important as their literacy and numeracy learning to support them to develop positive connections and relationships in their home, school and community and grow to be considerate, contributing citizens. Smiles on Site Dental Van After notifying you that the dental van would not be on site until next term, they were able to fix their vehicle and will be here over the next two weeks. Consideration of the timetable will be taken into account when your child has their appointment especially for students in Years 3 and 5 doing NAPLAN.
School Canteen and our Healthy Together Victoria Achievement Program
One of the school council sub-committees is our Canteen Committee. We reference the Department of Education Healthy Canteen Kit to support students to make healthy food choices at school and through life. The Kit contains a number of resources including the School Canteens and Other School Food Services Policy to assist schools to develop healthy canteens and other food services.
The policy has guiding principles, including food selection, food categories, food safety and the role of school council in developing a school food services policy. This school-level policy applies to food services within the school environment, for example school events such as celebrations and sports days. We will be asking parents in the coming weeks to have input into modifications of our menu. For a copy of the policy, see the: Healthy Canteen Kit
Other school council sub-committees include Education, Facilities and Finance. If you would like to become a member of the Canteen Committee or our other committees - Education or Facilities - please contact the school.
I hope all of our mums have a great day on Sunday.
Julie Soutter Principal

Friday 29th June
Dear families, Wellbeing On Friday, a team of staff attended our second full day professional development session on School Wide Positive Behaviour Support (SWPBS). The key components to SWPBS is it is a school based approach with consultation at various points with staff, students and parents which provides a sustainable approach for the school. The school collects data about every day school life with a focus on wellbeing aspects such as attendance, conflict and social interactions. This tells us what we are doing well, what’s not working and what needs more work. By referring to the data, this allows us to put an action plan together to develop shared priorities and work together for change. The wellbeing team met this week to work on our next focus and work. We have our values finalised and with consultation with staff and students have almost chosen our school motto which will be shared with the community in the near future. Our main focus of work is incorporating the school values (Caring, Respect, Resilience, Responsibility and Personal Best) and creating a whole school matrix based on the expected behaviours from staff, students and community. Once staff and students have provided input, this will be communicated and consulted with parents through our Education and Policy Sub Committee. Our students continue to be exposed to the various wellbeing supports and resources available through our Social,
Emotional Learning program including Bully Stoppers, Berry Street, Resilience, Rights and Respectful Relationships.
Year 7 Placement Application Could all families of Year 6 students please ensure they have returned their Year 7 Placement Application forms to school by tomorrow, indicating which school you will be applying to, whether government or private. It is important that we are given these details to fulfil our responsibilities in ensuring all children secure a place in a secondary school for 2019, and to ensure students are exited at the end of the year to the correct secondary school. (NB: Student VSN numbers can be found on school reports). Student Absences Thank you to those families who are notifying the school promptly on the day of a student absence. Please don ’t hesitate to contact the school office should you require assistance with utilising the Parent Portal. Going to school every day is the single most important part of your child’s education, they learn new things every day – missing school puts them behind. We will continue to send reminders to parents via email this term for any unexplained absences to allow parents time to get in the habit of notifying the school.
Wishing all our mums a very happy Mother’s Day for Sunday. Regards, Lisa Maxwell

CHALK TALK
“Squawk, squawk” goes the cute, tiny, lovable fairy penguins. As we sat down on the seats, the bright moon rose delicately while the sky turns to a world of stars and deep black sky. The fairy penguins waddle out in groups, cautious for danger while running into the grass, seeking the safety of their burrows.—Sam V
As I pull the rope, I feel a whoosh and a blast of freedom. I fly across the air! I let go of the rope and hold my arms out like a bird. I also felt tempted to go upside down, no handed, so I did it! - Cooper E
Plop! As you pull the rope, it’s hard to fit in a breath. My heart thumps as fast as a running cheetah. I hug the rope like I haven't seen my dad in years. I swing from side to side, it feels like I’m flying.—Archie A
At the penguin parade we saw a big goose with a green beak. Before the fairy penguins came out of the water, we saw the moon rise and it wasn’t just a moon, it was a blood moon. When the penguins came out they waddled back home.—Ruby F
Splish, splish, splosh, the water was magical. I walked across the tan, brown boardwalk. I could feel the great, misty water on my shoulders. Zali G
I smell the rubber rocks as I climb them. I hear the mechanical wall squeaking as it moves. I see everybody have a good try on the mechanical wall. I taste the sweat around my mouth. I feel the rocky rocks and the wall.— Holly N

In our science experiment we created foam. It was slimy, disgusting and gooey. I thought how it could explode. I could not touch it because if you did it would burn your skin and eyes. Benson
In our science experiment we created foam. It was amazing, exciting and foamy. I thought the yeast looked cool, the foam looked cool and the experiment was cool too. Ash

NAPLAN NAPLAN will be taking place next week from Tuesday - Thursday in Years 3 and 5. It is important for parents to treat this week the same as any other to ensure students do not become anxious over the testing period. Avoiding media hype is recommended. We ask our parents to be extra mindful of student punctuality on these days to support test delivery. It is important to note that whilst used as a diagnostic tool for schools to analyse collective trends, NAPLAN only provides a single snapshot of individual student performance and is therefore just one method utilised to assess student outcomes. NAPLAN results will be sent home to families when they become available later in the school year.
