2017 KNIGHT OF CELEBRATIONThis year’s Knight of Celebration was held on May 26, 2017, giving members of our community a chance to celebrate Canada’s 150th birthday with food, fun and fireworks. This year saw the best turnout we’ve ever had for this annual event!

Next year’s Knight of Celebration will be held May 25, 2018. More information on the program of events will be posted on our website at www.norberry-glenlee.ca in early May. We hope to see you there!

Volunteer Appreciation & Awards – This event also serves as a venue where we thank all of our coaches for their past service over the last year. Coaches and managers meals are free to show our appreciation, and we also invite past Lifetime Builders Award winners to come back and reminisce with their friends.

The Cory Anderson Sportsmanship award was handed out to the U12 Boys Indoor Soccer team as well as our Vice President of Programs, Geordie MacKenzie. Congratulations to our honorees!

Volunteer of the Year Award – This year’s Volunteer of the Year award was presented to Nikki Palmer, for her dedication to Mini Soccer, which is the biggest program NGCC operates.

BASKETBALL Basketball at NGCC is administered by the Winnipeg Minor Basketball Association. The fall league, which runs from mid-October to mid-March, is open to boys and girls ages 5-18. There are no ‘tryouts’ for club basketball as we make up teams in the area based on the number of players registered. The league holds its games weekends along with one practice during weeknights.

For more information visit the NGCC website at: www.norberry-glenlee.ca/Basketball_FallWinter_Session.aspx and the WMBA home page at www.wmba.ca/.

HOCKEYThis is our biggest fall program for boys and girls from 4-21 years of age. The program includes House League for 4-8 year olds and a Direct Entry League for those 9 and up. More information is available on our website at www.norberry-glenlee.ca/Hockey.aspx.

We are members of the St. Vital Minor Hockey Association (stvitalhockey.ca) and play under the Hockey Winnipeg banner (hockeywinnipeg.ca).

Registration is now open and will close August 20. Visit www.stvitalhockey.ca for more information and to register.

JUNIOR INDOOR SOCCERWe have our own Indoor Soccer program for players (6-9). This program will be held in our gym on Tuesdays from 4:45-5:45 pm. Fall Session is 10 weeks in length (October 3 – December 5) and is taught by Fred Van Dongen.

YOUTH INDOOR SOCCERIndoor Soccer for 9-18 years old runs from October to March in various indoor soccer pitches across the City. More information is available here www.norberry-glenlee.ca/Indoor_Soccer.aspx

All interested dancers are welcome, young, old and every age in between can come dance, socialize and enjoy themselves. Come solo or as a couple. Easy to follow instructions by a professionally trainer caller.

Dance for the fun of it! Modern square dance is a healthy activity. It helps to burn calories and assists in cardiovascular conditioning. You could call it therapy for the mind. One of the biggest benefits associated with square dancing is that it builds friendships and provides you with an opportunity to socialize.

Cost is only $3.50 per person per evening (payable at the door) plus a small annual membership fee (presently $13.00/person).

“Dancing is when walking becomes poetry”

BRIDGE CLUBThe Wednesday Bridge Club is an informal group of card players that meets Wednesdays at the Norberry site. Games run from 12:30 to about 3:00. The cost is $2.00 per player and there are no age restrictions or membership dues. Everyone is welcome!

LUNCH WITH SANTAThis year’s event will take place on Sunday, December 3rd in the Main Hall and Gym at the Norberry site. There will be face painting, crafts, coloring, a balloon artist and of course, Santa himself bringing treats for all in attendance. Cost is minimal and this event is really popular!

NEED SPACE FOR A SOCIAL FUNCTION? WE HAVE THE PLACE FOR YOU!Planning to hold a social? A shower? A birthday party? NGCC offers 3 facility rentals that meet all your needs.

For weddings, socials and larger events our Social Hall can host up to 250 people. Rental packages include music man, corkage, bartender service, snacks and social food.

Smaller events for up to 40 people can be held in our Multi-Purpose Room, a bright and spacious facility with kitchenette.

Our gymnasium is also available for rental, and may be combined with the Multi-Purpose Room for party events.

More information including photographs and rental rates is available on our website at www.norberry-glenlee.ca/Rentals.aspx – or you can call our main office at 204-256-6654 to inquire.

CARMELLE’S CORNERSo far 2017 has been a great year for NGCC! We saw some major renovations at both sites completed with funding from GCWCC’s Renovation Grant and the Canada 150 Grant as well. All this just makes our great centre look even better!

New this spring registration was our first full scale use of the Sign Up.com program that the City of Winnipeg arranged for the CC’s to access. We used it for our Volunteer program, and other than a couple of glitches that were worked out quickly, the program worked great from an administrative view, and a user perspective also. Everyone I talked to found it easy to use and the auto

reminders helped everyone out! The number of “no shows” at events were down significantly, and refund cheques were mailed out quickly after each event.

Sadly this year, we lost one of our founding members. Walter Jennings was one of the driving forces behind Glenlee CC and served on the Board for 40+ years. He was one of the main reasons that we always had money in the bank and was a financially sound CC, and his wisdom carried over to the NGCC Boards that we have had in the past and present. Walter was 99 years old when he passed and we will miss him.

Hopefully everyone is enjoying their summer...don’t forget to register early for fall sports!

Carmelle Remillard – Executive Assistant

KEVIN’S SPECIAL OPS We’ve made a lot of important improvements this year to our facilities at both the Norberry and Glenlee community sites. These renovations were made possible with Winnipeg’s City Renovation grant and the federal government’s Canada 150 program.

At the Glenlee site we’ve installed new hot water tanks and wallboard along all the walls to prevent damage. There is a new entry door that meets Accessibility criteria for people with disabilities.

At the Norberry site there is now skate flooring in the hallway and dressing rooms by the arena and new windows in skate change area. We’ve also installed new siding and lighting outside along the rink. Improvements to our main hall include a new projector and screen setup.

We have a new advertising agreement with Sunova Credit Union, which includes new wraps on both our Zambonis.

Future renovation plans on the Norberry site will focus on the main hall washrooms, kitchen, and an improved security system. At the Glenlee site we will be working on batting cage revamping.

Hope to see you at our facilities!

A SPECIAL THANK YOU TO ALL OUR ADVERTISERS

The Norberry-Glenlee Community Centre wishes to thank the many businesses who purchased an advertisement to make this publication possible.

Your ad helped us to defer all costs relating to this newsletter. We value your support and gratefully

acknowledge your participation.

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGEIt’s a great year to celebrate communities, large and small, as we also celebrate 150 years of Canada. We have even more to be proud of in the Norberry-Glenlee area as Saint Vital is the second oldest permanent settlement in Manitoba. Communities have worked together on this land for for more than two centuries to help each other survive and thrive. We happily continue that tradition at the Norberry-Glenlee Community Centre by providing facilities and programs to enrich everyone’s community experience.

This summer saw our best turnout ever to our annual Knight of Celebration event, bringing together members of our community for food, volunteer recognition, family fun and a wonderful fireworks display. I would like to thank all the tireless volunteers that helped us with this hugely successful event.

In that vein, we recognized Nikki Palmer for her dedication to our Mini Soccer program over the last several years. We also thanked Mike Thompson for his longtime volunteer service on our board.

Thanks again to NGCC’s amazing staff, our dedicated volunteers, and the funding agencies that recognize the needs of the community and rise to the challenge.

Sean Fedorowich – President
