  • Given that we are all God’s children, everyone is welcome at our parishes regardless of status in the Church,

regardless of marital status, regardless of prior religious experience, personal history, background, or orientation. Everyone is invited, accepted,

and respected at both Saint Margaret and Blessed Sacrament Parishes of Saugus.

    HOLY FAMILY SUNDAY DECEMBER 27, 2020 WWW.SAUGUSCATHOLICS.ORG

  • A MESSAGE FROM FR. TIM

    2 HOLY FAMILY SUNDAY DECEMBER 27, 2020

Today, we hear the well-known story of the Annunciation, in which Mary is asked to be the mother of

Jesus. When the angel is finished speaking, Mary asked; “How can this be, since I have no relations

with a man?” The angel said to her in reply, “the Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of

the most high will overshadow you. Therefore the child to be born will be called holy, the Son of

    God.”

In another gospel passage the angel of the Lord said to Zechariah; “your prayer has been heard.

Your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you shall name him John. Zechariah said to the angel,

“how shall I know this? For I am an old man, and my wife is advanced in years.”

What happens here? Both the Blessed Mother and Zechariah ask questions of how can this be after

the announcement of the future birth of their sons. Zechariah, however, looses his ability to talk as a

result and nothing happens to the Blessed Mother. To me both seem like legitimate questions.

Is the difference in the way that the angel’s message is heard and reacted to? I wondered if the

Blessed Mother heard what the angel said and believed that what was promised was possible for

God. Whereas, I wonder if Zechariah heard the message with ears of doubt? Zechariah was older

and had he allowed life’s disappointments to influence how he heard things. Elizabeth was consid-

ered barren and in those days there was shame attached to that. Zechariah undoubtedly shared in

that shame. So when he hears what the angel says he is doubtful and becomes a victim of his doubt.

Isn’t this another situation of what we were reflecting on last week. Make straight the way of the

Lord. Zechariah is letting the past hinder him from allowing the Lord to enter his life.

How does that impact us? Have we allowed life’s happenings, disappointments, failure, betrayals im-

pact how we hear things? Do those same feelings impact how we hear the Word of God? Do we

really believe that all things are possible with God? Do we discount the prophecies of Isaiah and a

better world because of life or do we look to discover the meaning of the prophecies and ways to

    bring them to fulfillment?

The Blessed Mother believed and trusted. Zechariah doubted and became handicapped. I wonder if

the lesson for us today is to look at our reaction to God’s Word and could our reaction hinder us from

believing and causing us to be a victim of doubt and despair, instead of a person of vision and hope?

    Fr. Tim

A Gentle Reminder As this unprecedented time goes, we

may be apt to forget some of the safety precautions that we needed to put in place so that we could resume live

Masses. When you make a reservation, you are agreeing to:

Wear a mask at all times when in the church.

Bring hand sanitizer with you. Follow the usher to your assigned seat and remain in that seat at all times until

Mass is finished Leave the church immediately after

receiving Holy Communion by the door on the side of the church where you

were sitting. We ask every one to understand that these commitments are to ensure the

safety of both priests and parishioners during this difficult time.

    Blessings, Fr. Tim

Weekday Mass Intentions will now be celebrated on the weekend Masses except those on Wed & Fri.

From the desk of Fr. Tim: A story to ponder as we celebrate Christmas A little boy wanted to meet God. He knew it was a long trip to where God lived, so he packed his suitcase with Twinkies and a six-pack of Root Beer and he started his journey. When he had gone about three blocks, he met an elderly man. The man was sitting in the park just feeding some pigeons. The boy sat down next to him and opened his suitcase. He was about to take a drink from his root beer when he no-ticed that the man looked hungry, so he offered him a Twinkie. The man gratefully accepted it and smiled at the boy. His smile was so pleasant that the boy wanted to see it again, so he offered him a root beer. Again the man smiled at him. The boy was delighted! They sat there all afternoon eating and smiling, but they never said a word. As it grew dark, the boy realized how tired he was and he got up to leave, but before he had gone more than a few steps, he turned around, ran back to the man, and gave him a hug. The man gave him the biggest smile ever. When the boy opened the door to his own house a short time later, his mother was surprised by the look of joy on his face. She asked him, “What did you do today that made you so happy?” He replied, “I had lunch with God.” But before his mother could respond, he added, “You know what? God’s got the most beautiful smile I’ve ever seen!” Meanwhile, the elderly man, also radiant with joy, returned to his home. His son was stunned by the look of peace on his face and he asked, “Dad, what did you do today that made you so happy?” He replied, “I ate Twinkies in the park with God.” However, before his son responded, he added, “You know, he’s much younger than I expected.” Too often we underestimate the power of a touch, a smile, a kind word, a listening ear, an honest compliment, or the smallest act of caring, all of which have the potential to turn a life around. People come into our lives for a reason, a season, or a lifetime. Embrace all equally! Author unknown Fr. Tim
