A MESSAGE FROM FR. TIM

2

The gospel of the Canaanite woman is one that raises an eyebrow as we listen to the dialogue between Jesus and the Canaanite woman. Jesus’ response is so hurtful, rude and basically un-christian. Yet when we look at the passage there is much to contemplate, and much to take from this for our own life. Remember Jesus has invited us to learn from him. What are we to learn from this passage? Maybe the first thing is admitting when we are wrong and second looking at our persistence in prayer. Think about the person of Jesus; he has come to realize that he is the Son of God and that he has a mission here on earth. The father has sent him not only to heal and reconcile, but to call the people to conversion. He understands that and has come to do that well as we see in the various texts. Yet, once again the impact of stories about Jesus depends tremendously on our understanding of the Incarnation. We are asked to recall that Jesus was the Incarnate Being, both God and Man; a mystery that we will never understand. In this passage I think we see where there is a conflict between the human and the divine. As a human Jesus was raised as a Jew. He knew the Jewish tradition and belief. He was taught, as it was the understanding of the Jews, that salvation was for the Jewish people. The Canaanite woman approaches him and begs for healing for her daughter and Jesus’ response, although stated very rudely, stemmed from his belief system that was not of God but of human understanding. Yet in her persistence Jesus recognized her faith and I suspect heard the voice of God and came to believe that sal-vation was for all. It was in her tenacity and her persistence that he came to recognize the greater good. Here we have the Messiah, person of importance, recognizing his mistake, and publicly changing his ways to go along with the ways of God. On the other hand, we have the woman who had the conviction of her belief to go against all tradition and approach Jesus, begging him for healing. Even though she must have felt ig-nored, ridiculed, and made to feel like a dog she hung in there with her love for her daughter and her belief that he could and would do it. Think of the change that this brought about not only in the life of the woman, in the life of the daughter, but in the life and ministry of Jesus. I wondered in the Canaanite woman had not been so persistent would the daughter have been healed and would Jesus have approached the woman at the well. When Jesus approached the woman at the well he went against all types of traditions, Jewish men speaking with a Samaritan woman, asking for a drink and drinking from the same vessel. Were the results of her conviction a defining moment in the life of Jesus? Did God the Father, pick this unsuspecting woman as his instrument in refining the min-istry of Jesus? The passage leaves us with things for us to consider, especially in this time of pandemic. In our belief and convictions are we open to the voice of God, can we consider that we might be mis-taken or that our view is too narrow? Are we as persistent in our prayer as this woman or do we give up when it does not seem to be going our way? Think of the difference that these two actions made; in recognizing his narrow vision, his mes-sage of salvation went out to all and in her persistence there was healing and life.

Fr. Tim

9:00 AM-Live Streaming ONLY- No congregation

From the Desk of Fr. Tim, One of the things I have been thinking about lately as we live this pandemic that the precautions that we are asked to take are not only for our safety but the safe-ty of others. We have all heard and seen stories of people creatively responding to help others but let’s not forget the every day actions we are all called to do for our safety and the safety of others. The wearing of a mask or the observing of social distance may become for some of us an annoyance and something we are tired of doing but think of the reason we are asked to do it. Just think: we may safe a life by observing safety measures we have been asked to take. Fr. Tim

A Gentle Reminder As this unusual summer goes on, we

may be apt to forget some of the safety precautions that we needed to put in place so that we could resume live

Masses. When you make a reservation, you are agreeing to:

Wear a mask at all times when in the church.

Bring hand sanitizer with you. Follow the usher to your assigned seat and remain in that seat at all times until

Mass is finished Leave the church immediately after

receiving Holy Communion by the door on the side of the church where you

were sitting.

We ask every one to understand that these commitments are to ensure the

safety of both priests and parishioners during this difficult time.

Blessings, Fr. Tim
