It’s safe to say that our community knows a little about growing, gathering and giving. We’re blessed with an abundance of resources, from rich farmland to the mighty Mississippi. We celebrate bountiful harvests and band together when times are tough. That’s the thing about growth – it’s not always easy. But what makes our community special is its dedication to persevering, growing and thriving – together. I’m proud that the Community Foundation shares this commitment.

In my four years serving on the Board – two as Board Chair – this Community Foundation has hit a growth spurt, thanks to the generous support and enthusiasm of our community. We’ve outgrown our old location and relocated, added new staff and planted seeds in six counties through our County Endowment program – three of which have grown enough to mature and begin their own grantmaking.

No matter how much the Community Foundation grows, it continues to be a simple way to connect our community to causes that matter. It continues to be a vehicle for individuals and families to make lasting contributions to honor loved ones or ensure legacies. And, it continues to be an effective and efficient way for corporations to manage their charitable donations and for organizations to ensure their future.

Beyond giving, one incredible by-product of generosity is the positive impact it has on others. We get to – and will – leave a legacy. People will remember us for our generosity and selflessness. They will remember our joy in giving. We can live in such a way that our loved ones will understand our priorities and they will be taught by our actions. Leaving a legacy of generosity can change the trajectory of not only our families, but our entire community.

There are many ways to help keep our community strong and growing and leave legacies. All it takes is a seed – and we’re here to help it grow.

Making an impact doesn’t always happen overnight. It often starts with a seed – an idea, a motivation, a purpose. And, with the right support, it grows strong roots and a healthy bounty.

Since 1997, the Community Foundation Serving West Central Illinois & Northeast Missouri has not only planted its own roots in our 12-county community, but has helped grow more than 150 charitable funds that have benefitted more than 200 area not-for-profits through more than $2.7 million in grants serving every county.

It all started with a seed – $1,050 and an abundance of enthusiasm founded your Community Foundation. Over time, that seed was nourished and grew with generosity from the community who knew that once planted, a seed has the power to affect generations to come.

It started – and continues – with donors: families, individuals, businesses and not-for-profits who want to make a difference. That could mean honoring a loved one, leaving a legacy, supporting a specific charity or charitable interest or simply bettering the community. The Community Foundation then helps donors grow their funds, build endowments and facilitate giving strategies, all to benefit our community and our people.

Because when we grow funds that support the causes that matter, we’re putting down roots and growing stronger communities for years to come.

Growing Stronger Communities:2014 Grants by Program Area

This chart represents grants and scholarships awarded by program area in 2014. Grants are awarded from a variety of funds. Some funds enable grantmaking to support a full range of charitable purposes and causes within our entire geographic area. Others require grants be made for specific interests, causes, and/or

geographic areas. The chart excludes grants from funds designated for specific agencies and Interfund distributions.

According to Horizons Social Services, food is much more than mealtime sustenance. Feeding hungry people can be the beginning of a positive domino effect far beyond a filling a meal. But, in order to begin this effect, the ongoing challenge of raising the funds necessary to provide nutritious meals must be met.

“Food can renew health, reconnect families, restore vibrant communities and improve the community... The entire community benefits when hungry people are fed,” said Sarah Stephens, Executive Director.

Horizons used grant funds from the Community Foundation’s competitive grant program to help purchase food and supplies necessary to provide hot meals through Horizons’ soup kitchen and for groceries to stock the organization’s food pantry.

While the impact can be long-term, the payoff is often immediate. “It’s rewarding to watch the stress and anxiety dissolve off the face of a mother as she watches her hungry children devour a satisfying and healthy meal,” said Stephens.

As a result of the grant and other sources, Horizons served 25,115 meals to 3,000 unduplicated individuals in its soup kitchen and provided groceries to 5,700 individuals through its food pantry, uniting 15 community churches towards the cause. “The impact of hunger relief on our community is far reaching and life changing,” said Stephens.

Growing Funds 2014 GrantsHelp Grow Communities

In 2014, the Community Foundation awarded more than $400,000 in grants to organizations that make an impact on the issues that matter in communities throughout West Central Illinois & Northeast Missouri. From increasing food security to enriching education, supporting arts and culture to providing access to health and human services, grants help grow communities and improve the quality of life in our region.

Unrestricted Endowment Funds Grants from Unrestricted Endowment Funds support needs and opportunities in the Community Foundation’s 12-county region. Annually the Community Foundation accepts proposals for innovative and worthwhile projects through our competitive grant program. Donors who have established unrestricted endowments allow the Community Foundation to determine how grants are distributed. A committee of volunteers and board members from the region reviews each application to make awards from the following funds:Anonymous Donor Funds (2)Karl H. & Bobbi Bowles Family and Quincy Farm &

Branching out to Close Reading Gaps

As a result of a grant from the Raymond, Norbert, and Eleanor Rueter Fund at the Community Foundation, five teachers have used new skills gained through evidence-based training to close the reading gap amongst Liberty Elementary School special education students.

Recognizing the need for a multi-sensory curriculum to target literacy, the school brought in a trainer to observe the teachers in their classrooms before providing feedback to improve delivery of the new program. “The approach is explicit and systematic. Teachers can see the results in their students and report it back to parents,” said Liberty Elementary Special Education Coordinator Krista Tenhouse.

Six months after the program was implemented, students had gained an average of four reading levels. Two students, who at the beginning of the program were non-readers, were reading at grade level after six months. The school has not seen scores improve this much with any other intervention program.

According to Tenhouse, the program’s impact on students reaches far beyond literacy. “Knowing they are capable and knowing reading can be fun, feeling success… it gives children more potential and something to be proud of.”

The Legacy Society is a special designation given to those who choose to accept it. We recognize with gratitude those who have provided for their community’s wellbeing with a donation of at least $5,000 or who have notified us that they have made provisions to include the Community Foundation in their estate plans.

Closing out 2014 on a spirited note, the Quincy Symphony Orchestra Association performed a holiday concert with support from a grant from the Community Foundation.

The concert featured the QSOA orchestra, chorus and youth chorus, allowing each of these ensembles to participate in a special performance. Because there are few musical pieces written for this unique performer combination, the association used grant funds to commission a new work, which will bolster the QSOA library for years to come.

“We are so appreciative of Community Foundation support which allowed us to present a very memorable concert, bringing the community a brand new piece of music by James Stephenson, a rising star in the composition world,” said Jane Polett, QSOA General Manager.

One-thousand and seventy people attended the holiday concert, marking the association’s largest attendance to date.

A group of citizens believed that by working together we can enrich the quality of life in our region.

Their vision and action created the Community Foundation on November 26, 1997. By December 31—which marked the end of our first fiscal year—we held $1,050. Additional financial support was committed. That enabled our newly formed Community Foundation to embark upon our work to offer people from all walks of life the opportunity to build funds to help address needs and opportunities today, tomorrow—forever.

The Founders Circle includes those whose vision and generosity have made it possible for the Community Foundation to strengthen our communities now and for generations to come.

Your Community Foundation:Giving & Growing Together

The Community Foundation serves as an endowment builder, a donor advisor, community connector and

grant maker. We are the caretaker and guardian of more than 150 charitable funds and have awarded more than

$2.7 million in grants to serve our communities.

The Role of YOUR Community Foundation

Your Community Foundation is a not-for-profit organization which encompasses 12 area counties

and works with donors to build charitable funds that support local causes. Through grants and scholarships, these funds address significant community needs and

opportunities now and in the future.

Who we are?

We work with you to meet your charitable-giving goals. We help donors establish and build funds to serve the agencies and causes that they hold dear. By focusing on what’s important to you, we can help you create a

giving plan that has the greatest impact.

How do we serve YOU?

• We don’t focus on just one charitable interest. Our goal is to assist worthy not-for-profit organizations and the donors who care about their missions.

• We understand the needs and challenges of local communities because we live here and we listen.

• We help with pressing needs and opportunities within the community.

• We offer a place for donors with similar interests to make a greater impact by working together.

Why invest in YOUR Community Foundation?
