Giving Thanks Alwaystaken from a message given by Adrian Rogers

Giving thanks always for all things unto God and the Father in thename of our Lord Jesus Christ. Ephesians 5:20

I imagine that all of us would agree that this commandmenttothank God at all times for all thingsis perhaps the hardest in all ofthe Bible to practice. But it is the secret to a happy and productivelife.

When Should We Be Thankful?I want you to notice several things about this passage of Scripture.First, I want you to notice when we should be thankful. We are togive thanks always. If Paul had said sometimes, that wouldnt beso hard. But he clearly said always.

Now were coming to Thanksgiving Day, but you and I both know that one day is not enough.Psalm 68:19 says, Blessed be the Lord, Who daily loadeth us with benefits... Every day youget a fresh load. You should never pray without thanking God.

Why should God give you anything else if you dont thank Him for what Hes already given you? Many of us need to pull out some of the groans in our prayers and shove in some hallelujahs. Ifyou dont already, begin putting some thank yous in your prayers.

For What Do We Give Thanks? And what should we our thanks be for? For all things! Thank God for your faith, for your friends, for your food, and for the water you drink? You may ask, Do I have to thank God for dirtydishes? Well, a lot of people would like to have some dirty dishes; that would mean they hadsomething to eat. But also, just be thankful for your fortunethe things that God has given youand done for you.

In church, a family heard of a couple giving a significant love offering in memory of their sonwho had died on the battlefield. On the way home, the wife asked her husband, Why dont wegive an offering of an equal amount for our son? He said, Why? Our son wasnt killed. Shereplied, Dont you think thats a good reason to give an offering?

How Do We Give God Thanks? But how? How is it possible to thank God always for all things?Beginning in verse 18, Paul says it is possible because of threethings. First of all, we are to give thanks in the Spirit. He says, Andbe not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with theSpirit. You see, to be Spirit-filled is to be thankful. If youre notthankful, youre not Spirit-filled. In contrast, there is no way you canbe Spirit-filled and be unthankful. The mark of a Spirit-filled life isgratefulness.

So give thanks in the Spirit, and verse 20 says to give thanks untoGod and the Father. James 1:17 says, Every good gift and everyperfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father oflights, with Whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning.Dont think negatively about God. God is good. He is your Father.

So, in the Spirit unto the Father and through the Son. Verse 20 also says to give thanksin the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. You thank God in the name or with the authority ofChrist. You dont have to understand all that God is doing. Even if you dont understand it, youcan just say, In the name of Jesus, I thank You.

Make it your daily habit to lift your heart to God in praise as you get out of bed each morning.

Just say, Lord God, I love You, and I praise You. What a great way to start your day and tolive your life!

Four Levels of LifeIn closing, I want you to think about something. There are basically four levels of life. The first isrepresented by people who are constantly complaining and grumbling. They brighten up a roomjust by leaving it.

The second includes people who just live lives of ingratitude. They dont complain, but theynever thank God for His obvious blessings. Thats a little better but not much.

Then, there are people who thank God for obvious blessings. When something good happens, theyre grateful. Thats a better level.

But let me tell you what the highest level is. It is to be grateful for all things at all times. Nowfolks when you get to that place, then you have learned the secret of joy.

Well, Thanksgiving came and went. Did your gratitude last beyond your afternoon nap? For

many, thats the extent of their thanksgivinga one-time, get-it-out-of-the-way holiday that

reminds them to reflect on how blessed they are. Too often and too quickly, people resort

back to being ingrates. But God wills us to be thankfulallthe time, in allthings. Thats thepoint of1 Thessalonians 5:18where Paul says, In everything give thanks; for this is Gods

will for you in Christ Jesus. So if youre saved, Spirit-filled, sanctified, submissive, and

suffering, you have one thing left to do in order to follow Gods willbe saying thanks.

Pauls simple, direct commandin everything give thanksallows believers no excuse for

harboring ingratitude. In everythingcarries an unlimited requirement. It refers to

everything that occurs in life. With the obvious exception of personal sin, we are to express

thanks for everything. No matter what struggles or trials, God commands us to find reasons

for thanking Him always(Acts 5:41;James 1:2-3;1 Peter 1:6-9). Thats His will.

If youre not obeyingthatcommand, youre not following Gods will. Think of it like this: If

gratitude doesnt come easy for you, neither will finding Gods will. Or to put it another way,

if you struggle with being thankful, youll struggle with following Gods will. Need some

motivation? Here are some reasons God wills you to be thankful

    1. God commands it:

Gratitude should come naturally to believers in response to all God has done

on their behalf, but because of our hardness of heart, God enjoins us to

thanksgiving with commands(Phil. 4:6;Col. 2:7;1 Thess. 5:18). Therefore, all forms of ingratitude are sinful. Paul commanded the Colossians, And let

the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in

one body; and be thankful (Col. 3:15).

When Paul describes the believers Spirit-filled life, he writes, speaking to

one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making

melody with your heart to the Lord; always giving thanks for all things in

the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to God, even the Father (Eph. 5:20).

God doesnt merely command those expressions of gratitude and leave

believers helpless to comply. He enables us to articulate them (Phil. 2:13),

and is pleased when we do.

Joni Eareckson Tada, who was involved in an accident that left her

paralyzed from the neck down, writes, Giving thanks is not a matter of

feeling thankful, it's a matter of obedience.

    2. Thankfulness acknowledges Gods sovereignty:

The single, greatest act of worship you can render to God is to thank Him.

Its the epitome of worship because through gratitude, we affirm God as the

ultimate source of both trial and blessingand acknowledge our humble

    acceptance of both.

With a thankful heart, you can say in the midst of anything, God be

praised. That kind of attitude looks beyond the circumstance to the plan of

God. It sees beyond the pain to the sovereignty of God. It remembers, God

causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those

who are called according to His purpose (Rom. 8:28). An attitude of

thankfulness enables us to deal with those who wrong us, saying with

Joseph, As for you, you meant evil against me, but God meant it for good

(Gen. 50:20). Those who are thankful see the providential hand of God

everywhere and say, God, I thank You for the peaceful times as well as the

hard timesa difficult marriage, a challenging job, a severe illnessbecause

I knowYou will use those things for my good and Your glory.

The grateful Christian remembers that suffering perfects, confirms,

strengthens, and establishes him (1 Peter 5:10). God wills that kind of

    thankfulness.

    3. God judges ingratitude:

William Shakespeare wrote, How sharper than a serpent's tooth it is to

have a thankless child. Ingratitude thou marble hearted fiend. If

Shakespeare understood the hostile attitude behind thanklessness, imagine

    what Godmust think about it.

Ingratitude is the very essenceof an unregenerate heart, ranking among the

most intolerable sins in Scripture. The apostle Paul identified unbelievers

as ungrateful: For even though they knew God [through conscience and

general revelation], they did not honor Him as God or give thanks, but they

became futile in their speculations, and their foolish heart was darkened

(Rom. 1:21). Because man in his pride fails to honor and glorify God as

Creator, he also refuses to thank Him for His gracious provision.

Ingratitude betrays unbelief, and bothsins bring about Gods judgment.

Although God is the source of every good thing that men possessgiving

life, breath, rain, sunshine, and other natural blessings to the just and

unjust alike (Matt. 5:45;Acts 14:1517)the natural man refusesto thank

Him. In his fallen mind, to thank God is to acknowledge his own obligation

    to worship Him.

In the next post, well look at a few more reasons. In summary, God wills our being thankful

in all things because gratitude is the ultimate expression of a transformed heart. But

thanklessness can infest and destroy a church, marriage, family and home. So cultivate a

heart of gratitude. Be thankful for all things and in all circumstances. Thats Gods will. Are

    you following it?

    In All Things Give Thanks

    By Jason Lovelace

    Key Scripture:

    1 Thessalonians 5:18:

In everything give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ

    Jesus concerning you.

1 Peter 4:16: Yet, if any man suffer as a Christian, let him not be ashamed; but let him

    glorify God on this behalf.

What are some things that you give thanks for? When you think about your life, in what

areas of your life are you grateful?

What do you think you should give thanks for? Should you give thanks for the good

things of life only, or should you also give thanks for the bad? The Bible has a lot to saywhen it comes to giving thanks.

Point Number One : The Easy Answer:

Of course, we should always be thankful for the blessings and good things that come

into our lives. Every book in the Bible speaks of the need for giving thanks to God for

the good times, for the blessings, and for the good things we receive. The Book of

James states that every good and perfect gift is from above, from God the Father (James

1:17). We all probably know someone who is an ingrate?

Do you know that word, ingrate? An ingrate is someoneno matter what he or she

receives, be it good or badwho does not say Thank you and is basicallyungrateful, unthankful for anything and everything. If you look at many of todays

celebrities, many of them are truly ingrates. They think that everything is theirs to

enjoy, and even when someone gives them something, they never say thank you. God.

However, instructs his followers to behave differently. His Word speaks that we should

give thanks for every good thing we receive. This shows that we are truly

    grateful.

This should be especially so when we think of the price that Jesus Christ paid on the

cross. For you who are a Christian, how often do you say Thank you! to Jesus Christ

for the forgiveness he has given you? Do you truly understand what Jesus Christ did,

what he gave up, so that you and I could be saved from a fiery eternity? When we think

of Jesus Christ, when we think of the price He paid on the cross for our sins, and if we

have received Jesus into our hearts and lives, we must be thankful.

We can never repay him for what he has done for us. The best way to be grateful is to

give yourself to Jesus, and to live for him completely.. Its also good to thank him for

his gift of eternal life when we pray. We need to give thanks for the good things, and for

the ultimate gift of eternal life.

Point Number Two : Thank You for Punching Me!We know that we ought to be thankful for the good things we receive, but how about

the bad times? Should we be thankful in hard, bad times? If you have some terrible

thing happen, do you say thank you to God for it? If someone steals your money, or you

are hit by the driver of another car, are you grateful? Maybe you think that these words

are crazy, but consider todays verse from 1 Thessalonians 5:18. God says through Paul

to be thankful in all things. How is this possible?

How can we be thankful in all things? Think about Job. Do you know this person?

Have you read the book of Job? Besides Jesus Christ, nobody in the Bible suffered

worse than Job. He lost all his goods, lost his family, his home, and even his health. His

wife turned against him, and his children were killed. Even his friends, when they came

to comfort and help him ended up criticizing him. But in spite of all of this, job praised

the Lord, and even thanked him for the hard times. Listen to his words to his wife; Jobs

wife told him to curse God and die but Job, instead, said this:

Shall we receive Good at the hand of God, and shall we not receive evil? (Job 2:10).

In another part of the book, Job also said this:

The Lord gave, and the Lord has taken away; blessed bethe name of the Lord (Job1:21).

How is this possible? How can someone, who had his home, his life, his possessions,

his health, and everything else taken away say these things? How can a father and

husband who saw his children killed, and watched his wife walk away from him lift his

head and his hands and praise the Lord for it all?

When bad times, hard times happen to people around you, what are other peoples

attitudes? When tragedy or hardships strike you, what kind of spirit do you have? It is

hard to have a grateful heart in hard times, and yes, it is also hard to have a positive

attitude when tragedy strikes, but this is what God says. Consider the words of Job and

  • 8/10/2019 Giving Thanks Always

    6/17

the words of Jesus Christ. When Jesus was crucified, he did not complain. Instead, he

    said Father, forgive

It is important to give thanks when we go through hard times as well as

    blessings.

Point Number Three: What Doesnt Kill a Person Makes Him or Her Stronger

One of the reasons that we should give thanks even in the hard times is because strength

comes from the hard times. Think about a sport that you enjoy. My favorite sport is

weight lifting. My coaches in weight lifting always taught that the muscles of the human

body grow stronger when they are broken down. This breaking down comes through the

hard, tough training of lifting. Its the same for any sport, or for any study, for that

matter. Hard work, hard training, and hard study produce great results later. It is the

same with the formation of a diamond. What is a diamond? How is it made?

Do you know what a diamond really is? A diamond is really just a lump of coal. Thedifference, though, between a diamond and coal is that the diamond has gone through

long, hard, hot, and intense pressure. A diamond is formed by way of pressure, heat, and

time. Some scientists say that it takes 1,000 or more years for a diamond to form.

During that time, it is going through intense heat, pressure, and difficulty.

In the same way, God tests us. Job was tested by God. In the end, with Gods help, Job

proved himself faithful, and Job was doubly rewarded in the end. In the same way, we,

too, will grow stronger, and receive a great reward from God if we hold true to Him,

and are thankful for the hard times. One of the greatest rewards is being identified with

Jesus Christ, and when we suffer, all the while being thankful, we are taking Christs

attitude, and people will see it! Later, we will be able to help others because of the

strength that God gave us because of the hard times. The hard times we go through

    make us stronger.

Point Number Four: Praise God and Give the Devil a Black Eye

The last reason we need to be thankful for hard times is because of the enemy. Though

God allows hard times to come, it is the devil that brings hard times. Job chapters 1 and

2 show clearly that the devil brings hard times upon everyone, especially followers of

Jesus Christ. The reason God allows the hard times is to make us stronger, but the devil

brings the hard times so that we will curse (God) to (his) face (Job 1:11, Job 2:5).

The devil wants us to turn away from God, grumble, complain, whine, and eventually

turn against him. Have you ever heard someone say Why is God doing this to me? or

Where is God in my trouble? This is why the devil brings trouble. Think about the

children of Israel when Moses led them out of Egypt. How often in the books of

Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy do the children of Israel grumble and

complain about the hardships of their travel to the Promised Land?

How often did they accuse Moses and God of brining us to the desert to die? What

happened to these ungrateful children of Israel? Instead of taking a trip that was about a

year or two at most, the grumbling and complaining of the children of Israel resulted inthem wandering in the desert for 40 years.

  • 8/10/2019 Giving Thanks Always

    7/17

This is what the devil wants from us! He wants us to turn from God, to complain, to

curse (God) to (hid) face and die. But when we praise God in the face of hard times,

we do something to the devil that is like punching him in the eye. The devil wants us to

complain, but when we praise God for the hard times, instead of curse him, we stop the

devil in his tracks. Praising God in the hard times instead of cursing him proves thedevil a liar. In the hard times, Praise God (dont curse him), because it helps to defeat

    the devil.

Conclusion: Are You Going Through Hard Times?

Are you having a tough time right now? If you are, what kind of attitude do you have?

Is it a good attitude, one of thanks and praise to God, or are you ungrateful, cursing and

complaining to God, blaming him, and ignoring the test? It is hard to go through tough

times and have a good attitude. We can do it if we go on the strength of the LORD.

Alone, we will become bitter, hard, ungrateful, and, in the end, in a place where God

doesnt want us to be. Lets pray

    Prayer

I pray, today, O LORD, for anyone who is reading this who is going through some hard

times. For those who know you not, Father, I pray that they will come to know you, in

spite of the hard times, and that they will see this as the day in which they came to know

you. We pray for the believer, father, the brother and sister who may be going through a

hard spot or a tough time. We pray, LORD, that you will comfort them in the hard

times, and strengthen them, helping them to rejoice despite the pain, and praise you, in

the face of the hurt. We pray all of this in the saving Name of Jesus Christ, Amen.

    History

Prayers of thanks and special thanksgiving ceremonies are common among almost allreligions after harvests and at other times.[2]The Thanksgiving holiday's history in NorthAmerica is rooted in English traditions dating from the ProtestantReformation. It also hasaspects of aharvest festival, even though the harvest in New England occurs well beforethe late-November date on which the modern Thanksgiving holiday is celebrated.[2][3]

In the English tradition, days of thanksgiving and special thanksgiving religious servicesbecame important during theEnglish Reformationin the reign ofHenry VIIIand in reactionto the large number of religious holidays on the Catholic calendar. Before 1536 there were95 Church holidays, plus 52 Sundays, when people were required to attend church andforego work and sometimes pay for expensive celebrations. The 1536 reforms reduced thenumber of Church holidays to 27, but somePuritanswished to completely eliminate allChurch holidays, includingChristmasandEaster. The holidays were to be replaced byspecially called Days of Fasting or Days of Thanksgiving, in response to events that thePuritans viewed as acts ofspecial providence.Unexpected disasters or threats ofjudgement from on high called for Days of Fasting. Special blessings, viewed as comingfrom God, called for Days of Thanksgiving. For example, Days of Fasting were called onaccount of drought in 1611, floods in 1613, and plagues in 1604 and 1622. Days of

Thanksgiving were called following the victory over theSpanish Armadain 1588 andfollowing the deliverance ofQueen Annein 1705. An unusual annual Day of Thanksgiving

began in 1606 following the failure of theGunpowder Plotin 1605 and developed intoGuyFawkes Day.[4]

While some researchers state that "there is no compelling narrative of the origins of theCanadian Thanksgiving day",[5]the first Canadian Thanksgiving is often traced back to 1578and the explorerMartin Frobisher.Frobisher, who had been trying to find anorthernpassageto the Pacific Ocean, held his Thanksgiving celebration not for harvest but inthanks for surviving the long journey from England through the perils of storms andicebergs. On his third and final voyage to the far north, Frobisher held a formal ceremonyinFrobisher BayinBaffin Island(present-dayNunavut)to give thanks to God and in aservice ministered by the preacherRobert Wolfallthey celebrated Communion.[6]

The origins of Canadian Thanksgiving are also sometimes traced to the French settlerswho came toNew Francewith explorerSamuel de Champlainin the early 17th century, who celebrated their successful harvests. The French settlers in the area typically hadfeasts at the end of the harvest season and continued throughout the winter season, even

sharing food with theindigenous peoplesof the area.[7]

As settlers arrived in Canada from New England, late autumn Thanksgiving celebrationsbecame common. New immigrants into the country, such as the Irish, Scottish andGermans, also added their own traditions to the harvest celebrations. Most of the U.S.aspects of Thanksgiving (such as the turkey), were incorporated whenUnited EmpireLoyalistsbegan to flee from the United States during theAmerican Revolutionand settled inCanada.[7]

Thanksgiving is now astatutory holidayin most jurisdictions of Canada, with the exceptionof theAtlanticprovinces ofPrince Edward Island,Newfoundland and Labrador,NewBrunswickand Nova Scotia.[8]

In the United States, the modern Thanksgiving holiday tradition is commonly, but notuniversally, traced to a poorly documented 1621 celebration atPlymouthin present-dayMassachusetts.The 1621 Plymouth feast and thanksgiving was prompted by a goodharvest.PilgrimsandPuritanswho began emigrating from England in the 1620s and 1630scarried the tradition of Days of Fasting and Days of Thanksgiving with them toNewEngland.Several days of Thanksgiving were held in early New England history that have

been identified as the "First Thanksgiving", including Pilgrim holidays inPlymouthin 1621and 1623, and a Puritan holiday inBostonin 1631.[9][10]According to historian JeremyBangs, director of theLeiden American Pilgrim Museum, the Pilgrims may have beeninfluenced by watching the annual services of Thanksgiving for the relief of thesiege ofLeidenin 1574, while they were staying in Leiden.[11]In later years, religious thanksgivingservices were declared by civil leaders such asGovernor Bradford, who planned athanksgiving celebration and fast in 1623.[12][13][14]The practice of holding an annual harvestfestival did not become a regular affair in New England until the late 1660s.[15]

Thanksgiving proclamations were made mostly by church leaders in New England up until1682, and then by both state and church leaders until after theAmerican Revolution.During the revolutionary period, political influences affected the issuance of Thanksgivingproclamations. Various proclamations were made by royal governors,John Hancock,

GeneralGeorge Washington, and theContinental Congress,[16]each giving thanks to Godfor events favorable to their causes.[17]As President of the United States, GeorgeWashington proclaimed the first nation-wide thanksgiving celebration in America markingNovember 26, 1789, "as a day of public thanksgiving and prayer to be observed byacknowledging with grateful hearts the many and signal favours of Almighty God".[18]

In modern times the President of the United States, in addition to issuing a proclamation, will"pardon" a turkey, which spares the bird's life and ensures that it will spend the durationof its life roaming freely on farmland.[19]

Debate about f irst celebrat ions in the United States

The traditional representation of where the first Thanksgiving was held in the United States

has often been a subject ofboosterismand debate, though the debate is often confused bymixing up the ideas of a Thanksgiving holiday celebration and a Thanksgiving religiousservice. According to author James Baker, this debate is a "tempest in a beanpot" and"marvelous nonsense".[9]

Local boosters in Virginia, Florida, and Texas promote their own colonists, who (like manypeople getting off a boat) gave thanks for setting foot again on dry land.(Jeremy Bangs[11])

These claims include an earlier religious service by Spanish explorers in Texas at SanElizarioin 1598, as well as thanksgiving feasts in theVirginia Colony.[20]RobynGioiaandMichael Gannonof theUniversity of Floridaargue that the earliest Thanksgivingservice in what is now the United States was celebrated by theSpanishon September 8,1565, in what is nowSaint Augustine, Florida.[21][22]A day for Thanksgiving services wascodified in the foundingcharterofBerkeley HundredinCharles City County, Virginiain

    1619.[23]

According to Baker, "Historically, none of these had any influence over the evolution of themodern United States holiday. The American holiday's true origin was the NewEnglandCalvinistThanksgiving. Never coupled with a Sabbath meeting, the Puritanobservances were special days set aside during the week for thanksgiving and praise inresponse to God's providence."[9]

Fixing the date of the holiday

The reason for the earlier Thanksgiving celebrations in Canada has often been attributed tothe earlier onset of winter in the north, thus ending the harvest seasonearlier.[24]Thanksgiving in Canada did not have a fixed date until the late 19th century. Prior

toCanadian Confederation, many of the individual colonial governors of the Canadianprovinces had declared their own days of Thanksgiving. The first official CanadianThanksgiving occurred on April 15, 1872,[25]when the nation was celebrating thePrince of

Wales'recovery from a serious illness.[24]By the end of the 19th century, Thanksgiving Daywas normally celebrated on November 6. However, whenWorld War Iended, theArmisticeDayholiday was usually held during the same week. To prevent the two holidays fromclashing with one another, in 1957 theCanadian Parliamentproclaimed Thanksgiving to beobserved on its present date on the second Monday of October.[7]Since 1971, when theAmericanUniform Monday Holiday Acttook effect, the American observance ofColumbus

Dayhas coincided with the Canadian observance of Thanksgiving.[26][27]

Much as in Canada, Thanksgiving in the United States was observed on various datesthroughout history. From the time of theFounding Fathersuntil the time of Lincoln, the dateThanksgiving was observed varied from state to state. The final Thursday in November hadbecome the customary date in most U.S. states by the beginning of the 19th century.Thanksgiving was first celebrated on the same date by all states in 1863 by a presidentialproclamation ofAbraham Lincoln.Influenced by the campaigning of authorSarah JosephaHale, who wrote letters to politicians for around 40 years trying to make it an official holiday,Lincoln proclaimed the date to be the final Thursday in November in an attempt to foster asense of American unity between the Northern and Southern states.[28]Because of theongoingCivil Warand theConfederate States of America's refusal to recognize Lincoln'sauthority, a nationwide Thanksgiving date was not realized untilReconstructionwas

    completed in the 1870s.

On December 26, 1941, PresidentFranklin D. Rooseveltsigned a joint resolution ofCongress changing the national Thanksgiving Day from the last Thursday in November tothe fourth Thursday. Two years earlier, Roosevelt had used apresidential proclamationtotry to achieve this change, reasoning that earlier celebration of the holiday would give thecountry an economic boost.

Although theoriginal act of Parliament referencesGodand the holiday is celebrated in churches, theholiday is mostly celebrated in asecularmanner. Thanksgiving is astatutory holidayin allprovinces in Canada, except forNew BrunswickandNova Scotia. While businesses mayremain open in these provinces, the holiday is nonetheless recognized and celebratedregardless of its status.[29][30][31][32][33]

    Grenada

In the West Indian island ofGrenada, there is a national holiday known as ThanksgivingDay which is celebrated on October 25. Even though it bears the same name, and iscelebrated at roughly the same time as the American and Canadian versions ofThanksgiving, this holiday is unrelated to either of those celebrations. Instead the holidaymarks the anniversary of the U.S.-ledinvasion of the islandin 1983, in response tothedepositionand execution of Grenadian Prime MinisterMaurice Bishop.[34]
