1 OVERVIEW

COMPONENTS The components of the AS/400® Printing Solution are:

The configuration diagram that follows illustrates the relationship between these components.

AS/400 Printing Solution components

Print output generated by the AS/400 server passes through the LinkCom Xpress that acts as a converter from IPDS into PCL print commands, which are then sent to the Imagistics impc1-im8130 controller. For more information about LinkCom Xpress, go to the i-data section of www.mpitech.com.

A client PC can also send commands directly to the impc1-im8130 controller.

FINISHING OPTIONS AND LOGICAL PRINTERSImagistics offers several finishing options in addition to standard print commands coming from the AS/400. For example, stapling and hole punching are finishing options.

The finishing options are grouped in several preconfigured sets, which you associate with up to three logical printers.

In addition, a special utility, called the ITC Configurator Utility makes it possible for you to create custom configurations of finishing options at any time.

2 INSTALLATION

This chapter explains in general terms how to assemble the AS/400 Printing Solution and install the configuration utilities.

CHECK COMPONENTSYou should have received:

impc1-im8130 controller

The configuration utility (ITCConfigurator.exe) and the Imagistics ITC file set

The parallel board ZD6500020, parallel cable and LinkCom Xpress converter are purchased separately.

If any items are missing, contact Imagistics Service.

INSTALLATION PROCEDUREInstall the AS/400 printing solution in three steps:

1 Set up the hardware

2 Set up the AS/400 printer

3 Configure the client PC

Step 1: Set up the hardware1 Following the instructions that came with the parallel board,

install it in the impc1-im8130 controller.

2 Following the product installation instructions that came with the LinkCom Xpress, setup this device.

3 Connect the LinkCom Xpress to the ZD6500020 parallel board on the impc1-im8130 controller using the parallel printer cable that was shipped with the ZD6500020.

4 Press the TEST button on the LinkCom Xpress to print a test page to the impc1-im8130 controller.

5 Connect the LinkCom Xpress to the network hub.

NOTE:Please note that the impc1-im8130 controller can be directly connected to the AS/400 network at the same time. Thus, PCL based or Raw print jobs can be sent to it via the newtork bypassing the LinkCom Xpress device.

Step 2: Set up the AS/400 printerOn the AS/400, use the CRTDEVPRT command to configure the print settings according to the following table:

All other settings can be left unchanged.

The command CRTPSFCFG (Create Print Services Facility Configuration) can also be used to specify additional parameters for an AFP printer that are not supported on the CRTDEVPRT command. For details, please consult the i-data Host Print Setup Guide.

Step 3: Configure the client PC

Install utilities and copy needed files1 If it is not already available on the client PC, install the DLC

protocol. The DLC discovery protocol must be enabled, unless the LinkCom Xpress has an IP address.

2 Install the PrintGuide utility.

3 Copy the configuration utility (ITCConfigurator.exe) and the Imagistics ITC file set to the client PC.

Set network addresses1 Open PrintGuide. Refer to your PrintGuide documentation

for assistance.

2 Select Network settings under the Configuration view.

3 Click the TCP/IP tab and check the TCP/IP box.

4 Enter the IP address, Subnet mask and Gateway address for the LinkCom Xpress device.

Alternately, you can check the DHCP box if a DHCP server is available. The LinkCom Xpress will then obtain an IP address automatically. However, a static IP address is highly recommended. Otherwise the printer queue on the AS/400 must be reconfigured every time the IP address of the LinkCom Xpress changes

Once the TCP/IP protocol has been configured, the DLC protocol is no longer needed and may be removed. You’re now ready to configure the finishing options.

3 CONFIGURATION

This chapter explains how to configure select logical printers and customize the ITC files that specify finishing print functions. You can rewrite a modified file or save it under a new name.

WHAT ARE ITC FILES?An ITC file is a configuration file that defines the transformation of one print stream protocol into another. For example, the AS/400 print solution for the impc1-im8130 controller uses ITC files that define the transformation of AS/400 print streams into a format readable by the controller, including the impc1-im8130’s enhanced finishing options.

Only one ITC file at a time can be resident in the LinkCom Xpress. If several different configurations are needed, the appropriate configuration must be downloaded prior to running each print stream.

10 AS/400 Printing Solution for the Imagistics impc1-im8130 Controller

PRECONFIGURED ITC FILESThree logical printers are associated with each ITC file. Each logical printer has different finishing options. The AS/400 obtains the appropriate finishing option by directing the print stream output to the corresponding logical printer.

The following ITC files are provided.

There are two ways for modifying a configuration:

Edit an existing ITC file using the ITC Configurator utility to modify it or create a new ITC file. Then, use the PrintGuide utility to Update the configuration loaded into the LinkCom Xpress with the one from the modified ITC file.

-or-

Using the PrintGuide utility, edit the configuration loaded directly into the LinkCom Xpress and save it.

CONFIGURING FINISHING OPTIONSThis topic explains how to configure the finishing options if you need a configuration other than those provided by the preconfigured ITC files.

1 Open the ITC Configurator utility and use the File menu to select an ITC file.

ITC Configurator dialog box

To the right of the logical printer selection box is a description of the options associated with the currently selected logical printer.

2 Edit the options by using the drop-down menus of the option boxes.

If you modify an ITC file, it’s good practice to rename it using the Save As... function of the File menu.

SUPPORTED PJL AND PCL COMMANDS The following is a list of allowable PJL and PCL commands supported by the controller and the LinkCom Xpress.

In order to set the appropriate parameter combination, orientation and feeding direction should also be considered. Only paper sizes A4, B5 and LT support long edge feeding so that these paper sizes support both of top and left side stapling/hole punching for each orientation. But for the rest of the paper sizes, only the short edge feeding is supported so that only Top for portrait and Left for landscape are available. The installed finisher type should also be considered. If you install a hanging type finisher, available staple position is only for the rear side and therefore some staple positions may be ignored.
