Australia ups the ante for Eurovision

Christopher Plummer has been nomi-nated for a Golden Globe for the role in which he replaced Kevin Spacey.

The actor took over the role in “All the Money in the World” after a string* of sexual harassment allegations were made against Spacey.

The nominees for best drama fi lm include “Call Me by Your Name”, “Dunkirk,” “The Post,” “The Shape of Water” and “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri.”

Helen Mirren and Judi Dench are among the British nominees.

They were nominated for best actress in the comedy and musical categories, alongside Saoirse Ronan, Margot Robbie and Emma Stone.

“The Shape of Water” received the most nominations of any fi lm — with seven in total. “The Post” and “Three Billboards” each have six.

It was announced last month that Plum-mer would take over the role of the late oil tycoon Jean Paul Getty in “All the Money in the World.”

According to Variety, Spacey had

already fi lmed about two weeks of foot-age for the fi lm, which is directed by Ridley Scott.

Spacey had also appeared in a trailer* which was released in September.

Mark Wahlberg and Michelle Williams, who also star in the movie, had to take part in reshoots for the fi lm, which is still scheduled for release at the end of the month.

But another fi lm in which Spacey stars, “Baby Driver,” attracted one nomination — Ansel Elgort is up for best actor in a musical and comedy fi lm.

Gary Oldman is nominated for best actor in drama for playing Winston Churchill in “Darkest Hour” — the fi lm’s only nod.

Oldman faces competition from Timo-thee Chalamet (“Call Me by Your Name”), Daniel Day-Lewis (“Phantom Thread”), Tom Hanks, (“The Post”) and Denzel Washington (“Roman J. Israel, Esq”).

Nicole Kidman and Robert De Niro are among the nominees in the televi-sion categories.

Veteran TV presenter Keith Chegwin has died aged 60 after a long illness, his family has said.

They said he had endured* a “long-term battle with a progressive lung condition” which “rapidly worsened towards the end of this year.”

He died at home on Monday with his family by his side, who said they were “heartbroken.”

Tributes have been paid from the world of entertainment for the “true telly legend.”

His career spanned fi ve decades.The Liverpool-born star began

his career as a child actor, starring in fi lms such as Roman Polanski’s “Macbeth” and TV shows including “The Liver Birds,” “The Adventures of Black Beauty” and “Z-Cars.”

He went on to appear in reality TV shows including “Celebrity Big Brother.”

The larger-than-life character, described by his family as “a loving husband, father, son, brother, uncle and friend,” leaves his wife Maria and two children.

Chegwin was cared for at a hos-pice* in recent weeks.

After fi nishing ninth at this year’s Eurovision Song Contest, Australia is upping its game for 2018.

Pop star Jessica Mauboy will rep-resent her country in Lisbon next May, broadcaster SBS announced on Monday.

The 28-year-old instantly becomes one of the most current, established artists to take part in recent years.

Mauboy, who is the fi rst indigenous* artist to reach number one on the Aus-tralian album charts, said she would “sing my heart out for Australia.”

She added: “I’m so proud to be offi -cially representing my country and a little bit nervous — mainly about the dress!”

The star previously appeared at the 2014 Eurovision semifi nal in Denmark, playing the song “Sea of Flags” during the interval*.

Like many modern Eurovision contestants, Mauboy shot to fame on reality TV, coming second in the 2006 series of “Australian Idol.”

After the show, she released a live album, “The Journey,” which reached

top fi ve on charts thanks to the popularity of her cover of Christina Aguilera’s “Beautiful.”
