OUR ANNUAL CONGREGATIONAL MEETING
GREAT TURNOUT...lots of food and fellowship.
Our Annual Congregational Meeting was a success and there was a great turnout of members and guests to enjoy the meal, fellowship and to hear all that is going on in our church. In addition to learning about the state of our church, we discussed the process to call the next pastor, the budget, elected an elder and trustees and 2017 Nominating Committee. Many thanks to all whojoined us, helped prepare the food and participated in our Annual Congregational Meeting.

ADMINISTRATION
Normally this space contains a summary of the actions and decisions of Session at the monthly Session meeting. This
month the summary is of the Session Retreat held on February 10 and 11 because the monthly Session meeting was
held following the printing of the March Good News Newsletter.
This year with eleven Ruling Elders on the Session, the new committee assignments are identified on the next page.
With several hours of discussion regarding visioning and the future of First Presbyterian Church, Session identified the
following five (5) Goals for 2017:
1. Call an installed pastor. For the last eighteen (18) months both Session and the congregation have been pre-
paring to call an installed pastor by gathering data, completing surveys, and sharing information. The next
steps, to be completed in 2017, are to request permission from the Committee on Ministry (COM) to call a
Pastor Nominating Committee (PNC). After permission is received, the 2017 Nominating Committee will pre-
sent a slate of people to serve on the PNC at a called congregational meeting, because the PNC is elected by
the congregation, not appointed by Session.
2. Take care of one another in the congregation. Deacons do a wonderful job with one of their responsibilities of
caring for shut-ins and congregation members in times of special need. Session’s goal is to focus on caring for
each person in our congregation, including our visitors and winter residents, through more fellowship, learn-
ing, sharing, and serving opportunities.
3. Develop a local mission with the homeless. We have been called to “love your neighbor as yourself.” The sec-
ond goal encourages us to care for ourselves. This third goal looks outside ourselves to our community which
has multiple existing services for the homeless. Our challenge is to become more engaged and determine
whether we can assist or enhance those existing services or need to develop new programs to meet needs
that are currently not being met.
4. Give leadership to a community worship service. This goal will include working with a variety of other churches
to develop a worship service for our community.
5. Improved internal (within the congregation) and external (to the community) communication. This last goal
will better enable us to achieve the previous four (4) goals. Good communication is essential at every level of
activity and service, so this goal includes consistent information for our congregation and others in our com-
munity through e-mail, our website, Facebook, and press releases to newspapers regarding programs and ac-
tivities at the church as well as ways in which we will serve the homeless and others in our community.

THE STAFF – FACES YOU KNOW, PEOPLE YOU WANT TO KNOW
Included each month in The Good News for 2017, one member of the staff of First Presbyterian Church will be
highlighted. This is so we will not only know the faces, but we will get to know the people who serve the congre-
gation so faithfully. Each staff member will write their own article and we will get to know their history, person-
ality, interests, and what’s important to them.
Bruce Wilson, our part-time maintenance man and custodian at First Presbyterian Church, began working with
us on 01/13/2012. When Bruce began, he was only responsible for maintenance around the buildings and we
were using a cleaning company for the custodial duties. When it was time to renew the cleaning contract we
discussed with him the possibility of Bruce adding those services to his job responsibilities, and fortunately for
us, he was willing to add hours to his work week and take on these additional responsibilities. One of the sur-
prises our congregation has experienced in the past year is that Bruce has a wonderful bass voice and adds a
great deal to our worship by singing in our choir, including a solo in our Christmas Cantata. Those who are
around Bruce, both as employees and volunteers, know he is soft spoken, is willing to take on nearly any task,
works hard, and has a fun sense of humor. Our congregation is grateful for everything Bruce brings to us as he
serves God.
EMPLOYEE OF THE MONTH
BRUCE WILSON - CUSTODIAN
Let me begin by apologizing for not attending Billy’s memorial. I was only beginning to get over a bout with the flu. I really appreciate the volunteer work cleaning up. I really needed the rest. For some reason, the church wants me to present a short biography. I will try to make it interesting.
I was born in San Salvador, El Salvador on Dec 27th 1951. My father must have been feeling adventurous even after serving in the pacific in WWll and took his family (two boys and one girl at that point) with him on a civil engineering project there. My mother must have talked him out of staying for we moved to the states shortly after my birth.
I grew up in Chenango Bridge, New York, a suburb of Binghamton. I remember an idyllic setting with lots of places to play. I fear few children nowadays enjoy what I took for granted. The schools were excellent and I developed interests in Science, History, and Music. My family attended an Episcopalian church. My Mother was raised a Presbyterian and my father a Catholic. I think Episcopalian was meant to be a compromise. In March 1967, my father died of a brain aneurism. My Mother’s Father had moved to Daytona, Fla. Several years before (he attended the Presbyterian Church there) but wasn’t doing well after the death of my grandmother. My brothers and sister were all in college by that point so my mother and I moved to Daytona to take care of him. I graduated Mainland High in 1971 and went to USF in Tampa as a History major. My draft lottery number was

Love Gifts
NEWSLETTER: Psalm 37 “. . . Generosity seems to be the fabric of our church family. Gifts of Love are so thrilled to see the outpouring of our love by the gifts that we bring to them each month. Thank you all so much for your response to the needs of others. GOOD NEWS AND ANSWERS TO PRAYERS: last month we heard about an 83 y/o lady and her two sons liv-ing in a small tent. By receiving food from Gifts of Love she was able to save her money to move into a rental home they can afford. Praise the Lord for Gifts of Love and other churches like ours for providing food for this family and many others in similar situations. The volunteers at Gifts of Love call us “The Cereal Church,” so let’s continue giving BOXES OF CEREAL on Sunday, MARCH 5. May our Love Box continue to overflow with your generosity. For questions or sugges-tions, please call Carolyn Peters at 428-7976.
Dear Church Members,
We very much appreciate your continued support of our Food Pantry. You have helped us so
much for so long and we really appreciate what you do for us and our clients.
Thanks again,

STAFF over 300 so I had no fear of being drafted. I wasn’t against the war but I knew enough about it to not want to be involved.
In retrospect, I was rather adrift after my Father’s death and wasn’t very focused. I sometimes wish I had en-listed in something, but I didn’t.
In 1973 I returned to Daytona. I got a job with the News Journal as an Ad proof runner. On Wild Olive St. op-posite the auditorium there was the music establishment of Enrico Tamburini who taught Cello and repaired all string instruments. I loved hanging out there and getting to know that fascinating man. I was his student and companion for years. Of the Cello, but also of life. He had quite a story. At this same time, I got taken on at Brass and Reed Music on Mason Ave. in Daytona as an apprentice. In 1977 I took over the shop in the back of Streeps Music which was then in the current location of the channel 2 office on US 1. I repaired guitars, Band and Orchestra instruments as well as electric pianos (Rhodes and Wurlitzers). I felt blessed to be in such inter-esting work but was barely hanging on financially. I had a baby daughter and my wife at the time didn’t work. After Reagan gutted the federal funding of school music programs, business took a dive. Streeps closed on 1984 and I balked at going into debt to open my own store. At any rate, I was getting tired of working inside a shop every day.
I stumbled into the Land Surveying business which was at that time enjoying a boom. I had done some sur-veying with my Father and I found I enjoyed the combination of technical challenge and moderate physical activ-ity the job offered. I worked for many firms because you must go where the contracts are and I had many ad-ventures in the swamps and woods of Florida. As an example, I particularly liked the sectional breakdown of the townships around Lady Lake which later became “The Villages”.
I had also tried to return to school as an engineering major. I had divorced my wife, sold my house, and raised my daughter at my mother’s house and started classes at DBCC. Much of the time, I would take on about 8 hours a semester while I worked part time doing drafting or field work. I started taking Junior level courses in UCF in 1990. However, I found I couldn’t sustain the effort needed. Basically, I burned out. What I take most from this experience, is the discovery of science. It is in my opinion, the best way to understand what can be observed. But of course, here I am 65 years old with over 300 hours of college credit and no degree! What was I thinking? I guess, I love knowledge for its own sake. What better way to see beyond what can be observed?
Shaunna and I began being an item in 1985. I loved her and her family since. As I’m sure she would tell you, I kept her waiting way too long. In 1991, we married and I returned to surveying full time and settled down to normal family life. At this point, I could wax philosophical about the joys and trials of being a husband and a stepfather. I consider it my spiritual focus for many years.
Of course, the housing bubble panic and recession, as well as technical developments, deflated the Surveying profession and I began a personal “time in the wilderness”. Being unemployed and having to reinvent yourself is a deeply spiritual trial akin to mourning. I feel now, if not then, that I was prepared for it. I learned a long time ago that you must bring your passion to whatever you are offered to do. I consider myself fortunate. I currently deliver a paper route and work in your church. This church community has been very kind to me, I feel I have found more than just a job. I am particularly indebted to Caroline and Babs who have brought me back to music after so many years. Having a voice for an instrument is a joy I discovered because of them. I am so grateful of what I have and what I am still capable of. God has surely blessed me.

HEALTH MINISTRY
“This church, as the body of Christ, is called to be a community of health and healing in every level and loca-
tion of its common life.” Call to Healing and Wholeness 207th General Assembly
“Healing is the keystone of Jesus Christ’s ministry on earth and a model for our congregation’s demonstration
of the connectedness of body, mind and spirit. The church provides a place where health and healing can be
more the absence of illness: we can be the conduit of God’s love for those in need of physical, emotional or
spiritual repair!”
The purpose of the Health Ministry is to help the congregation care for one another…to help attain, maintain
and /or regain the best possible whole person health – wellness of body, mind, and spirit – that can be expe-
rienced.
Heart disease and stroke are the first and fourth leading causes of death in the United States. Heart disease
is responsible for 1 of every 4 deaths in the country. The good news is that heart disease and stroke can be
prevented and now is a great time to refresh your memory on the small but important actions you can take.

Daily Walk Bible Reading
Start now and read the Bible in a year.
Do you know?? Do you know that the Old Testament points directly toward the New Testament
and the Good News of the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ?
Yes it's very true and you see it unfold as God from the very beginning started laying the tracks down for our salvation as
you read through the Old Testament.
Join us with our Church-Wide Daily Bible Reading; where it all began in Genesis,
"In the beginning God created the heavens and earth." Gen 1:1 Come and read what our LORD does
that all of heaven, earth and all of creation sings with joy and praise to Him.
Free copies of the Daily Walk Bibles are available in the
Church Narthex just for the asking. As you read and study God's word, the Holy Spirit will lead you to a deeper personal relationship with
Jesus Christ. God Bless all of you in your Bible reading journey.
Every word of God is flawless; He is a shield to those who take refuge in him.
