Work/Life Balance

Smooth integration with your new colleagues is a very important element of the Graduate Programme. The Glanbia Sports and Social Club is a fantastic way to get to know your colleagues in more informal settings. The club organises a number of events throughout the year — from the ‘all graduate’ Glanbia tag rugby team to weekend trips to bond with new overseas colleagues — being part of the Glanbia team allows you to explore a range of activities.

Glanbia graduates have skied in the Rockies, rafted down Snake River, Idaho and hiked Yellowstone National Park while working in our US sites. These outings have been a great way to meet new colleagues, make new friends and enjoy new experiences. Glanbia employees also play a central role in our Corporate Social Responsibility initiatives and across the globe we have climbed, cycled, ran, golfed, baked and dieted to raise money for good causes!

Participating in the Glanbia Graduate Programme gives you numerous professional and personal opportunities to gain a broad range of experiences across several different positions, divisions and countries.

Any exciting and meaningful career needs to be matched with opportunities for exploring new personal horizons and spending time with friends and family. The Glanbia Graduate Programme champions a work/life balance that allows participants to optimise their professional and personal development.

Our GraduatesAccounting

Killian Healy Commerce, UCC, 2009; MBS in Human Resource Management, UL, 2011

I joined the Glanbia Graduate Programme in June 2013. My first placement was in the Glanbia Shared Services Centre, Dungarvan, Co. Waterford, where I got an

introduction to the organisation by working on in-house projects for various business units within the Glanbia group.

In September, I moved to Group Treasury in Glanbia’s headquarters in Kilkenny. In this position I am assisting with the preparation of the daily borrowing reports, daily and weekly cash flow reports and the payments process. The work has been challenging and varied and such exposure in different areas allows me to work alongside more senior colleagues. This provides an excellent opportunity to gain experience from more experienced professionals within the Group.

The Glanbia Graduate Programme is extremely supportive of completing professional examinations. As part of the Programme, I have chosen to complete the ACCA professional accountancy exams and am currently in the process of sitting these examinations.

Ruth McGuinness Accounting & Finance, DCU, 2010

I am currently in my 3rd year with Glanbia and have been working in Chicago as a Financial Analyst with Optimum Nutrition for the past 18 months. The wealth of experience in preparing management accounts, budgets, forecasts and a variety of other ad-hoc tasks all definitely helped when I was preparing for my FAEs this year!

Working in the US has been a fantastic experience. There’s never a shortage of fun things to do in Chicago, with festivals all summer and skiing in the winter. It’s an excellent opportunity to travel the US that I have taken full advantage of!

Prior to Chicago I worked in our head office in Kilkenny and our Shared Services Centre in Dungarvan. A number of graduates, from varying disciplines, start together and new colleagues are more than willing to help you. This really helps you settle into working life and makes the whole transition less daunting. Managers will take the time to sit with you and give you background and insight into decisions and tasks. There’s a real sense that people are invested in your experience and future.

Glanbia is offering excellent career opportunities on our 2014 Graduate Programme to high performing Accounting and Finance Graduates. This is a fantastic opportunity to train towards becoming an ICAI/ACCA/CIMA qualified accountant. The Programme offers a tremendous opportunity to gain responsibility early in your career, it provides on the job training from day one and offers the prospect to progress within one of Ireland’s most successful indigenous companies.

Our Graduates

Gavin McCarthy Economics and Social Studies, TCD, 2010; MSc Marketing Practice, Smurfit, 2011

I am a Marketing Graduate currently based in Chicago with Optimum Nutrition. My first placement was in the Marketing Department of Glanbia Agribusiness based in Kilkenny where I helped evolve the business’ digital strategy.

From my own experience I believe the Glanbia Graduate Programme is second to none in helping graduates gain the experience and skills needed to succeed in your career. I have had numerous opportunities throughout my placement to present to senior management. This access gives young graduates the opportunity to learn from experienced Executives within the Group.

Glanbia produces complex ingredients, solutions and products through innovation. We are looking for high performance Process, Mechanical and Chemical Engineering students to join our Graduate Programme to further improve and optimise what we do.

Our Programme gives engineers great experience in time, project and budget management. Additional courses such as Lean Six Sigma training, management and professional development courses can be availed of. The range of our offerings and the breath of our brands mean we have high profile and exciting opportunities across the globe.

At Glanbia you will work within a team of highly qualified colleagues who will share their deep technical insights with you while working on challenging projects. You will be given responsibility at an early stage and our Programme is structured to have you rotated through different business units and geographies. Each new position will give you new challenges and responsibilities and offers a steep learning curve for your career development.

Food Science

Tim Hill Food Science, UCD, 2011

Like every final year Food Science student the question I had was “what should I do next?” All I wanted was to go and join the working world! Throughout my time in college Glanbia was always referenced as an example of a successful indigenous, global company. After conducting some research I realised Glanbia was a perfect fit for me.

As a Glanbia graduate I was lucky enough to have worked in Ireland and the US. I worked in the Glanbia Collaboration Centre based in Twin Falls, Idaho, where I was part of the Glanbia Ingredient Technologies team that developed Optisol 3000, an egg substitute that won a prestigious IFT Innovation Award in 2013.

Working with such a talented research and development team was a challenging but ultimately rewarding opportunity and I developed news skills and improved existing ones. The Glanbia Graduate Programme expects participants to step outside their comfort zone and contribute strongly. The personal development ethos is supported by a wide range of training courses offered by Glanbia – management training course and accounting courses are just some of the opportunities provided by the Graduate Programme.

The Glanbia Graduate Programme is not just a job, it’s a tool to allow you develop your career in whatever direction you want. It provides you with the support required when starting out in the professional environment and makes that transition from university to work life very easy.

Mark O’Leary Business Information Systems, UCC, 2012

Starting in Glanbia in August 2012, I really wasn’t sure what to expect but it soon became obvious that a huge number of opportunities exist in a company as diverse and innovative as Glanbia. As a Glanbia graduate you’re part of a team from day one. I was expected to contribute but I was also offered as much training, support and guidance as I could ever have hoped for. Within weeks I was given the opportunity to travel to Copenhagen as part of my training and development plan and a few months later I worked on assignments in both London and Chicago.

Aidan O’Neill Business Information Systems, UCC, 2012

I am currently a Graduate Programmer working mainly with SAP and its proprietary language ABAP. Working as an ABAP Programmer has afforded me the opportunity to learn about the workings of a multitude of different modules in SAP. I work with an experienced developer who is able to tutor and pass his knowledge onto me. As part of the Graduate Programme I can take part in numerous training courses as well as a chance to further my own academic qualifications, such as by taking the ACCA exams. In my first 12 months I have worked on projects in the UK, Germany and India.
