Thereare regular dental surgeries atthe Pennard Medical Centre anda dentist on call for emergencies. The Pharmacy can dispensemost prescriptions.

hygiene. Make sure you washyour hands after going to the looand before eating. Rememberthat food, especially meat, can go off in hot, humid conditions.Firewood is provided if youwant to cook your own food: do not use wood from hedges.Light fires away from tents andalways change camping gasoutside tents, never inside, making sure the gas tap is off.
SECURITYKeep your money with you at all times. This also applies toany medication you cannot bewithout. Only bring what youneed. Take basic precautions:postcode your valuables and be inventive about hiding yourmoney at night: spread itaround. Padlocks on tents are aninvitation. If you are the victimof crime, report it at police HQin the Emergency Services area, where you can ask for a crimerecord for insurance purposes.
PROPERTY LOCK-UPSUse the free 24-hour propertylock-ups. Mark valuables withyour postcode and housenumber. Deposit belongings inthe morning, then pick them uplater. You can also buy cheap loorolls and soap at the lock-ups.
MONEYThe NatWest bank is near thefarmhouse and will cash onecheque per day accompanied bya cheque card and cheque book(with some cheques in it). Thereare 24-hour cash machineshere, accepting all major cards, plus some Link ATMs next tothe Medical Centre near theOther Stage, also open 24 hours.Go with a friend. Bring only thecards you need and keep a noteof the numbers, in case they arelost or stolen. £25 a day shouldbe enough for food and drink.
MEETING PEOPLEArrange to meet friends at theMeeting Point or some quietlocation. If you get lost, leave a message at any of theinformation points or withRadio Avalon 87. 7FM
DISABLED FACILITIESFacilities for wheelchair usersinclude a reserved parking area near the Gate A and adedicated camping area (withfree transport between the two),a viewing platform in the mainarena, and disabled toilets.
LOST CHILDRENRemember what your kids arewearing: it is much easier to
give a description. If you loseyour children, ask for advice at any information point.Lost kids are looked after inthe Children’s Area until 8pm,after which they are taken toWagonshed Welfare, whichprovides experienced child care.
LOST PROPERTYLost property is at theWagonshed. A huge amount of gear is handed in during andafter the festival, so you are notwasting your time. Stolen itemsshould be reported to the policefor insurance purposes. Afterthe festival you can submit areport of a missing item on the website.
LITTERHelp the litter crew keep thefestival litter-free by collectingrubbish around your campsiteand using the appropriate bagsand bins. Free bin bags areprovided at information points.Polystyrene is banned from thesite; paper plates and cups canbe recycled. Don’t burn plastic.Do not throw anything into theRiver Whitelake, nor pee in it orin any hedges or ditches: it canbe hazardous to wildlife. This isa working farm: please respectit and those who live on it.
The first day of the festival witnesses the greatest crowd-pleasers in action. If you’re a crowd, hey, you’ll be pleased.Elsewhere, there’s still plenty to celebrate. A songwriterfavoured by Jack White (Stripes), Brendon Bensonmatches his melodic skills only with his self-deprecation.Meanwhile, Detroit’s Electric Sixare to be found in charge of amean electro-trash version of thedirty guitar formula. Notoriousfor their Danger! High Voltage!single, their latest, Gay Bar, canonly add to their infamy. But now, please stand for those anthems. His majesty David Gray, whosesongs Babylon and This Year’s Lovehave triumphed for him before, lookslikely to do so again. Fatboy Slim andPrimal Scream, meanwhile, play hugetunes for those with their hands, nottheir lighters in the air. Yes, it’s the endof the day and returning headlinersREM are on hand. It looks likeeverything will work out fine.

There are likely to be as many highlights on Saturdayas there are members of The Polyphonic Spree. Some, however, stand out particularly brightly: Interpol andRadio 4 showcasing two sides of NYC: one moody andmelancholy; the other wildly funky. Both are worth visiting. Meanwhile,The Libertines celebrate life thisside of the Atlantic. Eccentric andprofligate, the band exist in theirown borderline criminal world, andare eager for others to join them. The Coral have shared stages withthem and lived to tell the tale. Some bands, though, can’t getarrested. Recently released from prison,60s legend Arthur Lee, here appearingas Love With Arthur Lee shows that’snot always the case. The highlight of theday, if not the weekend, may well beRadiohead. Fresh from the release oftheir Hail To The Thief album, the bandlook to be on their way to anotherlandslide Glastonbury victory.

The countryside’s an idyllic place, but Sunday also singsits fair share of urban hymns. Leading the congregationare the Sugababes, performing their bling-bling hitsfor the first time in the vicinity of a dairy farm. If youwant the voice of the streets, look no further than MikeSkinner and The Streets. Acclaimed for his Original
Pirate Material album, he’s fast becominga geezerly live force to be reckoned with. All right? But there’s plenty to be had forthose seeking something more restful.
You may know Bright Eyes because ofsongwriter Conor Oberst’s relationship
with Winona Ryder, but it’s his countryorchestra’s ballads that will win your heart.
Calexico, though long in the country rockgame, remain fresh as a daisy, their Feast ofWire album mining a rich Tex-Mex seam.
Doves continue the melancholy theme, but it wouldn’t be right for the weekendto end on a sad note. Master of the decksMoby is your mood-elevating headliner,
with selections from his latest album, 18.He remains suitable for all ages.

BARS
A smooth-running festival needsplenty of lubrication. Luckily, you’re never going to be far froma bar, courtesy of Workers BeerCo. If it’s a quick pint you need, aim for the bars near the mainand second stages. But if you’reafter a more leisurely tipple, trythose in the One World, Acousticor Theatre fields. Most barsopen during usual licensinghours (but some open very late).
RAINBOW WARRIOR(Meeting Place)Busy hangout/junction: watchthe world, and its dog, go by.
MANDELA(Pyramid Stage, left)A view of the main stage, andfast service for serious thirsts.
WORKERS CHARTER(Pyramid Stage, right)Two pints of lager and, oh,minimum rights for all workers.
1ST OF MAY(Other Stage, left)Another fast-service bar forsecond-stage audiences.
DREAMTIME(Other Stage, right)To Aborigines, dreamtime is morereal than reality. Check it out here.
THE CROWN(One World field)Live music to relax to (or justrelax in the beer garden).
DISTRICT 6(edge of the One World field)Last chance for a drink beforeyou enter the Green Fields.
RED FLAG(Acoustic field)A real ale bar in harmony withthe acoustics and the people.
TOLPUDDLE(Cinema field)The place for movie fans.
LOWER DEPTHS(Theatre field)An intimate bar to escape themad, mad world out there.
BREAD & ROSES(Butts Green)Right in the heart of the festival, with its own beer garden.
LEFTFIELD(Holts Field)Fairtrade drinks and the bestcup of coffee on site.
CAFE ORAN(opposite Dance Tent)North African-style chill zone.
