The Mid-America Gay & Lesbian Chamber of Commerce (Mid-America GLCC) is an organization that advocates, promotes and facilitates the success of the LGBT business community and their allies through the guiding principles of equality, inclusion, economics and education. The Mid-America GLCC’s purpose is to create, identify and enhance business opportunities for LGBT and LGBT-friendly organizations, thereby fostering a more inclusive and vibrant economy in midwest.
WHo We Are
where we caMe froMIn November of 2010, Dan Nilsen, CEO of Bishop-McCann, gained certification as a gay owned business with the National Gay & Lesbian Chamber of Commerce (NGLCC) at the encouragement of a large client of his company. The NGLCC’s mission resonated with Dan so much that he took on the challenge of starting an affiliate chamber to serve the Kansas City LGBT community and their allies. Dan assembled a board of talented business professionals from a variety of backgrounds, and brought on Michael Lintecum as Executive Director. This passionate group of leaders worked to lay the foundation for what the chamber has become today. On May 31, 2012, the Mid-America GLCC officially kicked-off with a major community celebration. Since then the chamber has experienced rapid growth, and members have come together to connect at monthly networking events, grow their knowledge at the annual Business Equality Conference, gain LGBT certification and collaborate to solve problems through Master Minds sessions and learn valuable leadership skills at the Banes Leadership Series.

certificationThe Supplier Diversity committee works closely with the NGLCC to certify businesses who are 51% or more LGBT owned. The committee works to assist member businesses as they move through the in-depth certification process and have certified 15+ members to date. This certification earns members a place in the NGLCC’s national supplier directory of over 400+ certified businesses making the NGLCC the largest LGBT business development organization in the world. Corporations look to this directory to diversify their supplier base and award contracts to minority businesses. Multiple Mid-America GLCC members have seen this certification pay off in the form of new contracts.

Jackson County has been at the forefront of safeguarding the rights of LGBT citizens. During my tenure as County Prosecutor, we began offering our staff domestic partner benefits. That decision, nearly a decade ago, led to those benefits later being extended to all county employees.
As County Executive, I have fully supported and our Legislature has unanimously approved ordinances prohibiting discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity in employment, housing and public accommodations. One person’s prejudice cannot be permitted to infringe another person’s freedom.
Everyone—all the people—should be free to fully exercise their rights and to pursue any and all economic opportunities. I commend the Mid-America GLCC for assisting their members’ pursuit of success.
