L arge IT outsourcing deals arebackon themarket and thepaceseems to have gathered steam

thisyeardespite theongoingpandem-ic. However, whether this is reasonenough for the sector to rejoice, theanswer is not straightforward as itshould have been in normal time.

According to experts, even thoughspending indigital technologiesby theclients has certainly increased, mostof the large contracts that the serviceproviders have clinched recently areresults of vendor consolidation or theneeds of the clients to go for cost-cut-ting programmes.

In some cases, clients are also seenrealigning their tech strategy bymov-ing works from own captives to third-party service providerswhich ismost-ly benefiting to large companies suchas Infosys, TCS, Wipro or HCLTechnologies. However, the IT budgetper se, has not seen any increase, withthe quantum of spending remainingat the same level as before.

“Yes, largedealsarebackinthemar-ket. It started last year and acceleratedthis year," saidPareekhJain, an ITout-sourcing advisor and founder ofPareekh Consulting. The first thingtherehasbeenanaccelerationininvest-ment indigital technologies clientsareresorting to cost-cutting programmesandmergersandacquisitions(M&As) inenterprises has also necessitated con-solidation of IT functions. "Large cost-cuttingmeasures involveeverythingonthe table, including consolidation ofvendors, companies' own captive cen-tres, locations aswell as service. Itmaymeanwork going to other vendors andinternal teams, including captives willcome to service providers."

In the past 10months, large IndianIT services firmshad signed anumber

ofmajoroutsourcingprojects involvingmillions of dollars.

Infosys, forexample,hassignedsev-eral largecontracts in thepastcoupleofyears, includingonewith theUSinvest-ment firm Vanguard that was peggedaround $1.5 billion. Recently, Daimler, which is estimated to be around $3.2billion, to be executed multiple years.

Similarly, TCS in November hassigned a contract with Deutsche Bankfor $750 million and with Prudentialfor a similar size contract. Earlier thismonth, Bengaluru-based Wipro alsosaid that theyhadclinchedadeal fromGerman wholesale retail firm Metrobecause of which it would get out-sourcing works worth $700 million, with a scope for improvement of thecontract to $1 billion.

This deal would also requireWiproto acquire some 1,300 employees ofMetro across Germany, Romania, andIndiawhowereworkingon for its tech-nologyprojects. “The secondaspectofthe digital transformations contracts(we are seeing today) is that the firmsare often seeking to offload their lega-cy environments and they feel that

their strategic partner is better posi-tioned tomodernise the estates if theycontrol them,” said Peter Bendor-Samuel, founder and chief executiveofficer of Everest Group. “Also, mostmegadeals (also) require thevendors tomakesignificant investments, rangingfrom taking over people, equipment, buying out captives and providing IPand software. These investmentsincrease the sizes and duration of thecontracts andsignificantly complicate

the contracts."The recent awards of large out-

sourcing deals are akin to Londonbusses, said Thomas Reuner, seniorvice-president, IT Services at HFSResearch. "You don't see any for agesand then you see a whole raft of themat once. What this indicates is thatthose deals don't represent a largertrend but need to be assessed withinspecific conditions. Most of theseincluded significant transfer of staff."

The new trend also positions tier-Iand large IT services suppliers betterplaced as compared to smaller ones astheseare theoneswhohavebetterabil-ity to invest back into the business forthesakeofvolume.Besides, mostof thelargeIndianplayershaveseenhugecostsavings in the past couple of quartersowing to the remote working require-ment and ban on travels. “Because ofprofit cushion, they can afford to bemore aggressive on these large dealswithout sacrificing their target marginrange,” said Jain. “That means, whileoverall pie of IT services will not incre-ase, share of few large Indian serviceproviders can increase,” he added.
