“Ballymun Framed” - Global Action Plan - Photo Calendar 2011

The aim of the “Ballymun Framed” Photo Calendar Competition is to raise awareness of environmental issues in Ballymun through the medium of photography, giving young people in Ballymun the opportunity to think about what are the environmental issues in their local area which affect them most and in turn to express this in a creative and exciting way.

To celebrate the 2011 UN International Year of Forests the theme for the 2011 “Ballymun Framed” Photo Calendar Competition was ‘trees and nature’.

The competition had over 250 entries from young people aged under 21 in Ballymun. The photos were judged on three elements, the overall photographic accomplishment, environmental message and originality. Grainne Breen and Nicole Nolan from the IKEA marketing and environmental team kindly donated their time to judge the competition.

The calendar is a snapshot of impressions taken by young people in Ballymun during 2011. It also serves as a reminder of important environmental dates throughout the year and gives helpful green tips every month.

Global Action Plan is an environmental charity that offers practical solutions to everyday environmental problems. The Global Action Plan 2011 Photo Calendar Competition was funded by Ballymun Regeneration Limited (BRL).

Many thanks to all the young people, community groups and schools who entered photos during 2011, congratulations to all the winners and thanks for all the support from BRL, IKEA and all the staff at Global Action Plan.

Green Spring CleanStreak free windowsWhite Vinegar, Water and Newspaper: Mix 2 tablespoons of white vinegar with several litres of wa-ter. Make it easier to use by putting it in a spray bottle. Squirt on, then scrub with newspaper, not paper towels, which cause streaking. Watch your windows gleam with zero effort!

Sparkling tiles Baking Soda and Water: Keep your bathroom surfaces clean and odour-free, by dusting with baking soda, and scrub with a moist sponge or cloth. Watch it sparkle and save heaps on cleaning products!

Clogged up?Baking Soda and Boiling Water (vinegar if needed): Have you a clogged drain? Get rid of it the natural way. Pour 1/2 cup of baking soda into the drain, followed by 2 cups of boiling water. If that doesn’t work add a 1/2 cup of vinegar and cover tightly, allowing the fizzing of the chemical reaction to break up the gunk. Then flush that with one gallon of boiling water. Adding this to your drain occasionally can prevent clogging.

Global Action Plan Ireland

Global Action Plan (GAP) is a different kind of environmental charity. GAP is an environmental not-for-profit organisation, which empowers communities to live more sustainably through its action-based programmes. We currently work in three main areas:

Youth Programme: GAP currently runs a range of environmental youth programmes including; school education programmes, youth environmental competitions, a range of youth environmental events throughout the year and youth environmental clubs for both primary school children and teenagers. All of our programmes have an environmental focus, and encourage young people of all ages to engage with their environment in some way. To date over 3500 young people have participated in our youth programmes.

Gardening Programme: The community gardening programme aims to engage communities in sustainable gardening practices and empower them to take action in their locality improving communal spaces, biodiversity and their environment. The activities of the Gardening Programme include: Household Garden programmes, Community Garden Programme, Gardening Events and Garden Clubs. The programme encourages participants to enhance their own areas, but also to look outside their own gardens and become active citizens in the local areas by planting green spaces.

Community Environmental Programme: GAP´s main adult community programme is the ´Green Living Programme´. With the support of a trained Action Team leader, participants find out about sustainable living in the areas of waste, shopping, energy, transport, biodiversity, healthy living and water. Weekly environmental actions such as “not leaving the TV on stand by” are taken to empower team members to live more sustainably and to create a stronger sense of ownership within their community. In addition, we run Community Action Days, which work on motivating residents to take action on their locality.

GAP’s programmes in Ballymun are funded by BRL.
