UN Headquarters, NYCSummer 2015
As I prepare to welcome you, I am reminded of how much work has gone into the preparation of this very special Youth Assembly at the United Nations. All summer long, a dedicated team led by Jolly Amatya on the program side, Jeanina Casusi, as our communications manager, and Yanyu Li and Victor Izquierdo on the logistics and admin side, has donated service to your community. Their work, and that of our talented, exceptional team of interns and volunteers, will better enable you to discover, learn, network, and utilize what you learn here in your communities – and for everyone’s communities – within the UN’s Post 2015 development agenda. For that, I am grateful and awed by their service in the name of every delegate here.
The program itself will demonstrate ways in which youth leaders can incorporate new strategies for global development alongside the Sustainable Development Goals. Through the Youth Assembly’s collective assortment of global cultures, we will witness cultural exchange enliven and educate our discussions.
As Executive Director of Friendship Ambassadors Foundation for twenty two years, I have witnessed the fact that cultural exchange can definitively raise the consciousness of people and move them to cooperative action on behalf of their weakest brethren. Through our substantial relationship with Microsoft’s YouthSpark program, we have witnessed the further, positive effects of technology, when applied to the world’s most serious development challenges.
I urge you to use these days well, pay attention, remain open, and attentive. Have a good time with this new and mind-expanding information; meet new colleagues - and join the International Youth Council, your alumni organization. And most of all, leave here with the promise to do good things, better, and together. Remember, YA delegates: you are among the very best world-shapers. You can make the world a better place, one community at a time. Go for it!
Welcome from the Co-Chair of the Youth Assembly, Jolly Amatya:
Welcome, everyone, to the 2015 Summer Youth Assembly. It is such a pleasure, and such an inspiration, to see this hall full of so many young leaders and game changers who believe in the UN and its mission of peace. Here’s a secret: I started out as one of you myself, two years ago – a delegate at the UN Youth Assembly. No matter what your passion, I hope that you’ll be empowered, over the next three days, whether by the United Nations, our distinguished speakers, or your wonderful peers all around you, to channel it to make a difference in your own unique way.
