collaborative decision-making, the aim
is to improve sustainability performance,
present a joined up approach to
stakeholders and to make sustainability
a core element of the Heathrow brand.
MANCHESTER METROPOLITAN UNIVERSITY
Through support for a key research
project being carried out at Manchester
Metropolitan University, the Group is
offering its experience and expertise to
help develop low-carbon airport retail
models for the future. The study is
investigating current CO2 emissions and
considering alternatives that will enable
airports to adapt to climate change.
BIRMINGHAM AIRPORT
A pioneering project realised
at Birmingham Airport, won the
Champion of Champions accolade
at the 2012 Green Apple Awards for
Environmental Practice. The unique
model, designed by a member of our
in-house development team, puts our
energy consumption at the heart of
the development and was the result of
the collaboration between ourselves
and Birmingham Airport to make more
effi cient use of shared mechanical
and electrical systems.
The energy impact of the new
2,100sq m store was reduced
by 54%, through use of low energy
lighting and cooling strategies that use
fresh external air.

The Group reports against environmental and social targets on
a wide range of subjects including employment, human rights,
energy use, product sourcing and social responsibility.
Our supply chain department works collaboratively with brand
partners and suppliers to optimise vehicle utilisation, improve
effi ciency and reduce CO2 emissions in our distribution
operations. We work with with brands partnersww to reduce the
amount of excess packaging entering our waste streams and we
strive to recycle as much as possible – in our most developed
supply chain systems we send less than 5% waste to landfi ll. All
stores in the UK are ISO14001 and OHSAS18001 certifi cated
and we’re committed to extending this high standard as far as
possible to the rest of the World Duty Free Group estate.
